Annamalai Swami (4) - Direct Pointers and Teachings for Meditation - Ramana Maharshi - Advaita

A selection of key pointers of Annamalai Swami's taken from the text - 'Final Talks' - edited by David Godman.
Annamalai Swami (1906-1995) was a direct disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi who realized the Self after practicing Self-enquiry for decades. This experience gave him first-hand knowledge of how to perform Self-enquiry successfully, making his advice especially valuable to seekers. His teachings are delivered in plain, direct language.

As always, thank you for your choice of such clear & beautiful teachings, dear Jayasara! 9:30 "How to get rid of this 'I am the body' feeling, and of the maya that is produced by it? It goes when there is the equanimity, or equality, of outlook ... that leaves one unaffected by extreme opposites, such as happiness and unhappiness, pleasure and pain. When this equanimity is attained, the idea 'I am the body' is no longer present, and illusion is transcended." Om Santhi

That type of background music may make it easy to gain blissful states which are great to enjoy occasionally like one enjoys sweets. As the author indicated after the 33 min mark, one can easily get used to bliss / trance and craving for it can be an impediment to progress on the path. May you find what you are looking for without any delays or obstacles.

A trance state generally lacks awareness or mindfulness. Right samadhi means that there is clear knowing, seeing and awareness.

At first there are many thoughts, when the mind gets more settled in Silence there are far less thoughts, happening maybe 2 or 3 times a day a slight faint hint of mind. Finally it gets settled on the Self permanently & it's hard to pin down exactly when that happens but it just happens. Now without any effort, just remain like that throughout daily life. Just deny the mind attention & like a fan that has been cut off from power it will continue around for a bit but then it gets slower until it stops. When you remain like this there's no more person there, it's like coming out of a dense fog & finally being able to see clearly. All these bodies have been moving around by latent mental tendencies, when the mind is no more, everything that happens is unfolding spontaneously by itself, without an actor. Here are some good instructions to supplement A.S's pointers: "Lady Tsogyal asked the master: How should one keep the mind during meditation? The master replied: While meditating, let your body and mind relax. Since there is nothing whatsoever to be analyzed, the stream of dualistic mind and the mental states arising from it are interrupted. You do not have to deliberately halt them. While neither keeping nor rejecting anything, let go of all mental activity. Don't think of anything, and don't imagine anything. Your nature is aware, just as it is. Without moving toward anything, let be in your natural state. When remaining in this way, the knower and the known are not seen as separate, so don't think of the object as being there or the knower as being here. Do not conceive of something other than those two. Since you neither pursue an object there nor try to stop a thought here, you can allow mind itself to be pure, lucid, and awake, without needing to dwell on anything whatsoever". Let there be Peace & Love among all beings of the universe, Aum Shanti Shanti Shanti 😊❤

@DilbagSingh-sp2yp During deep sleep, there is no "you" there who experiences deep sleep. As to your waking hours, yes, it's the same here. Quiet during the day. But I wouldn't call it an experience as such. Who is having the experience of silence? Don't make an experience out of it. That's the mind with a very subtle trick of duality. Experience and experiencer. ❤️🪷
