She made a business decision that was best for her and you can't fault her for that. Staying at the top of your game in any sport requires alot of work and wear and tear. Given a choice, she took the easier and more lucrative route bc she knows her greater asset, her looks not her athleticism, was gonna get her the bag. Even now, 2 decades after her retirement, ppl still know who she is.

Anna's a class act. And she'll always be under-appreciated as an athlete, as a tennis player. She was the ultimate confluence of beauty and talent. She just never ws allowed to let that talent run wild -- in singles, anyways. She was always a fun, energetic, wonderful doubles player. But that pain of not winning a title, that really hurt. But what a woman. There's only ever going to be one Anna.

We like to think of these people as robots that never get hurt, have personal tradgedy or have mental issues and then we are surprised to find out they are human. The problem with being a pro in tennis, golf, track & field or even baseball to a certain extent, is its all on you, 100%. Your teammates can't pick you up, tweaked muscle here or there and your performance drops. Don't forget, Martina Hingis had injuries as well and I didn't realize she made a big comeback in doubles only. I looked at what Anna achieved and I would call her a success story. Try to get to #10 in the world in anything. Congrats to Anna.

What do you mean "a great heart"? She has normal heart. She had been the good tennis player. then , having a choice, she had chosen the career of a model. She had gotten Iglesias, who is, obviously, a narcissist. She obviously loves him. It looks for me, though, that he does not love her and children enough. Otherwise, it would not have been these swinging, like married - not married. From official marriage and parents TRUE devotion to kids depend the attitude and the mental health of growing children. and their mother also. And Enrique should have known it well by his very own upbringing .and pertinent experience..

Amazing video. It made me relive my being a fan of Annas from 1996 to 2003. Of course it upset me that she never won a singles title but Anna made the top 10 and she was the main reason for the explosion of female Russian tennis players. I rooted for a lot of the Russian ladies in tennis and figure skating and other sports because of Anna. I found out recently Anna and and Enrique have 3 children and it blew my mind. Obviously I'm very happy for them. Their 3 children have blonde hair like Anna. The best tennis Anna ever played was in the 1st set of the Lipton final in 1998 against Venus. Later that year at Eastborne she beat Steffi Graf and I thought she was going to win that title for sure. Unortunately during that match Anna tore a ligament in her right thumb and had to pull out of Eastborne and then Wimbledon and she was never the same after that and that's when her serve problems started. Compared to most of a big powerful girls on tour Anna was a light weight and I think she just got worn out by the tour and all the injuries especially those foot fractures. Happy Birthday Anna who is 40 years old today. :)

Women's tennis was so much fun then. Anna's mom was a control freak and she really stunted her Annas growth as a tennis player. And then of course many injuries came in to play and that really crushed Anna. Anna's natural talent mobility and ball striking abilities were top notch. Is that thumb injury she suffered in Eastbourne really changed Anna's career because she was going to win that title and do well at Wimbledon. But that fun injury changed everything.

I remember her career, and there is one thing missing that contributed to her downfall as a singles player. She is absolutely not a failure as a tennis player as No 1. ranked doubles player, and a two-time doubles grand slam champion. The missing factor in this excellent segment is how the audience handled her stunning beauty. She got so much attention for being an absolute knock-out, that it took over. Also, some of the male audience did not treat her respectfully during matches. They shouted very inappropriate things to her. I remember sports analysts discussing whether she was a virgin not once. Since then, she's not the only one, but she was one of the first to really suffer from it. The way I saw it, some men in the audience couldn't control themselves. I think this is a general problem to objectify young female athletes in a sexual way. Kournikova was not ready for that kind of attention. I am pretty sure she would have had even more tennis success if she was average looking, and people would only give her attention for being a very talented athlete. One of her problems was that she was so stunningly good looking.

She was in the Top 10 in the WORLD, at a time when womens' tennis was loaded with outstanding, historic even, talent. The fact that Hingis would have her for a doubles partner is a testament to what a good player she was; that match where she dbl faulted 31 times? Yeah, she WON that match. Anyone who's played tennis knows about days like that with your serve. She had a great career as a tennis player, but she was smart enough to see another route to success, less fickle and chancy than sport. In a way, her breath-taking beauty was going to waste on a tennis court if you ask me.

Anna turned to modelling once it became apparent she had "topped out" in her tennis career. She was slightly built - and her body was prone to injuries probably because of that. Even minor injuries and "niggles" can have a detrimental effect on your momentum up the ranks, and Anna had a bad run. Mark Philippoussis was the same. He was beating Pete Sampras at Wimbledon when his knee went. His knee was a problem from that point on, and he was never the same again.

Anna Kournikova is a good player, she was a top ten player and she was there for a reason. I saw her play in Australia, she was quick... very quick. I think she runs ball down better than Hingis at the time. It is just her game is a high risk game, a hard flat hitting which leave very little margin of error; and her serve was just... not there. And she was also injury prone, It just happened. Should she played some lower level WTA tour, she would definitely win a title. She just didn't. Is a pity but like I said, it just happened. It's just a matter of destiny that is, enough for her at least , won two (2) grand slam titiles. The very notable success for her is her being in a family of three (3).

She gave tennis the shot of her life but it simply wasn't meant to be so she went on another path, modeling, and became a millionaire. Great for her! More so, she won many doubles tournaments and peaked at Number One doing so (I believe she and Hingis developed a good friendship and that's a plus). Many people try a certain field as a career, for many years, then change their focus to something else. It's really that simple. I see nothing sad about her life. I am very happy she and Enrique have been together now for MANY years with a beautiful family. #CongratulationsAnna !!!

So Kournikova turned out to be the smarter one! Chose the easier option of making millions, became the envy of most women, ended up marrying the love of her life who's more than well set and blessed with beautiful kids now. Anna experienced it all and came out Trumps in the end. Fall? What fall?
