she gave out at least as much as she got with an incredibly foul mouth, terrible temper and worse reputation among her co-workers. An unprofessional drug addict. She was liked by very few people in the film industry and loathed by many although her talent was never in doubt.

Ann Miller with her heart-shaped face, toothpaste smile, and her long legged limbs , Ann Miller was the most vigorous tap-dancers of Hollywood's Golden Era. She had a friendly cheerleader like presence on-screen. Even some of her non-dancing roles showed that Annie could play a smart cookie who knew the score. Ann Miller as a true professional talent and her films will live on.

I've said it once, and I must say it again. Ann Miller has no idea what she it talking about. She is embellishing a lot. I've seen 3 interviews with know it all Ann Miller and Ann's stories are made up. The only song that Judy sang with A cane and a straw hat, was the cake walk (I think) from Meet Me In St.Louis 1944, Liza wasn't born yet, she did it with Margaret O'Brien. Easter Parade 1948 was the lst time and only time Judy and Fred ever worked together. I kept wishing Judy would end up with Peter Lawford not Fred....

  • @jonathankieranwriter

    @jonathankieranwriter

    3 жыл бұрын

Debbie Reynolds is right, and she ought to know. The daughter is/was a completely different type of talent than Garland. Minnelli was not really a very good singer at all-nowhere near her mother’s ability-and she was not as natural an actress or dancer as Garland, no matter how much fuss was made about ‘Cabaret’ (Minnelli was good in Cabaret, certainly, but I don’t think the performance holds up as a work of genius, and I always smelled a whiff of “Guilt Oscar” in the Academy’s fever that year-the mother’s death was still quite fresh in the world’s/industry’s conscience.) I think one area where Liza Minnelli could match (and maybe even surpass, a little) her mother, however, was as a comedienne. Minnelli’s comic timing and sensibilities were absolutely brilliant and tragically untapped, overall. Garland was a wit and had lovely, natural comic talent, but Minnelli was MADE for comedy. I think that’s why Minnelli’s film career fizzled: they kept trying to make her into a leading lady when she wasn’t really a broadly approachable, natural actress. Same with her recording career-not anywhere near a popular stylist/singer. But on New York stages and in comedies (as ‘Arthur’ and the bit on ‘Arrested Development’ demonstrated) Minnelli could be a comic genius. If they’d written some great comedies for her-wow, she would have cleaned-up in both film and stage box offices. As it turned out, they threw a lot of awards at Minnelli for often unmemorable works (The Act? The Rink? CRAP!). I think the memory of the mother was always at play, in those situations. Overcompensation, of some sort. But Minnelli was a genius comedienne actress. She should have played less at Studio 54 in her prime and worked harder at developing projects to highlight her comic brilliance. But she chose to pursue being a plucky but pale imitation of her mother. Even so, her comic nature has always found a way to the surface and she is rightly beloved. She’s a nightclub act, and a treasured one.

@@MIKEMINNELLI1 This is true about Liza's dancing vs Judy's. I prefer Judy's singing and her voice. I also prefer her acting, though Liza is very good. Judy was much more of a lead actress - romantic lead or dramatic lead - while Liza is more quirky and more of a character actress. I think Judy was brilliant, a genius. Liza probably is not, though she's nonetheless super talented and a great entertainer.

I really liked this interview with Ann regarding MGM and how Judy's personality was her biggest enemy. She had all the talent in the world but she was convinced that she wasn't attractive. I thought she was pretty even the photos of her without her screen make up. She had a very natural look. Even the subject of how Judy's pill problem started. Back then nobody knew that these pep pills and amphetamines were addicting and would eventually destroy you. Judy's sister Jimmie was interviewed in two books about the whole drug thing. She said if their mother thought they were bad she wouldn't have let Judy or her sisters take them. If you were in show business, they really helped you get moving when you were on a busy schedule. So many performers became addicted and it's still happening, only now it's Heroin, Meth and everything else. If they only had rehab centers back then. No guarantee that it always works. I have 2 cousins in my family that have been battling addiction. They're in rehab for 2 months and then they relapse. Remember Judy for the good things she had in her life.

Angela Lansbury was in "The Harvey Girls" with Judy in the late 1940s and although she tempered her criticism in later years, at the time she was angry and frustrated by Judy's chronic lateness. And I can see her point, because there might be 100 people waiting for her, both performers and crew, and sometimes she just didn't show up at all. Of course that pressure of all those waiting people undoubtedly contributed to her mental traumas and made her even more likely to be late - a vicious circle.

We think many things have change since the turned of the 20th century till now but no. Do research of the things that are happening in the6 entertainment industry including music. What you see in those mediums are perverted and deviant things. The endoctrination and desensitization of the masses is working because things that weren't moral back 60 years ago are view today as having "rights" just to proved my point have you seen the 11 year old transgender boy named Desmond? Drag queens who are convicted of pedophilia is reading books to children in a public library. Satanism is rampant in hollywood.

As I'm observing here...It's very sad to read comments about "oh, Judy's fans are lunatics"! "They kept saying that Judy was a victim" and blah, blah, blah...blergh! She was a victim like it or not! Agree or not, she was and you know why? Cause she was only a kid by the time her mother and the studio got her those pills! Yes, they got her right through it and she was only 14 years old! SHE WAS ONLY 14!!! Everyone who think this is no big deal or think that Judy was no studio and "stage mother" victim has to sit down a little bit and think about what you're doing in this life. I mean, really. I'm serious. What can anyone expect from people with this kind of thinking??? What can we expect from people who thinks a 14 year-old child is no victim and that there's no one to blame in this whole situation??? There's no way for me to feel indifferent with all this! My God, if you have a teenage daughter would you like her taking barbs and anphets? Would you consider this a normal thing to let go with your child? Studio execs and her mother are the ones to put on the blame, yeahhh!!! They are guilty, totally guilty about what happened to her! Everyone with a sensible mind knows it! Plus, L.B Mayer refused to let Judy rest the 8 months she needed to take a proper treatment and try to recover. He gave her only 6 weeks cause his business couldn't stop. That dirty lousy verm. Call me lunatic, call me everything! I don't mind...I really don't mind...as long as I can keep my mind sensible and caring about other people's pain, so...I feel fine, very fine.

Thomas Donohue - you're absolutely right, MGM was investigated by the FBI for having too many drug addict actors. In addition, the execs were a bunch of filthy pedophiles. Shirley Temple didn't have anything nice to say about those guys at MGM, she recounted a bad experience she and her mother had at an interview with them. I feel that her mother sold her to those pigs.

I’ve said this before, that story that Ann Miller told about Judy and Deanna was not true. Judy and Deanna were both under contract to M.G.M. At the same. Judy and Deanna made a movie short together called Every Sunday Afternoon, and M.G.M. Knew they had to release one of them, and the one was Deanna. There just wasn’t enough work for two young teenage girls. And Judy didn’t sing get happy while wearing a straw hat. How about Happy Harvest, while driving a tractor. Ann if you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t talk.

I suspect that Judy would've been a troubled and erratic person even if she'd never performed in her life. That just added stress to an already fragile person. I can see her huddled in the kitchen of a suburban home, worried and unstable, as a complete unknown.

The only movie I remember Judy with a cane and a straw hat was in Meet Me In St.Louis when she did a small dance ( routine ) with Margaret O'Brien. This has to be what MISS KNOW IT ALL was talking about. I don't believe anything Ann Miller said. It really annoys me when a once was entertainer acts like little miss know it all.. Everybody has to get in on the act, so they can remain. Relevant.

Maya, you are the lunatic. Everything you have heard or read in your mind is absolutely correct and if someone say something different we are wrong. A huge number of people who are asked about Judy always tend to embellish their story, it gives them one last chance in the spotlight. Again Ann Miller is acting like she’s Judy’s best friend and knows all. ONCE AGAIN JUDY DID NOT WEAR A STRAW HAT AND CARRY A CANE IN THE NUMBER GET HAPPY. DID YOU CHECK IT OUT? PROBABLY NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE THE TYPE WHO CAN NEVER BE WRONG, EVER.

Josh, I'm continuing. Ann Miller doesn't know what she's talking about. One time she talks about Judy being late, but, because she knows her lines, she makes few mistakes so they finished pretty much on time. Then she says Judy arrives on the set late, tells a coupleof jokes, everyone laughs and all is well. And for the final time, Ann's story about Judy and Deanna is completely wrong. Judy and.Deanna were both under contract with M.G.M. at the same time. And they did a short together called Every Sunday Afternoon. After the short, Mayer was going to cut Judy loose and keep Deanna. But, he got talked out of getting rid of Judy and let Deanna go. That's the real story. And Lorna really didn't know it, I don't think.

A lot of people say that Judy was worked to death, and that really isn't true when you compare her to other players or actors at that time. Mickey Rooney and others were making 5, 6, even 7 movies a year during the 30's and early 40's, while Judy was making only 2 or 3 films per year. It was normal for actors to make an average of 5 or 6 films per year during the height of the studio system. As amazing a talent as Judy was, I just don't think she had the stamina or emotional wherewithal to be in that kind of environment during the studio system.

Ann Miller has no idea what she’s talking about. Straw hat and a cane was NOT Get Happy, not even close. Her story about Judy and Deanna wasn’t even close either. Judy and Deanna were both under contract to M.G.M. at the same time. They made a short together Every Sunday or Every Sunday Afternoon. Mayer decided that one of them had to go, because there wasn’t enough work for two young girls. He wanted to keep Deanna, but, he got talked out of it by those who were firmly on Judy’s side. So Universal signed Deanna and put her in a film called Three Smart Girls. It was an instant hit, and so was Deanna. Mayer wasn’t to happy about what happened, he felt as though he looked like an idiot, so he was determined to show everyone that he made the right decision. Another thing one time she says Judy was always late, but she was so up on her part that she only needed a few takes for her scenes that they didn’t have to stay late. Then she says that Judy would always be late and she would always tell a joke and everyone would laugh, and be fine but, everyone would have to stay late, and they didn’t like that. I had more to say but, I’m at work and I must sign off, bye.

Anna Miller didn't know what she was talking about but you do, right, you were there Ann Miller wasn't. Just because she got a few things incorrect doesn't mean anything. Ann Miller knew Judy way before she got signed to those MGM pedophiles. People like you need to get a life and stop pretending you knew those people better than the people who were actually there! For your FYI, Ann Miller didn't need the attention, she was a star on her own.

Hey Maya. In this case yes. Before you shoot your mouth off maybe YOU should do a little research. Judy and Deanna were both under contract to to M.G.M. At the same time. As I said earlier. So how could Universal sign Deanna while she was under contract to M.G.M. As was Judy at that time. And Again Judy did not wear a straw hat and use a cane in the song GET HAPPY, CHECK IT OUT. And it is very well known that Mayer knew about the Drugs. All he cared about was getting her IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. Every die hard Judy fan knows this stuff. Ann Miller was trying to be relevant.

Universal got wind that Metro was going to release either Deanna or Judy. But, he got talked into changing his mind by

Miss Miller has no idea what in the heck she's talking about. Her story about Judy and Deanna is completely wrong, it's not even close. Her Statement about Mayer not supplying her drugs is completely wrong, he may not have personally hand her the drugs, but, Dr. Feelgood worked for M.G.M.. Judy was well known for her Photographic Memory. Just thought I'd throw that in. And everything I've read about Easter Parade, she was not a problem because of Charles Walters the director, who Judy Seriously dated at one time, and remained good friends with him. A song with a cane? Not Summer Stock. Miss Miller memory was very bad, if you really don't know something, keep your mouth shut.

It's possible there was a party in which both Judy and Deanna sang and we don't know about it. Ann was thinking of Meet Me In St. Louis, the cakewalk number with Margaret O'Brien when both had straw hats and canes, and Liza hadn't been born yet. So she gets her details wrong, but it's understandable. Movie fans read accurate accounts of these things and they stay fresh in our minds; the events Miss Miller spoke of were dredged up from experiences decades ago. I do believe that Louis B. Mayer and his subordinates spent more time and effort getting Judy off drugs than on them. Not because they were so moral, but because there came a time when her addiction was costing the studio profits due to lateness, showing up high, or not showing up at all.

And like it or not, if you don't know, shut-up. Thats how all these lies get started. I don't understand how Ann Miller could possibly speak nice about a man who molested the young girls at MGM, and fed the kids drugs to keep them in front of the camera. Mayer should have fired long before he was. How many other lives did he destroy?

Every reputable biographer wrote that Judy wasn't fired, but in fact, got her wish- to be let out of her contract. It was her idea, and her agent Carleton Alsop arranged it. "My mother loved Louis B. Mayer until the day she died." - Lorna Luft, "Me and My Shadows." "(Louis B. Mayer) couldn't get laid in a whorehouse." - Mayer's friend Lew Wertheimer, quoted in "A CIty of Nets: Hollywood in the 1940s" by Otto Freidrich. Others have attested to his puritan mentality.

+A Krenwinkle Judy said she was fired, I have never heard anything other than she was fired. And Mayer was a molester of the girls on the lot, including Judy, and one day Judy told him to leave her alone and everyone else or else she would blow the whistle. And Ann Miller is making all this crap up. She wants the attention so badly she lying through her teeth. Judy wasn't in Take me out to the ball game. She's making all this crap up as she goes. She just wants to be the center of attention. I don't believe one word she says. People will say anything to get attention. She's disagreeing with Mickey as well about Mayer, he said the studio supplied the pills.

Judy saying she was fired is not proof she was fired. I understand you have never heard otherwise because you have never read a book about Judy, or, most likely, a book about anything. I understand if you are either 12 years old, or an adult who has been sheltered all your life, but people on drugs and/or alcohol, confuse their imagination with reality, and say things that are not true. Judy was known for telling whoppers. Only those unfamiliar with Judy take what she said literally. It is true that Judy was suspended, but she was not fired. She was let out of her contract at her own request. It is true that Ann Miller got some things wrong, as senior citizens are prone to do, relying on faded memory.
