The German soprano took the Main Prize that year, kickstarting a wonderful international career, which has led her to sing at opera houses worldwide, including Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, The Met, Vienna Staatsoper as well as Salzburger Festspiele. Inititally, Anja Harteros would be known to take up Mozartian roles (including the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni). Over the years she has shifted towards heavier roles in 19th century German and Italian operas, with a particular interest in those by Verdi and Wagner. She has been awarded the Meistersinger-Medaille by the Bavarian State Opera honouring her artistic contribution.
