the face you see younger eren make near the end and the fact that you see him kissing a hand right after grisha attacked them is because eren saw all of this happen back in season 3 when he kissed historia's hand and made that face. To help you understand: the attack titan can send its memories from the future to any inheritor. Grisha is seeing Eren’s perspective which is why it’s in third person. When he’s holding the key facing Eren he doesn’t see him. He sees Eren looking at him and knows he’s there. If Zeke hadn’t used the founders powers to go into Grisha’s memories Eren wouldn’t have been able to send those memories.

Eren is the son that Grisha want beyond the wall Zeke is the son that Grisha want inside the wall How ironic it can be... What a sad and good character development for Grisha....
In the chapel, Grisha was seeing the memories of Eren (from Attak Titan power). When Eren was telling Grisha to keep moving foward, he wasn't really there. Grisha, in that moment, was having the memory of Eren telling him to keep moving foward, because that is a memory of Eren (telling Grisha to keep moving foward). When Grisha was hugging Zeke, Zeke wasn't really there. Grisha was having the memory from Eren's point of view, thats how he saw Zeke (just like in the basement, he only saw Zeke, because Eren was looking at Zeke). Back in Season 3, when Eren kissed Historia's hand, he saw his own future, from the memories of Grisha (from eating him).
Many people ask why would Grisha go and give Eren the founding and attack titan power if he saw what Eren is about to do and asked Zeke to stop him. It's possible that because Eren didn't show him if Carla is safe or not so when he found out she is dead his hatred to Marley came back and he just said fck being human. This is why Grisha was so cold when he took eren to the woods and gave him the power without much explanation

Not only this, but not giving the information before made him unable to proccess it, breaking him at the very last end. If he gave this info before, grisha could have his grief period large enough to give up giving the attack titan. But this branch of the tree is actually impossible because Eren would not receive the attack titan and founding. Eren can modify the past but he still needs to physically exist in the real world time (and that's why I think he only went until Eren krueger to manipulate, each one of the heritors would represent a risk to him to cease of exist.

Eren to Isayama : Don't Kill Reiner yet.

I believe that's incorrect. Krueger was simply repeating word-for-word what Grisha said to Eren when injecting him. He was seeing Grisha's memory. In turn Grisha told this to Eren because he'd seen the day Eren needed to transform to save Armin and Mikasa.
With Erens titans powers he can show memories to previous titan weilders. Knowing this, the owl was able to know about armin and mikasa without ever meeting them. Eren used this power to manipulate his father by only showing him certain memories with just enough information to keep him motivated to carry out erens will. Zeke had no chance in changing erens mind, eren knew what was going to happen next.
The owner of the attack titan can't glimpse into the future, but the future owners of the attack titan can send memories back to their past owners, even before they are owning the attack titan. So it was actually all Eren, and this is very much the episode that changes this entire show, starting from episode 1, entirely. Knowing this you'll never see some of Eren's dialogs back then in the same way, as Eren was basically grooming himself to become the big bad evil. Grisha was simply able to see Zeke through Eren's memories, because Eren was standing right behind him and thus seeing Zeke stand before Grisha in those memories. At 7:09 Grisha was looking straight at Eren, because he basically saw himself through Eren's memories when he was holding the key. He did not see actual Eren there, he just got fed that memory of seeing himself through Eren's eyes. This is also why the Owl knew about Mikasa and Armin and likely why he told Grisha to form a family. And none of it would've been possible, if not for Zeke bringing Eren into those memories. Remember when Eren kissed Historia's hand at the end of season 3 and he looked shocked? He basically started to see himself in the future, what he'd become, and what he'd do. From that moment on he changed and became this quiet person. One thing to clarify though. The attack titan does not see the future, but the future of the future attack titan holders, up to the last one, but also only what they want them to see. It's basically one possible path, not all of them. Eren basically leads the past holders to the path that would get him to that point where he is. Eren cannot make use of the founding titan's powers without royal blood, including the brainwashing. That's the whole point why he wants to get in contact with Zeke. And none of the memories were manipulated. They were exactly as they played out, for both Eren & Zeke.
Now this episode... I spent weeks trying to recover my mind from this mindblowing information! This episode was the one who finally made me put AoT in my Top 3 Anime list. I loved your reactions to the whole episode and after discussion! 👌
What's funny. Eren told Mikasa and Armin that they have no destiny, no freedom, they are slaves. Mikasa is a servant by blood, and Armin is a copy of Berthold. At the same time, Eren himself kissed Historia's hand back in season 3, saw the future and rolls along the ski track that he saw. The freest guy in all of Eldia 😏

The whole irony around "freedom" in aot is that there is no freedom in this universe, by definition. The fact that attack titan can see the future points that all events are happening in a fixed timeline. No time travel, no changing the past OR the future, everyone is a slave to the story. All of the events that could happen, have already happened, both in the past and the future

Plus Eren still didn't know how to send memories on command. You can see how surprised he is the moment he learns... when he shows Zeke to his father in the basement. Saying "fight" to the mirror in an earlier episode was him trying to do it. Based on how Grisha seemed to have never got this, it's likely Eren hadn't mastered this yet.
In the scene where Grisha wakes up at his desk and sees Zeke- it's Eren seeing Zeke. Grisha's only seeing Eren's future memories; he only started dreaming about Zeke when Eren looked at the photograph on his desk. Future memories of the past.
I read the manga a few years ago bc it took forever to get to the finale of the “final season”. I remember the ending but forgot what happened between. Seeing this episode and episode 21 when it aired still blew my mind.

Probably people have told you already, but the rewatch value of this show is massive, in case you hadn't consider it. And my little theory: as Frieda, the Founder, didn't know about the Attack Titan's ability, I'm pretty sure that's ability given by Eren during his time in Paths. Like, from the very beginning Eren in Paths, and not the Attack Titan per se, "visited" each Attack Titan inheritor and influenced them with his own mindset so they'll make him to reach this path. Up until Isayama says other way, that's my canon haha. Great video!

Grishas va became my second favourite after eren,he just nailed it in this episode
when grisha said "please, stop eren". you know shits about to happen.
And that ladies and gentlemen is next level storytelling
the first time grisha abandoned the plan to take the founding titan back he did it because he couldn't have what happened to zeke and dina back in marley happen to the family he already had here in paradis, not because he saw what eren did in the future, thats why zeke said he learnt from he's past mistakes... eren only started showing *glimpses* of the future to grisha after he figured from that moment when he looked at zeke behind grisha and grisha could now then see zeke for a split moment, thats why also at the end its proven eren dosent show his dad everything because grisha says "why won't you show me everything"
i remembered the shock when i first saw this, clearly top 3 of craziest plot twist in fiction

That's the thing. Eren can decide what he shows the past owners of the attack titan. He basically grooms them onto this specific path. The attack titan owner cannot see the future as in seeing all the paths they could take, but only this one path that has already been taken. Eren manipulated all the past owners, as well as himself, to follow this exact route. That's why Eren was so shook when he kissed Historia's hand, he saw a glimpse of what he'd become and what he'd do, which is when he became so quiet. It's probably also why he was so angry when Armin called him a slave, because he's basically just following the path that his future self wants him to go.
also the reason why grisha was able to see zeke, is because grisha can see the memories of the next inhitor, & since zeke was along side eren so grisha was able to see zeke throught those memories, it's like grisha was seeing from the future in same time they went to past and they met there, and it has to be done because in that exact moment when eren spoke to his dead changed everything, yes this storyline is the craziest
5:42 I dont like how Mappa animated this moment ) It was one panel in manga as well , but it felt much more important than here for some reason . No one pay attention to this moment( But its important. Its shows, that Eren stopped listen to Zere and wanted to see this memory, because its important to him)
The point you REALLY understand that despite our belief he was corrupted by his rise to power Eren NEVER changed. He was always like this. The OPENING scene in the opening episode wasn't a dream, It was his first glimpse of the future specifically of his mom being eaten. The title of the first episode also gave away the precognition plot but no one noticed 'To You, 2,000 Years in the future'

Just a heads up, Grisha never had his memories erased - he lied about having amnesia, but he was just ignorant about how society within the walls worked. Also Eren wasn't "altering the past" - as Zeke said, the past can't just change. You have to look at the timeline as basically a loop - when time is both instant and infinite, there isn't an identifiable starting point. Grisha said "Our memories led us here" and "the future is already written" - basically Eren manipulating Grisha was something that was always set to happen, because if it hadn't happened, then Eren would've never gotten the Attack and Founding titans, and therefore would've never been able to manipulate Grisha. Everything isn't up in the air, it's technically the same as it always was. Lastly, Zeke didn't choose to show Eren specific memories, Eren says they "wandered for years" in Grisha's memories.
This is obviously a big reveal of how far Eren has gone, but I still find it surprising how seriously some people take it. It just seems like some people forget that back in part 1 of season 3 our characters already rationalized why the Reiss were massacred, even down to the children. Even if it was Grisha's choice, they didn't think of him as villainous. Brutal, but necessary.
how do you guys watch an episode like this and not have the urge to immediately jump to the next 😂
Now you know why Eren as a child wakes up crying every time... he just remembers what he's doing, feels the guilt, and then forgets it again.
Imagine as a kid seeing yourself doing this then you finally meet the moment again.
this episode should be rated 5/7
*That wasn't The Rumbling. It was a representation by the show of both Eren's anger and just the show adding tension to the moment. Also, yes. Eren's been running the show since the beginning. He's both the hero and the villain. This show is essentially a villain origin story. I understand why he does everything he does, but just like many other villains we can understand them too and they're still who they are. Eren's been aware of everything since he kissed Historia's hand and realized that another future Eren's been controlling things since episode one. That's where it gets a bit more complicated, but that's how time travel stuff is.*
eren didn't show to grisha what happen to carla to keep him save. but he shows to grisha zeke to make him feel better, and destroy zeke with the same move.

Not this show. evrerything has happened for a reason. nothing cheap or short of genius writing. Thank you Isayama for creating a masterpiece so enthralling that invites real world discussions about real world problems. nothing in life is as simple as Black & White, we live in shades of Grey. Props to Hiroshi Tsuchida, Grisha's VA for this episode!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Every time any anime/movie that touches on the time paradox element, IMHO fanbase + reviewer likes to over-evaluate on the issue. The thing is the moment Eren inherited the Attack titan from Grisha, the timeline has already been pre-determined. Manipulating the past is essentially not possible because we don't even know if there is an alternative timeline to it , and also at what point did the manipulation occurs ? We don't even know the condition for when Eren will make contact with any royal blood titan in the future or not. To simply put, I would like to think that the timeline that we are seeing right now is the one and only timeline (unless it is being explained later .. wink* ) , knowing the future does not automatically make u able to manipulate the past.
Mentioning Tony Stark made me think about other MCU moments, like in Doctor Strange, the Ancient One said she could never foresee any memory pass the point of her death, and we never saw any memory of a possible inheritor of the Attack Titan after Eren; it's all Grisha's, younger Eren's, Kruger's, but never from someone next to Eren, so. . .
The next episode is what I waited the whole show to see
Pay attention to where Adult Eren is looking and his line of sight whenever Grisha appears to be seeing things that shouldnt be there. First scene where Grisha is asleep and wakes up to see Zeke; Eren is standing over Grisha's shoulder. When Eren leans over to look at the photo of Zeke and Dina is when Grisha starts to think about Zeke, then he wakes up suddenly and sees Zeke. He sees Zeke because in that moment he is seeing Adult Eren's memory of this moment walking through Grisha's memories where Eren can see Zeke. Grisha is seeing this moment from his own perspective AS WELL as Adult Eren's perspective of that same moment simultaneously. In doing so Zeke is appearing in Grisha's view of that event when it originally happened. When Child Eren says why he wants to go outside the wall in Episode 1 Grisha hears him but realizes that his reasoning is the same as his own was when he was a kid. His reason was the same as Young Adult Grisha when he was a Restorationist; he had to keep going otherwise the lives of his fallen comrades would have been lost for nothing. Ever since Episode 2 when Grisha gave Young Eren the Attack Titan, Eren has been getting memories from Grisha. Some of these memories have been Grisha's memories, but some of them have been Adult Eren's memories that Grisha had seen when Zeke and Eren walked through Grisha's memories. By being in Grisha's memories he was able to give memories to his father, who was then able to pass them on to Young Eren. Once Eren touched Historia's hand at the end of Season 3 he was given the rest of Grisha's memories; including all of the memories he had given to Grisha himself years later.
waited for this reaction for far too long hahaa
Eren Bullying his dad into making the entire show happen lol
eren: IT WAS ME ALL ALONG !
I got these and the next couple episodes recorded 😅
To explain how this all works: The Attack Titan cannot see the future, but rather has the ability of it's current inheritors to pass down select memories to past inheritors, hence the "to save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else" line. So eren can't see his own future, but he did see his father's memories, which included the memories future eren gave him. He saw those select memories when he kissed historia's hand. By the end of season 3, he knew his fate. And he spent all that time trying to find a different path. Also, Grisha is able to see Zeke through Eren's eyes, notice how in every shot where Grisha can see Zeke, Eren is behind him, his eyes basically acting as a camera.
I’d like to make clear that Grisha can not see Zeke or Eren, Eren and Zeke are currently in grishas memories and just cataloguing through them. The key is the attack titans ability to transcend time with its memories. Notice how everytime Grisha supposedly “sees” or “interacts” with Zeke, Eren is standing right behind him giving him a full view of himself and Zeke. What’s actually happening is Eren is sending the memories of what Zeke and him are currently seeing back to Grisha at the exact time the memory they are currently viewing takes place in. Practically Grisha is hearing and seeing everything zeke/Eren do from Eren’s POV. Grisha can not actually see them but just knows that that’s where they’d be at that exact time due to seeing Eren’s future memories of his own past memories. So basically everytime Grisha speaks to Zeke or hugs Zeke he’s actually be hugging/talking to thin air in the real world, and only does it because he knows 1 day when Zeke and Eren travel into his memories, Zeke will be standing in that exact spot seeing and hearing everything he says to him.

Also Eren has the choice in what memories to show grisha at what point in time. So at first he only shows him things that could trick him into thinking stealing the founder is best for the world. After that’s already done he starts showing him more, like the rumbling, and what becomes of the world. And the reason he didn’t let grisha see if Carla survived was so that when he did find out he would be so distraught and broken that he’d once again be willing to pass on the Founder to Eren to he can bring hell to the world, now that the family he wanted to “protect” is already gone. Carla is dead and he knows Eren eventually turns into the man to decimate mankind

And the way he’s seeing/hearing/interacting with Eren is he’s seeing all of that from Eren’s point of view. So he saw and heard Eren manipulating him into killing the founder, all from EREN’s POV, which is just crazy. The scene where he’s talking about the cellar from the 1st episode where he looks like he’s looking directly at older eren? He’s not looking at eren, at that exact moment he’s being shown Eren’s memory of being in that exact spot starting right at him. So he sees himself from Eren’s eyes, so he’s staring right at the spot where he knows Eren would be standing
Just friendly for the future (: I believe zekes mentor is pronounced MR (K’ SAVE -ER ) I know it’s weird lol the k is like half silent any way. Lol LOVE YOU GUYS 😎
I can't think of a better plot twist in any story than it was Erin the whole time that started it all.
BUUUUUT would any of this have happened had Zeke not brought Eren along on his trip down memory lane?
that's exactly why eren kruger said ''you need to save mikasa and armin'' because he already saw some of eren's memories, and he said he don't know who's memories is that
i gess i can tell that now,! what Grisha sees, is because Eren is looking at it cause they have the the same titan! thats why Grisha can see Seke cause Eren is looking at Seke. Eren allowed him to see him. crazy shit
too bad I didn't make the premier for this legendary ep
Now you know how Eren Kruger knew Mikasa and Armin's names before them being born.
Grisha's Voice Actor is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The attack titan bends events to its will to suit its design.
Remember Eren Kruger mentioning Mikasa and Armin?
The curse of the rumbling started when a little girl was brutally eating by dogs, all downhile from here.
this episode is very deep
Eren is such a badass
and thats what eren saw when he kissed historia's hand
*That's the thing. People say these are memories, but they aren't. It's time traveling. You can't interact with or change memories. Attack On Titan has several different timelines.*
Zeke a real one
Eren was the one who controlled everything that happened, including the manipulation of his father and Dina
