Anime Series Leads to Raccoon Crisis in Japan | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Japan is battling a surge of destructive raccoons. A popular anime triggered Japan's raccoon problem. "Rascal the Raccoon" gained huge popularity in the 1970s Japan. So, people began importing raccoons to keep them as pets. About 1,500 raccoons were imported every year until the early 2000s. And now, they are wreaking havoc in 44 out of 47 Japanese prefectures. They are destroying crops and infrastructure. Now, Japan calls raccoons "invasive alien creatures". Tokyo has declared war on raccoons with hotlines and traps. But can Japan win this war? After all, raccoons quickly multiply and adapt to different environments. Can Japan fix its raccoon problem? Palki Sharma brings you the report.

Humans are also invasive species harming already established local flora and fauna
We had a raccoon infestation in the northeast US in the early nineties until nature took care of it with a raccoon rabies epidemic that killed over 90% of them, thus putting nature back in balance. Something that we learned back then was that raccoon fecal matter can contain a parasite that is very bad for people.

@ksoh1oe276

@@azul93gt38 by the looks of it, you are a lady who finds raccoons cute, I don’t think I’ll be able to convince you but still I’ll try. 1. Aren’t eskimos Asian?- you just described a huge demographic with just a minority of people. Asia ranges from humid places like Indonesia all the way to cold places like Russia(yes some part of Russia is Asia). Even people very close to each other have adapted differently. Someone from Himachal Pradesh(India) is more adapted to cold than someone in Delhi. A person in Delhi is more adapted to handling pollution than someone from Himachal. 2.Many asians live in Himalaya- someone from Tibet, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu can live in Himalayas, I, from Delhi can’t. And we are both Asians. 3.Darwin’s theory is a joke- yeah I agree, there are loopholes in it. 3. Raccoons are thriving in Japan so they have adapted- This is where I disagree with you the most and would like you to change your opinion. Raccoons are INVASIVE SPECIES to Japan. Just search on the internet what happened when European starlings(birds) native to Europe were introduced to America, they WRECKED THE ECOSYSTEM . Invasive species are harmful because they kill native animals of the place, they plummet resources and if uncontrolled they breed rapidly. There’s a reason why it is suggested not to release fishes like goldfish, guppies into rivers and lakes. You can further look into it on the internet

@sacredflames Red pandas are not native to Japan. They are native to Nepal and China.
Watching Japanese cartoons as a kid, I was of the impression that Raccoons were a native species of Japan. It was only very recently when I realised that they were also found in North America, which made me wonder how these animals got to the distant continent. And now my mind is boggled to know that not only are Raccoons native to NA and not to Japan, they are also an invasive species over there!
The prime example of how to conquer a place with *cuteness*
Raccoons are illegal to have as pets in the Netherlands.
Solution: Introduce an apex predator that loves to eat raccoons. I guess Japan needs to fall in love with the anime Wolf's Rain. Government needs to start promoting this anime lol
Well that's what happens when you import creatures with no native enemy.
Japan is very sensible to ecological disaster since they have no natural predators, they used to have wolves till they drove them to extinction.
It is against the law in many states in the U.S. to have raccoons as pets. And they are as smart as monkeys by the way. Incredibly self-aware.

I think this is also happening in my country but in form of Trees.... So we have this Mahogany trees that are not native in our lands... Without knowing it can disturb other trees and plants surrounding it... And some people not knowledgeable about it.
ironically, the anime ends with his owner letting Rascal go to the forest, because he realizes (you guessed it) that racoons are not pets.
I knew this day would come! POM POKO!
Next Japanese/Anime movie hit: Rise of the Planet of the Raccoons.
We have to understand that the entire ecosystem is in a tipping phase where everything will multiple with 7x times using the 1:7 Theory. The nature is entering into a catastrophic zone but before it happens the ecosystem is preparing itself in the best possible manner. From seedling outburst to raccoon growing population, everything will multiple and then a catastrophic event, neutralizing everything. The time is limited, the only message we wish to convey is preserve the genetic resources now.

Dear Palki Sharma, As managing director, do you review all the presentations that carry your name on KZread? Go through the clips on this report, and truthfully tell me what you see and hear about "invasive species". I see and hear something different and honestly, I was drawn to a "hidden" aspect of this report, besides the wild raccoon in Japan, rodent, snail ... and yes, if the topic is "invasive species" (clips of bustling African (?) community), then perhaps the author and narrator is himself carefully looking in the mirror, and then thinking of whether he has the right (as one in many invasive species) to stand on the soil he currently occupies.
