    +bulbinking Speed Racer, just like with the live action Flinstones is essentially the cartoon in live action format. Therefore if you loved the cartoon, there's no reason for you to hate the movie since it is the same thing. That said, I hated Speed Racer the cartoon, so I hated Speed Racer the movie. I must say though, as anime adaptations go, Speed Racer was the most competent of efforts, and the Wachowski's definitely show their love for the cartoon by recreating it with a colorful look and uncanny casting, especially John Goodman as Pops racer. So it was not the Wachowski's fault the movie sucked, it was the cartoon's fault for sucking in the first place. The cartoon, is also a great thing to watch while high as a kite. The whole production is slap dash, everyone talks way too fast, the plot goes on too long and yet says so little. There are annoying side characters, and the main characters are bare bones wooden. It's a cheap cartoon on top of everything. The source material was bad, and as you know, you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.

    CSDragon As much as I like the old series I can see the criticism. It's not the actors fault for being so bad it's the writing and poor directing. They sound very bland or taking it too seriously. But you can't blame the Wachowskis for trying. They really liked this anime and it shows they tried to make the races exciting and characters like the original. But they run into the same problem they had with the Matrix sequels and Jupiter Ascending. Making the plot more serious and holier than it should be instead of keeping it simple. Speed Racer is no DB evolution, it's certainly better than that. But there is a lot of things that you can't ignore. But I will give the last race as the best looking race in the entire movie and it made me actually feel excited.

Btw, give Pops Racer a red cap with an "M" on the front, it will suit him very well!

    @Michirin9801

    8 жыл бұрын

    Nicolas Gravel I didn't, but well, it's not exactly easy to find said "hidden gems" on the internet... There's so little documentation on PC-98 games in English, and there are a TON of R-18 games that honestly I'd rather avoid, not to mention the scarcity of good action games that don't require knowledge of Japanese to play, as well as dealing with disk image formats that may or may not be compatible with your emulator, and having to convert images from one format to another and hoping that they'll still work and they'll be fully functional... But well, it's SO rewarding to actually find an action game that works, and just happens to be REALLY good, it makes all the hassle SO worth it! To be fair though, there's more and more games in ready-to-go formats (like HDI) popping up on the internet, and even some fan-translated games out there, so it's not all bad, and the more well-known games for the system can be found quite easily!

    You know, I realized something about both the Live Action "Speed Racer", and "Live. Die. Repeat." Their both Adaptations that work, and they use two very different methods to help with adpating their japanese mediums. For Speed Racer: it was a Passion Project that is Faithfully to the source. For "Live. Die. Repeat" or "Edge of Tomorrow": a modified script of the manga "All you Need is Kill!" Why these two Work is Clear, as they not only adapt the source to an effective degree, but make the Transitions from Anime/Manga! The exection of these films showed that the Directors/Staff/Actors had more effort and desire to make these films work. Condensing a narrative is never easy, but they managed to not only condense the elements, but add their own layers to it. (Even though its very Hollywood in Style how the endings are.) Regardless of either Movie's flaws, there is a level of competantcy among the Creators of both films, and I cannot stress how important that is. No matter what anyone says, I still consider these to be the best Anime Adaptations.

    "Speed Racer is the first, real, big budget, Hollywood adaptation of an anime that was made" - Bennett. The first American Anime/Manga adaptation was *The Guyver (1991)*. Even though the film was panned by critics and audiences alike, it garnered enough success for a sequel, *Guyver: Dark Hero (1994)*. Interestingly enough, in the sequel the protagonist was recast with David Hayter, of Metal Gear and X-Men fame. And a possible third film had been pitched and outlined by Hayter, but the rights reverted back to Japan before it could be made. *Dark Hero* has been considered an cult classic by a small group of loyal fans. Glenn Kenny of *Entertainment Weekly* said the film "often plays like an R-rated *Mighty Morphin Power Rangers* installment [...] that's genuinely amusing if you're in the right frame of mind."

Really, the only parts I didn't like were Doug's arguments for hating the movie, but I can't chastise him for having an opinion so to wich his own. Happy anniversary, Sage. ^^

  • @cthulhupthagn5771

    @cthulhupthagn5771

    I could get the painful part. A sizable chunk of the film is 100% CGI, extremely bright colors with a lot of flashing lights, and moving very quickly. I can really see that inducing nausea motion sickness. In fact I have a friend that I'm pretty sure would enjoy the film but probably have the same reaction with the visuals being painful because they are prone to migraines. It can also hurt if you're trying really hard to parse out the details in a scene. If only a few things in the scene or brightly-coloured, it's easier to pick out details. But when everything looks like it came out of a Doctor Seuss book or, well, a Japanese anime from the 60s, CGI can be really tricky on the eye. I would Hazard if they reskin the movie and perhaps tone down some of the flashing and reflective surfaces, maybe muted the colors just a tiny bit, the critic would probably not have that same opinion

    I can't... I'm trying to analyze the criticism so I can learn to help my personal projects... But, when it comes to this film... All I hear is whining about CGI. Are you allergic to it? Because the characters treat the world like it's always been CGI because that's the world they live in. When Nostalgia Critic says it hurts to look at the first race, I'm like... "Are you blind??". Some people treat the CGI like it's bad, while I love the way it looks. In fact, I think it's beautiful, intense and full of energy in a way that real life would NEVER, EVER, be able to replicate or even get close to it. Blistering speed in amazingly creative racing tracks while the atmosphere starts to turn into a canvas and the pilot is the artist. I can't understand it and I don't think I ever will... Whenever I watch this movie, it doesn't make my eyes hurt, it makes me hypnotized and I can't take my eyes off the screen.

    CoolConner 307 Probably the Wachowskis could not film in an actual racing track,(maybe couldn't get permission) that is the only explanation I could give for the BIZARRE racing circuits and generally bizarre CGI backgrounds. The story is..... ok... we don't really watch racing themed movies for the story, we want the racing. And the supporting cast did a great job with what they were given, as good as you can get from a script that is essentially a Saturday afternoon anime from the '90s.

    Speed Racer is one of finest works of visual art in all of recorded history. I've watched and largely agreed with Nostalgia Critic for many years, but I honestly hope he's just playing devil's advocate here and doesn't actually hold these unreasonable and misguided views. SR is visually meant to be the very cartoonish 60's anime with the realism dial turned up, not replaced with modern live action film aesthetics. If you're looking for the latter, go watch a Fast and Furious movie.

  • @CaptainFedora
    @CaptainFedora7 жыл бұрын

    The closest thing we'll get to a Nostalgia Critic review of Speed Racer. A film either loved by viewers or despised by them. I'm more in between. I used to love the movie alot. However, the reason for that is because I was binded by nostalgia from watching the original Speed Racer show on DVD. Now these days, to me the story and such is forgetable, but the racing action is awesome. I miss some of the designs of the vehicles from the old show like Snake Oiler's car, the mammoth car, and especially the GRX. Compared with the original GRX, the movie version is just ugly. Also, I wish that Snake Oiler's team was the Car Acrobatic Team rather than Hydra Cell. Also, yes, they needed to show more of the Mach 5 in action. But overall, it's not too shaby. Not too shaby at all.

    I really enjoy this film, and I don't even consider it a guilty pleasure. Despite the rapid pacing and extreme colors, I had no trouble keeping up with the action, myself. It's like watching a candy-colored videogame in action. Speaking of which, the game based on this is pretty cool too. I even was engaged in the plot and characters surrounding the races. It's clear that the filmakers wanted to make something fun that didn't take itself too seriously. While I can see how Spritle and Chim Chim's inclusion might be an annoyance to some, to me they just solidified the film's sense of fun, and I think the film would feel a bit emptier without them. And yeah, it is kind of annoying that the big race in the middle didn't really amount to anything in terms of the plot, but the race itself was fun enough that I didn't mind too much. And no, Critic. I do not think those face transitions were obnoxious.

  • @chimerschang

    Actually, I take it back. The race in the middle DID amount to something; the heart to heart with Speed and his dad, and the invitation to the grand prix from which Speed was otherwise disqualified. So yeah, nyah all around, Doug.

  • @js16nite

    @js16nite

    +chimerschang I also unapologetically enjoy this movie. It's not a guilty pleasure to me because I don't consider it to be a bad movie. I'll say that it is a niche movie that fits a specific crowd, and no I don't mean the "It's so bad it's good" niche. I liked the visuals, I didn't get lost keeping up with the speed of the movie, and I liked the faces of the commenters being used as scene swipes. I thought it was a clever way to focus on the commenters without actually have to change scenes to them in their commenter boxes. Also, the plot isn't that complicated. Maybe it's because I'm used to anime, but it just wasn't that hard to follow. I will say that Spritle and Chim Chim's scenes could get annoying. Not because of their inclusion, but the jokes revolving around them felt forced, overly childish even for children, and too out of place even for a over the top movie like this. That said they don't have that much screen time in the movie, so that helps keep them from being infuriating.

    I legit love Speed Racer. It's the perfect live action anime adaptation film, it stays as true to the original source material as possible. Even when Cruncher Block, owner of the Mammoth Car in the anime is about to feed Tejo to his piranhas, you can see the car they are in at that moment, is the head of the Mammoth Car, which I find incredible made it into the film. However this movie pays so much fanservice to actual fans of the anime, that I legitimately can't find anything wrong with this film other than the Mach 5 not being a "sanctioned" racing car.
