It hits the way it does because it IS first, with just a complex, haunting, and rich narrative right up front. Memories gets less complex as it keeps going, which is part of why the sequencing works so well. Magnetic Rose wouldn't have the same impact if the shorts were ordered in reverse.

I don't think there's anything weird with wanting a story to have a sad ending. Forcing a happy ending on a story which does not warrant it can easily ruin it, and vice versa.

It's about wanting one that's thematically appropriate - Titanic having a happy ending would just be *wrong* (on both factual and thematic levels), as would The Godfather. Conversely, a sad ending for a Romantic-Comedy would feel wrong.

I like Magnetic Rose, but Cannon Fodder is the artistic masterpiece of the collection in my opinion. The art direction and background design is mind blowing and strange. I love how it was edited to appear as a single continuous shot. I actually think Cannon Fodder has a great story. It does a fantastic job of fleshing out a culture that feels very real, and manages to do so within just 20 minutes. I think it's a solid short film, with an ending that is as disturbing and effective as 1984. Great review by the way. As an animator myself, it's refreshing to hear some one analyze the animation with in such detail.

As a descendant of the receiving end of the horrors of Imperialism, cannon fodder is not just a spectacle of animating achievements. It's also a lesson that we as human beings should learn to avoid history repeating itself. Haven't see the short for a decade maybe longer. However, I can still remember the feeling of sadness when I first watched it.

Magnetic Rose isn't a supernatural story. Very strong magnetic fields absolutely fuck with your brain, causing nausea, irrational fear, and hallucinations. The brain works using electrical impulses, after all. The entire thing could happen in real life in the future. Anybody interested in stuff like that should read a novel called Blind Sight by Peter Watts.

  • @TedShatner10

"Stink Bomb" hasn't got the same sense of tragedy and character depth that "Memories" had, but it has layers of satire on Japanese society, with the overly naive and trusting sallery man unwittingly inflicting disaster, and fears surrounding high level ass covering Japanese organisations that got confirmed with Fukushima, and it also had something to say on its subjectively strained relationship with the United States (former conquerors turned shady allies, with a similar message to South Korea's "The Host"). "Cannon Fodder" had no real story but worked as very imaginative world building, depicting a depressing dystopia through the eyes of a school boy. All three stories rolled together very well and is Japan's answer to Disney's Fantasia.

Not too long ago I saw a music video that had Magnetic Rose synced to a nicely done techno version of the Phantom of the Opera. I had no idea what anime it had been from or how to even find it. I finally got to see it when my husband bought either the collection or one of the Matrix movies and Memories was a bonus with it. I came into it having an idea of the plot but was still blown away nonetheless. It got me so bad that even Sage's review made me cry a little delving deeper into the pathos of the story. This was an educating, fascinating, very sincere review. Thank you Sage.

I'm an ENGLISH MAJOR and have had to read so much at this point that I win bets just by guessing plots, and I DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. It pulled the rug right out from under me and then just sorta bashed me on the head until it finished and I had to grab a beer. Really guys, just watch it.

Goddamn... I used to study animation. I wanted to be an animator for a living. The industry turned out to be too stressful for me (I'm studying to be a writer instead. I'll probably still go into writing for animation or comics though), so I got trained to notice this stuff. When I saw some of this, I thought "How many months of work were in those two seconds?" I've actually seen some of the example videos. Like that one about parallax. The more you know about animation, the more inspiring all of this is, because this must have taken so much effort and creativity that most people would shrug off as unnecessary. Most animators use tricks to try and make animation look beautiful but not take up as much time and effort- especially in TV. And a lot of people default to those tricks rather than try something like this. It's really beautiful to see.

Sage has got to be the most underrated reviewer on channel awesome. He is the only on who I can listen to and enjoy the episodes where he loves the work almost as much as the ones when he's ripping a movie to shreds. I like Nostalgia Critic, but he understands that in order to maintain his audience, he can only really go into works that he hates, or can pretend to hate. I don't think I would like an episode if it talked just about how awesome something is. Sage can destroy a movie, pulling apart a movie in 100 different ways and talk about, at length what's wrong with it. But he can also give the highest praise, so much so that I did pause the review and watch Magnetic Rose, even though I had no plan to (and honestly, shouldn't have done as I have a lot of things to do and shouldn't even be watching this review right now, much less a 40 minute anime on top if it). Truly an excellent reviewer, and an excellent anime.

With AVGN, I completely agree. When i found his videos, he didn't seem all that angry, really He felt like hes actually a laid back guy pretending to be angry (compare to Angry Joe, who is angry through and through). I would much prefer when he just talked about games. As for NC, I might go back into really liking his stuff, but, like you, I'm mostly just tired of it. I also just fit better with Sage's sense of humor. I still think he's underrated.

Of course I'm not exactly objective since I'm into manga and thus somewhat more interested in anime than the average person. Okay here's something AMAZING that has happened since the release of this video. Please upvote so that people see this, but Discotek Media put out a dubbed version of Memories in 2021, well after this review was made, and the character of Heinz is voiced by none other than Marc Swint, a.k.a The Engineer, a.k.a the dude that in story Sage is taking orders from. A great coincidence to be sure that one of Bennett's friends and coworkers would later get to work on this anime's dubbing after he praised it as the greatest anime he has ever seen. For the record, I recognized Marc's voice and did a double take after I paused the review to watch Magnetic Rose since Sage emphasized it so hard.

The animation is gorgeous, the story (written by the late and great Satoshi Kon, so you KNOW you're in for a ride) is beautifully done, and I am just in love with it all. O_o Welp! I paused the review, popped over elsewhere and found a surprisingly good fandub of Magnetic Rose, then I popped back here to finish the video. *SPOILERS* Honestly, the first thing that popped into mind when I watched MR was actually Ghost Ship, but the reveal of the nature of the ship almost happens in reverse. In Ghost Ship, they go to a decrepit derelict ship, with occasional flashes of opulence as the ghosts become more active(The singer's seduction in springs to mind). With Magnetic Rose, on the other hand, the ship appears to be intact in the middle of a huge field of debris, and immediately shown to be opulent, while closer examination pokes holes in the facade, and finally, it's shown to be overrun and decrepit as the ship in Ghost Ship. I have to say, this ship definitely made me cry. Also, while I wasn't expecting them all to survive by any stretch of the imagination, I wasn't expecting the ending I got.

+Rose Erin Horror is, generally, a hard genre to do right in any medium. Fear is so subjective it's hard to make a monster scary to everyone. Most memorable horror stories leave a lot to the imagination or something scary on a deeply human level. The death of a child is almost universally though of as a bad thing and Magnetic Rose handles everything with that very well. Though not a happy ending by any means since Heintz is left floating in space... somehow (wasn't his helmet off, like, four seconds ago?) the fact he decides to accept his daughter's death and move on is actually kind of a nice message. Even if he's now gonna die alone floating in the cold, dark void of space. Yay.

Naterkix past the subjective bits- its also a tendency to go from psycho character focus to campy slasher flick. Nightmare>Friday 13th>Saw, any long series will devolve from really good story with strong villians and heroes to asshole kids getting mindlessly murdered by a villian so obtusely powerful as to no longer feel realistic.

Magnetic Rose was a great story when I first saw it 13 years ago. Unfortunately now as a father to a little girl it is all but unwatchable unless you want to see a big man cry. The idea of losing my daughter in such a way as depicted in the film is gut wrenchingly sad and terrifying.

I never really understood the artistry and skill required to animate, and that 360 degree shot in Cannon Fodder blew me away when put in that perspective. Props, Bennett. EDIT: I watched Magnetic Rose right before your review on it. It is breathtakingly beautiful, especially with that bit with the roses overtaking all the flowers in the vase. I was only able to piece together the rudimentary plot details because there were no subtitles. It is indeed a sci-fi ghost story, minus the ghost.

Magnetic Rose is one of the greatest films I've ever seen, honestly; not just in the realm of anime or animation. It's flawless, at least in my opinion. How beautifully heartbreaking, but it feels justified and, in the end, oddly inspiring. This is art.

The problem with most CG incorporated into traditional animation, it doesn't have the same flaws. 2D has lines that pleases the artist as he draws it even if the accuracy is a bit off, whereas CG is always flawless and doesn't have any adjustment for a pleasant visual line.

  • @KumoriGurasu

    @KumoriGurasu

    8 жыл бұрын

+forfluf "CG is always flawless" Only after manually going in to make sure all of the calculations are correct, the polygons aren't going to break on you, the dynamics have been baked the way you want, and it renders with no trouble whatsoever after extensive praying that your computer won't crash on you for it taking up RAM (which is why external hard drives are _highly_ required for such tasks--though praying for no problems to happen still applies, and things are _always_ going to go wrong at the most inopportune times). Just because it's used with computers doesn't mean CG is as easy as people make it out to be. It's still just as frustrating as traditional animation, even though it may take less time to produce. When it comes to CG and anime, it's the time constraints (with rather low budgets on top of that) that make it come out cheap, next to the obvious toon-cel shading used in attempts to try and make it blend in (while it's been done since, I look to the Iron Giant as a perfect example of this method done well). However, the talent behind it is just as important, if not _the_ most important. A rookie animator just recently hired for that project and given the task to do something with CGI isn't going to have the same animation quality as that from someone with much more experience and has put in hundreds-or-more of hours learning the works.

+revolverswitch Exactly. It's pretty much the company-equivalent of dangling keys in front of your face. I don't care that it looks pretty, the story and characters need to balance it out. That's the second time I ran into that anime. I watched its spin-off (which either wasn't very good, or it's because I haven't watched the original OVA series), then was thinking on watching the original, just haven't gotten around to it. I wonder how it looks for a 2002 anime, I'm curious now. CG in anime has been slowly getting better, but it does depend on the studio. That seems to be Gonzo's signature style to incorporate 2D with 3D, but I found recently that Bones appears to do 3D very well, if Show By Rock!! is anything to go by (although I _was_ told Toei can actually produce good CG if they happened to give a damn for the project--even though their CG wasn't always _that_ bad in most cases). It's become my go-to anime title whenever people complain about CG in anime, even though Appleseed isn't a bad example, either. It's just that unlike with Show By Rock!!, Appleseed uses motion capture (the first Appleseed movie didn't, however), which is what I think most, if not the vast majority, of CG in anime turn out to be, which is why it looks weird.

+revolverswitch I agree. It is distracting when it's like the animators didn't even care to try blending it in, but it's just as bad when they try too hard. I understand marrying 2D with 3D is hard to do, but compromising isn't--although sometimes, there's moments where it wasn't going to work regardless. It's a hard medium to work with, that's understandable, it just still doesn't mean it should be half-assed. Shooooot, I have to remember how it looks, it's been a while since I saw it xD. *-*is too lazy to pop in the DVD*-* Far as I can remember, it didn't bother me. Wasn't like with Ghost in the Shell 2.0 where it was distracting because they didn't go all the way to just reanimate the entire movie in CGI. It was just pointless, honestly.

I remember seeing this when it first came out. I even bought the OST. I always considered Cannon Fodder to be nowhere near as good as the first two parts. However, I never realized until Sage pointed it out, that Cannon Fodder is one continuous shot. Watching it with that in mind makes it a lot more interesting, not to mention impressive..

This is one of your best reviews yet, Sage. I really mean it - the depth you go into explaining the craft and the terminology added a lot to it. And while you didn't bring it up, it made me think back to your review of X, and how it's basically a pretty movie, but with a shitty story, while Magnetic Rose was both visually stunning, as well as having a compelling, well thought out story. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but it was interesting how a comparison could be made by simply bringing up the same points in the positive for Magnetic Rose that were brought up in the negative for X, without even having to bring up X.

*This is my first comment ever on your videos, Bennett and I really have to point it out to any one who stumble on this: this wasn't a simple review ( don't get me wrong: your reviews are the sagest [sic] by comparison with so many others). This was an essay, a love declaration to the Art of Animation. Profound documented- technically as well aesthetically. It was like watching a combination of Attenborough, Sagan and Ebert. I did stop your review at **16:53** and fervently googling for ''Magnetic Rose''. Found it, watched it, mesmerized by it. Good heavens, what an experience! Thank you for sharing it with us. Even without Sage's sagely inducements, merely seeing the title of this video made me watch Memories immediately, I'd been meaning to for a while. Magnetic Rose: pretty damn phenomenal in all respects, I'm not sure I can think of any better space horror outside of say, 2001: A Space Odyssey (not that either is exclusively of that category). Certain scenes have already left a lasting impact on me, like the operatic singing amidst the ship's atmosphere leaking out. I feel like that must tie into Eva's lost voice; singing into a soundless void as if nothing's wrong, it's just a haunting way of showing the depths of her delusions.

I've ben putting off seeing Memories since it first came out. Don't ask me why, it's just something that happens sometimes. I've even owned the soundtrack for years and know it back to front. Something just recently brought it back to my attention and I stopped being an asshole and acquired a copy of it. It's 4:51am, Thursday morning and I just got in from work at the bar and have had it on my mind all night cause this is the moment I've been waiting for. I KNEW you had to have a review of it somewhere in your archives, so to get myself prepared while I smoke a cigarette and get settled it, I pulled up Anime Abandon and was actually a little shocked to find a fairly recent review. The last half-hour, I've been so into your review and discussion on the importance of cinematography, perspective and blocking in animation, I'm completely HYPED to finally pull the trigger and watch what I'm sure will be a memorable anime experience. I'm almost hesitant to get started cause I already don't wanna be finished. Thanks, Sage. You've turned me onto plenty of great (and delightfully BAD) movies & series over the years, not to mention you've always been a fantastic part of the anniversary movies and just general skits and stuff. This time, I already knew about the movie before watching you're video, and it's like you knew that already, so you pointed out elements for me to pay more attention to as I watch it, to further enhance the experience. I feel like we just had a remarkable conversation about the movie I'm about to put on. I was all aggravated and just mentally run down from a stupid night at work and you helped push the "reset" button.

7 and a half years later, I can now finally watch the last half of this review. I watched this review my senior year in college and when I saw there was only a DVD, i got sad for I wanted to see the animation quality at its finest. Years later I remember seeing the 2021 blu ray and getting really excited, but I just didn't buy it. Luckily Amazon Prime had the movie up on their streaming platform and so I just watched it with my parents and my sister. English dub is not bad at all. Magnetic rose still shines

You may touch on this, but I can't hold back. 4:03 It is not a matter (mostly) of the vision of live action filmmakers falling short due to the chaos of reality. More to the point, the culture of film and theatre thrives on improvisation and spontaneity. It is a big part of film culture. SUCH A BIG PART that film makers from the live action realm make stuff like Monster House, Mars needs Moms, Beowolf, Polar express, and other technically animated films restrained to their familiar methods of capturing a moment rather than crafting it. From Rango to Food Fight, live action directors have nowhere near the patience and precision of an animator and prefer to direct a performance rather than create art with time. I have yet to come to a full opinion about directors that come from an animation background attempting live action, save for they have difficulty managing necessary reshoots and seem to lean on fine tweeking and editing rather than actor interaction.........maybe........sort of..............I am not sure on that end since I spent so much more time watching animated films from live action directors than live action from animation directors (because the later group rarely gains enough clout or ambition to make that leap).
