I remember that particular story being adapted in the anime Black Jack 21. (Which was a continuation of the anime that started in 03) Same story with the only real differences being what the kid suffered from and actually being assigned a surgeon with a kind of surgical machine, and while the grandson still dies, this time it was because he wasn't given time to rest. So, mafia hit, son gets shot, this time Black Jack is let out of jail and performs surgery by hand. So basically the ending changed the narrative making it about a heavy reliance on what's convenient or faster vs. doing the job right even if it means to get your hands in there. Personally I think the narrative from the Manga being vague and open to interpretation feels more organic, where as the narrative has him doing it for the sake of being in the right. Still the anime is worth watching at least for the cameos of other Tezuka characters even Tezuka himself as a small clinic Doctor but a reliable medical consultant.

As a diehard fan of Astro Boy and later Black Jack, it kinda sucks to see Tezuka's works in general not really get talked about much in the west; especially in the anime community which I always thought strange. The most I've really heard in regards to Astro Boy is either through the 2009 movie, online power scaling arguments of all things, and that silly ahh boot trend. Doesn't help that I only ever learned of Black Jack through the Astro Boy 1980 crossover episode--which is a shame because of how good all these stories actually are. Tezuka's works deserve a greater online presence and *much* bigger fanbase--in the west, at least

First got into Blackjack from the movie. Although the movie wasn’t that great, I sort of fell in love with the premise of the character. You’re absolutely right that Blackjack deserves a resurgence! Would love to see it told really gritty and grounded in the dirt similar to old pulp fiction novels. Hey KrazyKentReader, what alignment do you think Blackjack would have as a D&D character? You surly are more familiar so I’d love to hear what you think.

My only issue with Black Jack is sometimes his moral code could be wildly inconsistent. Like, there was one story where a father was desperate to save his little girl who had a heart condition, and Black Jack not only turned him down but did so with unusual coldness. He ends up operating on her after all only to preserve his pride after being challenged by another renowned surgeon - who’s horrified to later see the girl cured because that means his prognosis was incorrect. (Literally nobody in this story cares about this child’s life except her father. It’s pretty awful.) 😭 Yet in another story, where desperate parents bring their ill l son to him as a last resort, he initially tells them it’s hopeless, but unlike with the girl, he’s utterly torn up inside about it and goes through genuine existential angst over not being able to save a life. Yet…in a similar situation with that girl, he utterly does not care. The fuck? 😠 I love the series and think it’s brilliant, but that story always left a really bad taste in my mouth. Bizarrely inconsistent characterization in that instance.

@@KRAZYKentReader I found it --- the story is called "From Afar", and it's in Volume 4 of the Vertical English translation. I slightly misremembered the plot specifics (the other surgeon was upset not because his prognosis was incorrect, but because his own attempt at the surgery failed while Black Jack's succeeded), but the point I was making is accurate. It's just odd how Black Jack is openly, inexplicably hostile to this father for no real reason, despite having no similar animosity toward the countless other desperate people who have begged him for help. I mean, he even goes out of his way before the surgery to make sure the father knows that he's NOT doing this out of compassion, it's strictly for his own pride. I mean....😐 If Tezuka had wanted to explore this behavior in itself, he would have written the story to have Black Jack forced to exchange some dialogue with the child herself, but the plot avoids this, even though she's right there in the room, because you can see how awkward that would get. (Pinoko also doesn't appear here --- one can easily imagine her shaming him for his behavior.) Again, it's just very weird and is a very sour note for me as a reader, despite loving the series generally.

@@KRAZYKentReader And LOL --- sorry for getting on a soapbox like that on a video promoting an awesome series (and creator) that doesn't get one hundredth of the love it should. But I've been holding that in for like 15 years and this is the first chance I've ever had to get it off my chest. (Well, I guess TECHNICALLY nothing was stopping me from posting that in, say, an NBA discussion forum, but...😁)
