"aNiMaTiOn Is FoR kIdS" -Oscars

“People think of animation only doing things where people are dancing around and doing a lot of histrionics, but animation is not a genre. And people keep saying, ‘The animation genre.’ It’s not a genre! A Western is a genre! Animation is an art form, and it can do any genre. You know, it can do a detective film, a cowboy film, a horror film, an R-rated film or a kids’ fairy tale. But it doesn’t do one thing. And, next time I hear, ‘What’s it like working in the animation genre?’ I’m going to punch that person!”

R means you have can have a good amount of gore nudity/sex and drug use, Mortal Kombat 2021 and Halloween (2018) are both R rated for their gore, and the original Halloween is because of the sex and nude scenes and maybe profanity but that’s far from the point. NC 17 is basically an excessive amount of all that. X is that but higher, closer to porn than anything. After that there’s just Unrated which basically means it’s in between R and NC 17 if I remember correctly not always though so it probably just means it wasn’t given an age rating at release, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead are both unrated and have light amounts of gore with people being ripped apart mainly. Some other rules make what would normally be a PG 13 movie R, mainly just two or more F Bombs.

Even with animated shows that kids CAN watch, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the only, or even the primary, target demographic. For example, people often describe SpongeBob as a “kids show,” and I imagine that’s the target demographic Nickelodeon executives were going for. However, I think the writers, at least for the first three seasons, were aiming to make a show for all ages-a demographic people often mistake as “for kids.” Meanwhile, people with this mindset won’t watch SpongeBob and miss out on one of the most genuinely funny comedies of all time just because it’s drawn instead of live-acted.

@@silverraven250 I'd kinda agree with you as far as season one but the mature themes really take off after that. AoT is a lot more than violence and reducing one's perception of it to that kinda just proves the narrative right regarding a very particular accusation it made to its audience toward the end of season 3. It's a mass-appeal show that's better at targeting younger audiences than traditionally "adult" media in the west, largely because of inherent elements of its medium.

Some aren't directly portrayed by the characters and the show while other animations do. the whole stigma against animation is silly and honestly I think it's actually childish to think that just because a certain medium isn't live action, that it's somehow for kids. Also the fact they tend to not realize that live action movies filled with cgi are basically half animated at best. Honestly, trying super hard to seem adult in general is super childish and it seems a lot of people never grew out of that phase. Actually there's just a lot of stupid thoughts about media like how extreme gore is seen as less mentally scarring to children than seeing a singular bare tit or the idea that gore, sex and drugs are what make something adult more than stuff like nuanced sides, existential themes and so on.

About 12% of all the nominated films are adult. Most of the remaining 88% appeal to both kids AND adults. Treat the medium with some respect.

“G” is for everyone. Not kids only. Sometimes even films for kids have things adults could enjoy, or contain stuff honestly not entirely suited for children. The Breadwinner by Cartoon Saloon comes into mind (or anything they make, really). It tackles an existing issue, and even contains non-cartoon violence/blood. Animation is a medium, not a genre.

Emile Reynaud, 1888: creates through the praxinoscope a theater that projects full motion coloured pictures of stories accompanied with music (he created the modern cinema almost ten years before the Lumiere brothers created the cinemascope) Relegated as a proto animator. Vladsilav Starevich, 1911: releases the first short made fully in stop motion, he used bugs (and i mean HE WIRED REAL LIFE BEETLES AND GRASS HOPPERS) to tell a story of infidelity and broken dreams (the father of stop motion) Lotte Reiniger, 1926: after a carreer dedicated to shadow puppets (because who would it thought to allow a woman to direct "real films") she releases The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the first fully animated, coloured, hour long film in history. Is literally an adaptation of A thousand and One Nights including all the adult themes. Walt Disney, 1928: releases Steam Boat Willie, the first fully voiced short. Later in 1937 will Release Snow White, the first full colour voiced full lenght film in the medium (that is also fully drawn, you can animate with more than just a pencil). Hugh Harman, 1939: releases Peace on Earth, a tale of how humanity extinguished itself after a great war (including a shot of how the last two remaining humans in the face of the earth killed each other), he went down in history as the guy who made those animated instructions shorts for the US Army. Animation was never intended as a medium exclusively for kids, all this examples were made for all ages and had full releases around the world. Kids may be the most profeting market for the medium but that doesn't make it inferior to the rest of the cinematic art, especially when it was directly responsible for its creation or help broke its limits. ANIMATION. IS. CINEMA.
