As an animation teacher, I try to fight back the idea that animation is tedious or boring. I call it "zen". It is a meditative practice.

I just wanna clarify: we're talking about making the animation process something entertaining/enjoyable to watch. For example, I put out a video about a certain animation process - how do I make it so that you don't fall asleep while watching it. That's the difficulty.
@iinkstain

@@HowardWimshurst Howard that gives me an idea. Just look at how many views people get on "Keyboard ASMR (NO TALKING)". If we can't fight the whole 'falling asleep' problem, then we should capitalise on it. (I'm half joking. Typing this out made me realise that it could probably work if someone wanted to do this.)
Ye animating is boring af. But watching your sht come alive is fkn great

its boring and not fun for people who don't like quiet peaceful moments and prefers highly stimulating things. if you think animating is boring then you definitely cant do things that require hard work like studying.

@@TheLegendA51 tbh i havent met anyone in the animation industry that gets hyped over in-betweening. Its always the keyframes that hint at the end result and the actual end result.
It's difficult to be discipline when it's boring, but remember no one else will do your idea the way you want it to do. On that note, it would be cool to get an interview with an animator who has worked on TED Talks videos or concept artist for video games and movies and see how did they overcome their process and if they could show examples. Imagine an interview with an animator but the interview changes from live action to animation when they try to explain a concept (I know it must be so difficult to do and may require a budget, but I'm throwing ideas) *My Process:* I honestly was struggling with this yesterday with rotoscoping, but yes the entertainment is there when you are seeing results or it's finished. I try to use audiobook while I work if the process is mundane If i have to think how to solve a frame I need silence until it's resolved if i get tired I try to take a 20 min. nap; if that doesn't work i do something else away from my laptop.

@@antares3030 It can go both ways...I've seen a process of animation without the quick editing and I kinda dooze off and even myself when i try to animate I start to yawn after awhile. It's a constant struggle but i would love to know how did animators back in the day got over the boring phase... I don't get motivated by money I'm motivated to see the end result but even willpower can get you so far.

Different things work for different people. You should find what that is instead of looking for others' methods.
I just wanna clarify: we're talking about making the animation process something ENTERTAINING TO WATCH. Of course animation is extremely entertaining and satisfying when you are in the driver's seat - but showing other people the animation process without them checking out after a minute is a special kinda problem, when we wanna create engaging videos about animation. It seems from the comments that at least 1/2 people watching have misunderstood what he's talking about. I feel there's exciting and boring parts in any animation journey. I struggle when I get stuck in drawing or colouring certain parts. Making the production process entertaining/interesting maybe requires some more lateral thinking. Discuss creative decisions in a film, show what not to do, planning/mindset, collaborations, talk about people. Combine something seemingly unrelated to animation. I have experience in doing both university level math and 2D animation maybe that'll work.
LOL My heart dropped when I saw this video honestly. Did not expect it. I am still around, Just hibernating! Thank you for this Howard, you brought back the spark in me. you are the best!

Hey man, glad you're still hanging in there!
I can relate to this, absolutely. When animation streaming for 3 hours it sometimes feels like little progress was made, but compile that over time and you start to see it. I hope Cozie and others out there doing the same persevere and keep going!
I love the fact you gave him exposition at the same time you gave many people your process for free. Your approach is damn inspiring and building a community with other artists is a banger! Im more on the fan part, so I took from this video that I should comment more on smaller channels

Thank you SO much for making your videos. I'm learning so much from them! I think the "key" to make animation entertaining is to make something you're passionate about, because if you love it, then that will come through and the viewer will also love it! IDK if that's cliche but that is my opinion as a beginner!

yep!! pretty much my struggle at the moment. i know you’re a 2D specialist but FunkE is probably my favourite 3D animator who creates incredible, SUPER multilayered content.

I struggled to decide if I want to do 3D animation or 3D modeling/sculpting so I did the only reasonable thing, I chose both
I can relate to this. I did 4 short animated movies in a year and they're not up 5 mins long. I always feel like am just wasting my time but can't stop bringing up ideas and working on them.
As an animator I relate a lot. I think his video is super funny 😂
How to make Animation entertaining: 1)its already entertaining, Reason it looks boring because Your are surrounded by stuff which gives more entertainment(unhealthy dopamine),like social media,Games, reels etc 2)Those things are useless entertainment,so delete them all block them all ,cut them all . 3)Now in few days you will feel the real joy and entertainment of making animations, because you are no More distracted. you will be enjoying the animation more than those distractions, because that's what you love to do

True, but the dude was ranting that he can't make "content" for social media because of how boring animation is to the potential watcher.
Till this day I haven't seen any yt channels who breakdown and 2D animation like you do.
you know you can actually tell If a person's really interested in animation or not by just looking at their style. for me I genuinely don't think animation is boring It's actually pretty fascinating when you get that solid natural feel when you're working on each frame and movement. for those who are struggling with enjoying animation, find a strong purpose to why you're animating and let that carry you as you go through the process as an animator.

He sure makes his process entertaining with his words, I am sure people will watch it.
I'm not yet an animator and I think this stuff is amazing 👏
Cool video good points very true :)
I don’t know if you have already or if maybe you’re interested, but could you make a video on the animation of Arcane or Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?
I mean I have to agree it gets boring sometimes. As a animator who's trying to create my own series right now, there are times where i"m in the zone, and then there are times where i just want to destroy my computer because of how tedious it all it all is lol. I guess the only solution is to keep reminding yourself why you are doing it and how happy you will be when the end product is finished.
There are 10 billion people and Disney thinks that they cant make money with cartoons so we have the 99th remake in a representational art style that stars CGI abominations turning beloved characters into man made horrors beyond my comprehension.
