The KEY to the 'pencil dance' is how he's holding his pencil. It forces you to draw from the shoulder.

love this, thank you - always struggled with too much wrist action when drawing accurately
This channel is a gold mine of artistic content
i love how live his drawings remain throughout the process. its like hes sculpting the piece. he doesn't go into it with the final but he is finding the final as he goes. very insightful!

I actually never considered doing the colors while your in the middle of laying down some detail with a pencil, I kinda want to try that and see how well it works for me.
Meeting amazing artists and watching their beautiful art is always feel great
"Just throw it away" That's totally me

Me too
Sometimes I wonder if I should change my pencil grip from the standard to that paintbrush style that you see a lot of professional artists do. I worry it'd be like teaching myself draw all over again.

It's good for gesture and larger drawing, but you don't really need it if your drawing small or on digital.

It’s not an either or thing, you can use each grip for different purposes. Oil painters grip brushes in several different ways depending on the intended effect, for example. You can get used to the overhand grip very quickly if you draw a lot.
I'd love to see more of David's animal work on this channel.
This video is pure gold!!, dayum !, thanks prokoo!!, Davids Doodles is awesome!!!

I like to use great reference materials , plus actually seeing the subject , in my mind. i shrink down and walk around the tree , bird or plant and draw what i see
Quote 1: Drawing is a lot more thinking than actual drawing. Quote 2: I guess the only lucky thing I had is that I found something I like doing. Quote 3: ... but it was not an easy path at all. 👍👍👍👍
Kley is one of my favorites too
ASTRONAUT TIGER!!! amazing
I loved it when he said "MUCCA" not even attempted to say the name of Mucha correctly, I was surprised and it was funny!
12 days is the best
Wat u love on that tiger arm I love too n that is frazetta..!
Glad to know that I'm not the only one who can draw but also has childlike handwriting
Loved the video, learned a lot. (did you add the music or was it at the convention?)
In the minute 6:40, he said the key to be a better artist: Copy from real life, know your stuff, before making it from memory, before making a cartoon version of it.

If you don't get the foundations down, then you will always struggle and be walking uphill. All these straight to digital, straight to Anime "artists" today, the younger generations, they are at a loss as Art has pretty much been taken out of secondary education entirely in the UK. Damn shame!
I wish I could do art all day but Im always either working or sleeping. It's really difficult to try and improve because when I get home I'm so tired and dizzy I can't focus on it.
Is this going to be a class (fingers & toes crossed!)?
Those lines, OOOF
I feel you on that scatterbrain situation lol.
Muito bom very good
Wow super
What type of paper is he working on? Always on the search for the perfect paper to draw and sketch on.

@SteliMan I mean, I draw a lot, animals specifically, for atleast 8 or 9 years, and I have a looong way to go if I'm going to ever draw like that.

Drawing is both talent and skill, but the real challenge is whether you enjoy drawing enough to put in all the time to gain that skill. People who are talented or get into drawing early may enjoy it more, thus making it easier to make progress. The thing is, even if you are really good at drawing, there will always be things you won't be good at (need to improve on). For example, you may be really good at drawing characters, but bad at backgrounds/environments (this example is pretty common), or maybe your linework is amazing, but you don't know how to make the colors look good. Mostly the people that want to draw regardless of the result they achieve are the ones that can go really far. Or the people that don't care if they lose their works, because they find joy in making new ones.

"That's not a graphite pencil, is it?" Is there such a thing as a graphite colored pencil?
