Ani DiFranco - Shy

Музыка

lyrics:
the heat is so great
it plays tricks with the eye
it turns the road to water
and then from water to sky
and there's a crack in the concrete floor
and it starts at the sink
there's a bathroom in a gas station
and i've locked myself in it to think
and back in the city
the sun bakes the trash on the curb
the men are pissing in doorways
and the rats are running in herds
i've got a dream with your face in it
that scares me awake
i put too much on my table
and now i got too much at stake
and i might let you off easy
yeah i might lead you on
i might wait for you to look for me
and then i might be gone
where i come from and where i'm going
and i'm lost in between
i might go up to that phone booth
and leave a veiled invitation on you machine
and you'll stop me, won't you
if you've heard this one before
the one where i surprise you
by showing up at your front door
saying 'let's not ask what's next,
or how, or why'
i am leaving in the morning
so let's not be shy
the door opens, the room winces
the housekeeper comes in without a warning
i squint at the muscular motel light
and say, hey good morning
as she jumps, her keys jingle
and she leaves as quickly as she came in
i roll over and taste the pillow with my grin
the sheets are twisted and damp
and the heat is so great
and i swear i can feel the mattress
sinking underneath your weight
oh sleep is like a fever
and i'm glad when it ends
and the road flows like a river
and pulls me around every bend
and you'll stop me, won't you...
the heat is so great
it plays tricks with the eye
it turns road to water
and water to sky
and there's a crack in the concrete floor
and it starts at the sink
there's a bathroom in a gas station
and i've locked myself
in it to think
and you'll stop me, won't you...

Len Enders’s “90’s Grunge Party” video brought me here (you can hear this song in the background for a good chunk of the beginning of the video). Instant fan!!!

My husband came home with this album the week it was released. My brother told him you've got to hear this. We were both blown away. She's an incredible talent. I've seen her in concert 3 times, and just love the sound. I have always found her beautiful. It's a funny thing how we can perceive ourselves sometimes. The problem no doubt is in that we often hear others offer veiled, and phony compliments. It's hard to discern truth.

I don't think the album's title and the title-track are literally saying she's not a pretty girl. It's a figure of speech. It means she can't be reduced to traits of herself, and should be taken seriously as a psychologically complex, multi-faceted human being just like anyone else.

Actually she has struggled for years over her self loathing and it comes up again and again in her songs. She wrote the song Parent/Infant after realizing she was projecting the hatred of her own features onto her daughter, after being horrified that she might have the same nose as herself.

This is just a damn good song. I’m a very hetero male who couldn’t give a shit less about the “female empowerment” bulllshit that Ani’s been boxed into (she has expressed her own frustration at this), and I have loved this song for 25 years. I heard it on an Alt radio station in Minneapolis back in 95’ and I went right to a record store and bought the album. Ani is an incredible talent, and it’s too bad that the media and many of her hardcore fans lumped her into the 90’s “Lilith Fair” category, because it limited her exposure to a broader audience. Glad I found her tho.
