Ani DiFranco - Baby Roe (Official Audio)

Музыка

"Baby Roe" out now on Righteous Babe Records. Listen here: righteousbabe.ffm.to/baby-roe
Lyrics:
i think we might be wrong about all of it
in fact, it’s been proven
keeps coming down to this shitty little interface
that we’re usin
the very edges of our knowing
is just the tiny tip that’s showing
but we’re so wigged out
yeah, we’re so devout
to this waking dream
what’s playing on the screen
and you just never know
do you, baby roe?
it’s all absurd
but even you maintain
timing is everything
when you’re steppin
off a curb
and if you think this life
is your only life
you’re a fool
no, spirit can’t be stopped
no matter who gives birth to who
no, spirit won’t be stopped
no matter who gives birth to who
the path of least suffering
leaves the best trail
the path of least suffering
it don’t matter which side of the veil
it don’t matter which side of the veil
i think we might be wrong about all of it

@@thetessaverse 31 years ago, early 1993, I saw a woman get out of her car in the parking lot at my college with a guitar and look around as if trying to figure out where to go. So I veered over to help out and directed her to where the social committee offices were and went on my way. A few hours later I was banging my head against a brick wall with a project I was working on, and decided I needed to step away for a bit to clear my head. So on the spur of the moment I decided to go check out the coffeehouse show that night. I ended up taking out $60 of my rent money at intermission to buy the four CDs available at the time, and I've been a fan since.

I don't like the sentiment of the lyrics... "If you think this life is your only life, you're a fool..." It's an odd sentiment coming from an avowed atheist. Does Ani believe in reincarnation these days? She is certainly allowed to believe anything she wants, but one of the reasons that "choice" is so important is that we need to control our lives. This is the only one we've got. I also don't like the actual musicality of the song. I love Ani and if she produces an entire album, I'll always be interested to hear what she has to say.

One can believe that there's a sort of energy and consciousness that surrounds everything and everyone. I have heard Ani Difranco talk about this before especially in the vein of the wisdom of mother Earth. I think she's saying spirit and energy carries on. Not that she believes in a particular organized religion. She has talked about consciousness and conscience and gentle parenting as a way to be wholly in the moment with the person you love and not totally distracted. She has talked about mindfulness in that same way. I think that has more to do with a philosophy than any organized religion. I grew up personally as a Baptist Christian but slowly grew out of that. I am 50 years old now and have been into Ani Difranco since my early teens. She was a vital important part of my growth and change. But to be honest extreme or militant atheism never really settled well with me. I think one can be open minded to the mystery of not knowing what happens when we die. I consider myself more of a pagan now. That really vibes with me more because it's a focus on old ancient matriarchal spiritual practices. Many of which were stolen by the patriarchal Christian church. That community and the being in touch with the earth and the cycles of different seasons is important to me. I live in Vermont and it's sooo beautiful here and there's nature everywhere. And I love to garden and grow flowers and vegetables and fresh herbs. When I moved to another state my roommate and I had some really fucked up experiences with an evil spirit attached to us. Nothing I did worked to get rid of it. When I moved back here when I was pregnant I eventually went to see a native indigenous Shaman lady and that was extremely powerful and there was definitely something going on there. And she was finally able to help get rid of it and told me all about who it was and why it was here. She told me all about my Irish Celtic heritage and described what I was going through and my struggles soo explicitly it's crazy. And neither my roommate nor I have experienced it since then. My sister also took me to see this lady from the Barbara Brennan school of light and that was powerful. She didn't even really touch me and I was having all kinds of physical and emotional responses and healing and cleaning out that I could never have explained or predicated. Obviously we are a nation made up of many different beliefs and non beliefs including atheism and everyone has the right to their particular beliefs and if atheism works for you that's awesome and great. My only issue is that I sometimes find people who take it too far are quick to dismiss people like me and my roommate who have had some pretty intense experiences and make us feel like we are crazy or have scitzophrenia. I think in the 90s if someone didn't believe in organized patriarchal religion like especially Christianity your only other option was being an atheist. I think now there's a bunch of people and especially woman getting back to a spiritual tradition like paganism that honors each other and the earth without all the shame and guilt and insanity and evilness of the conservative Christian interpretation of the Bible. I'm also a leftist socialist and support a progressive takeover of the democratic party and vote third party when necessary and support the LGBTQ community and black and indigenous lives matter. There is unfortunately a new age to alt right pipeline that is scary and we have to acknowledge it's existence as members of this community and try to counteract it. There's a woman here like that who's extremely anti trans with a severe personality disorder but she's mostly shunned and not really allowed to participate in our groups because we aren't tolerating hatred and bigotry ..and you can't reason with her and being nice in her case doesn't work. .
