I already found an German reviewarticle with this exact situation. He gave this game a very low rating. I mean everyone can have his own likings, but he never played beyond ending A and complayned for the lackluster story, and i just sat here with my mouth wide open and couldn't understand how this man could make this review without even playing the complete story. (sorry, hope my english is fine - not a native speaker)

No. You can kind of think of NG as a new chapter in the story. Or rather a different point of view of the first one. Then beyond that the story progresses further and a third playable character is available to you. And I haven't even played this yet so I can't even tell you much. But in short the guy didn't even play half the story then moaned about the lack of story.

This game has a metascore of 90%. And it deserves every single percent of it.

gtabro1337 It unfortunately dropped to 88 after one review said he hated the game and quit after Route A since it was taking away time from BoTW and the other negative review is from some site in turkey only that notes that requiring multiple play throughs and having the various camera angles do not belong in a game in 2017

Yea that 5/10 review was botched and should be removed from metacritic, one can only hope for some fair reviews. 7.5 from Game Informer looked like the guy didnt understand anything about the story though, I'm still not sure what he was trying to say in the review video for it either, he seemed not too sure of himself. 7.5 aint bad but this game is definitely a 9.

Just the other day, I was engaged in an epic battle with father servo. I was lv25 and he was twice as higher. It took me nearly an hour to beat him. During the fight, each attack he did was fatal so I had to focus and predict his oncoming attack to dodge it. The music was freaking epic and I was dodging and slicing him so fast that my character 2B was a blur on my screen. It was pretty much the best experience I had in videogame for a long time since I fought Absolute Virtue in FFXI that lasted 8hours. I can't convey how awesome this game is. If you're the type that love fluid combat control along with epic music and challenging fights, Nier Automata is a must get!

I wish this little gem would get a review to increase visibility instead of Breath of the Copyright but oh well, to anyone reading this, please consider this one for your collection, you won't regret it

I honestly didn't like it very much when I played it the first time on Pc. It was weird and confusing because it didn't explain a lot of the things you can do. The problems with the Pc version didn't do it a favor as well. I'm currently playing it on xbox and holy shit. What an awesome game! There is nothing quite like it. Definitely one of the best games I've ever played. There are a few moments when I thoght wtf did I just do and how?! It is kinda weird that there is no information on that in the game but it feels pretty good to find out yourself. Can recommend!!!

I'm really disappointed at Joe for not making a proper review of this game. This was by far the BEST game of 2017, light years ahead of anything else made in this year. And Joe didn't review it. God damn it Joe. This game would get an easy 9/10 (or maybe even a 10/10), with an ultra BADASS SEAL OF APPROVAL.

Alert: this game has amazing gameplay, characters, story and legendary tier music. Proposal: buy it and play it as swiftly as possible.

Really disappointed Joe haven't done a review of this. It's like the most important game in our decade regarding art, philosophy and how gameplay and storytelling (and the actual story itself) ties into that. It's one of those games I can easily imagine Joe not finding 10/10 + badass seal of approoval enough to praise it - after he finished playthrough A, B, C and D, E (protip: just load back the last scene for D and E!)

You're on crack. This game is not a 10. The first playthrough as 2B was pretty boring overall. I started off liking it and intrigued. I've never played a A-RPG type game like this. It'd be a chore to play through any other ending. It's the games job to capture the players attention and this shit didn't do that by the end.

Everyone who defends this game and says it's a masterpiece always say you HAVE to play through the other endings to fully enjoy the game. The first playthrough as 2B started off cool and got boring towards the middle of the game. Why would anyone want to play through another story/ending if they didn't do a good job on the first?

This is potentially my game of the year, the soundtrack, the gameplay and the characters are fucking awesome.

Yeah, you have to play the game at least 3 times to see the full potential and don't get me wrong, all of them are kind of different in gameplay, quest and story narrative so there is a good amount of content to keep you hooked for a while.

I was truly surprised with the 3 diferent playthrough. I was kinda expecting very little changes with minimal dilogue changes. It felt like I was playing a whole sequel. Thank God I found Nier Automata. What an experience.

I agree with the 10/10 easy, I have 140+ hours in the game already, for me it was more addictive than the witcher 3 and OOH man we are talking of the top notch games of the decade.

man, now imagine if Joe played Drakengard, Nier, or Drakengard 3, lol... this is my GOTY contender, yes, I know Zelda's out, but, this game hits hard... way harder narratively than a lot of other games I've played, plus with one of the best soundtracks I've had the pleasure of listening to, arguably better than Austin Wintory's or Darren Korb's soundtracks to Journey and Bastion...

Same here. I was expecting to enjoy the game but I was completely blown away by just how entertaining and complex it was both gameplay and story wise. Considering the number of big budget titles releasing around it Nier Automata is really punching above it's weight, but I think it's still smashing them.

Haha ikr, this game is like a dominatrix with anger issues kicking you in the balls every few story missions. x'D Everytime you come to terms with the current state of things she takes another swing hahaha.

I really rather Joe reviews this game rather than Zelda and see how Joe's view and reaction on these JRPG's types of themes by Yoko Taro under the skin of classic Platinum gameplay. Because the story and themes in this game is rather niche for the western audience and serves as a good contrast to games such as Horizon Zero Dawn which actually shared some similar characteristics, as post (or post-post) apocalyptic setting, a world ruled by machines, etc... and let's be honest, we know what kind of score Joe will give to Zelda anyway, so no one will be surprised, surely it will not be another 7/10 like Jim Fucking Sterling (nice one on you Jim and fuck you Zelda fan boys with your stupid death threats and DDOS attacks).

This game looks fucking AMAZING. Gonna purchase it right now. Yoko Taro + Platinum Games, a perfect combo of story + gameplay. Edit: Nope, it's coming out on PC tomorrow, gonna wait until then :)

Actually, no. Revengeance is capped at 24fps on PC. You need to use an external software to unlock the frame cap. At least I needed to do that.

a-e are actual story f-z are joke endings like if you abandon a mission or decide to kill friendly characters, or use self destruct while on the moon base/ bunker then it will say a few semi sarcastic sentences before fast-forwarding the credits and taking you to the title screen. i advise saving before doing a joke ending since it takes you back to the title screen.

Matthew Lugo Let me start with this.. I'm 38 years old. As I played Zelda I remember just being sucked into its world. Now I know the graphics aren't photo realistic But it doesn't matter because Nintendo didn't want the world to look real, they wanted it to feel real. And boy they did a good job. I remember trying to complete the story but instead getting side tracked cause I noticed something else in the distance. Next thing you know you're hours in and you haven't even got to where you wanted to go in the first place. Botw made me feel like a kid again, I was grinning ear to ear. Wow Nintendo, just wow. A game as special as Zelda BOTW is rare and I haven't seen one in more than 20 years.

Joe, the term you're looking for - for the old space-ship games - is bullet hell shooter, shoot 'em ups, or "shmups." Specifically, a vertical-scrolling shooter. The game you were thinking of was Capcom's 1942 / 19XX series. Thanks for the video - I didn't know this game had a shmup stage!

Easily one of the most underrated games of 2017. If not GOTY, a very close call with some of the other more famous titles. Doing a disservice to yourself to not keep playing. The action and story keep building and building. When it's done, you'll wonder how a game could make you feel something so moving.

The game you're thinking of was called "1943: The Battle of Midway"; released in 1987 by Capcom as an Arcade Game and was later ported to the NES, PC Engine, Xbox, PlayStation 2, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, PlayStation Portable & Xbox One.

You guys should do a full review on this for sure, I recently played through every main story route and its phenomenal. One of the best games I have ever played without a doubt, and the soundtrack is one of my favorite to date.

People watching... PLAY THIS GAME. It will be nothing you have ever experienced in media. Unless you have a massive hatred against "Japanese-styled" games (which this doesn't even have much of, tbh, compared to something like FF), this game will change your view of life itself. Hell, I've only played Western games, and I thought nothing could beat AC2 and a modded Skyrim as my all-time favourite games, but NieR: Automata instantly dethroned those games with little to no effort. That's how good this is. Sure, this game is getting extremely high scores all around, but I still feel like it could be more. Compared to games like Last of Us, BotW, etc. NieR is still rather niche, and it saddens me that people are actually missing this gem due to lack of exposure. If any game deserves a 10/10, it would be this one.

That was an amazing introduction! I want this game now.

Not going to lie, I got a little triggered every time he praised Platinum Games and not Yoko Taro specifically.

True, he made the game all alone. Just himself without any help. He composed the music, played all the instruments, sang all the vocals, designed the characters, modeled the characters, did the art, built the world, wrote the story, coded everything and then he pat himself on the back because he is just that awesome. Just like you. Not.

I just started to play it. 1h in. This game is amazing. She moves so intuitive.

I love seeing new NieR fans just fall headfirst into the different gameplay styles, not expecting them to pop up. Can't wait to get my hands on this game. Can't believe it's even happening, frankly.

So, I just played this game "Finally after almost 3 years putting it off" and omg this game will make you fall in love only to rip your heart out over and over again. This game intentionally gets you attached to it's characters for the sole purpose of crushing your soul. The music, gameplay, swordplay, story, voice acting and protagonists are phenomenal. This game is so unique, it's unlike any game i've ever played. This could win an award for game of the decade and Joe didn't even review it, wtf!

This game might be my favorite game for... the past 3 years? You think your done after you "beat" the game, but that's just the end of the first uh... chapter? You need to play it AT LEAST 3 times to actually "Finish" the story. Fucking amazing game I would 100% recommend you buy it if you're on the fence.

Joe not using jump -> air dash / double jump shenanigans or even lock on abuse with the fire button but Nier is amazingly fun to play

nice! i loved to see joe impression of the beginning of this game. For me Nier Automata is my personal fav game of this year so far. there is a chance that the new persona next month may take over the tittle.

this game is underrated it's the machines that make this game

I usually don't complain to Joe but I think he really dropped the ball by not reviewing this game.

I would totally love to see you do a review of your entire steam library. I honestly wonder after all these years of professional game reviewing, which games you like the best so far.

I think the name of the game(s) you were trying to remember that are similar to the plane-fighting stage, at the beginning, is (are) "1942" and its aptly-named sequel, "1943," from 1980s arcades (and ported to about every console and computer that existed, starting with Colecovision (I think))...

I see comments praising the game which is understandable it looks like a really fun game...then I see comments bashing BotW saying it's a shit game compared to this game. The games are on completely separate platforms, chill. This game is competing with Horizon Zero Dawn, not BotW. Yes, anyone whose played BotW knows the Story is meh, the voice acting is questionable, and the weapon system sucks, but It's an amazing game. I'm not surprised Joe gave it a 9/10, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives in BotW.

Lunar Frost Even when you compare horizon zero Dawn with nier automata, nier automata is still the better game. In my opinion the overall enjoyment with nier automata was drasticly bigger then with other games on the same platform.

Where is that opening song from? I don't think is from the game since I didn't heard it in other gameplays.

Thinking about buying a ps4 pro for automata & horizon ... I have a pc that could run automata though.... is it worth?

If you're are planning to use PC feature then get it for PC. Modders are already looking into game's assets and are modifying/enhancing as we speak. There are aspect ratio and frame syncing modifiers already out. It's great for ultrawide or triple monitors if you have an enthusiast grade PC. Otherwise if you have standard PC then it really doesnt matter which you choose.

I'm not going to watch this for fear of spoilers but just from what I've seen and who I know is involved, its my GOTY.

Whilst I have nothing inherently against Zelda Breath of the Wild, the story was never anything to write home about, it is much better in BotW but I digress. It was always the art direction and game design that made Zelda great. Nier and Drakengard would have a lasting impact on me for its story, setting and music. Zelda on the other hand is just fun to play, about it. Automata however keeps the fun factor of Platinum's greatest titles, whilst putting in the direction of Yoko Taro and Keichi Okabe's wonderful composing. So yeah, I'll be choosing Nier.

As a Drakengard/NieR fan since 2003, I am so happy to see Automata become so popular. The soundtrack for NieR/Automata is amazing af. Nothing else compares.

So hilarious watching Other Joe play Automata. I've already completed the game too many times to count and clocked over 100hrs so i know every boss before they appear. Still takes me back.

I'd honestly rather see Joe review this game over Zelda. We already know its a 9-10/10 and it would be interesting to hear Joe's insight on another Japanese game since his Yakuza review was really good. Zelda technically is a Japanese game, but I mean games which aren't as popular outside Japan, and don't have as much reach as say Zelda/Pokemon.

allflying3 Yes, indeed. This is basically the Youmu Konpaku game Touhou fans could only have dreamed of. If only you could dress 2B in green and white... with her two-katana default set, she's literally dark Youmu. However, it's not much of a danmaku game when you can cut through all the bullets (because Nier mechanics). The hacking mechanic is it's own thing, though. It's almost like Metal Gear Rising meets Undertale in the sense that you make every enemy encounter a potential dodge-a-thon.

Joe please, full review of this game and Persona 5 . I love your style reviewing .That's all I want for Christmas .

Zelda, Nier Automata, Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn, and RE 7. 2017 is kicking ass so far.

It's not the kind of game to play whilst you're giggling with friends though. It's one of those games where you just sit down alone and soak in the dread. Kinda like The Last of Us.

Just FYI, in Zelda you can buy the photos of everything from the guy in the back, in the same place where you upgrade your runes and get the camera :)

Nier is a great game. I hope Joe does more playthroughs of it.

I'd love for you to do a review of this and also to clear at least up to ending C. It's so worth it, this game will haunt you for days.

I didn't find anything wrong with the color palette considering that's Yoko Taro's style. I found more issue with the map. Its funny that even the developer admits in the game that the 3D map is terrible. Basically having an NPC tell 2B: "The other androids don't like the 3D map either. Well that's just the way it is, so you'll have to deal with it." lol

I have a feeling a screwed up ending is in this game. If you're familiar with Drakengard you know what I mean

One of the best games I have ever played. And yes, it is 100% worth the $60.

i played 19 hours after pc version became available and trying to finish the story as 9S, after that is playing as A2, then try to unlock the last 23 endings, im in love with this game

Doesnt fucking matter if the one he is playing is the full version the segment he played is literally the demo and he could'ave just played the demo and we would still get an almost similar video

I wish he would review this. But Joe is more focused on mainstream popular games that will get him views when he reviews them. Oh well at least he played it

What’s great about this game is as soon as it starts to feel repetitive, etc...shit hits the fan and it keeps ramping up in pure awesomeness

20:15 Oh fun fact. There's a monster in this game that's literally Godzilla. It actually is Shin Godzilla from the new Japanese one. His jaw even splits apart when he fires his atomic breath and it's awesome.
