    Very very useful review. Have been wondering whether to sell some stuff to get the planar 85 and/or the 50 1.4. Have used ( and still use for film ) the planar 85/1.4 and the 50 ( 1.7 and 1.4 ) and dist 28/2.8 on contax bodies for 20+ years. I assume that these ZF/ZF.2's are basically the same lens formula ? In C/Y form the planars give really beautiful results - but I haven't had much else to compare them to. Never really took to the Sonnar 135- preferred the old SP adaptall2 70-210 3.5 until I sold it ( don't know why I did ?? ).

    I get that you don't like the Distagon 21mm, but could you please be a little more specific as to *why* you feel that way about it? I ask because I've been contemplating getting one, and other reviewers online (photozone.de, the-digital-picture.com, b&h customer reviews etc.) doesn't exactly share in your disapproval. Hence, I would like the specifics of your experience with it. Great site you have, by the way :) Thank you.

  • @TheGreatLoco

    @TheGreatLoco

    The ZF lenses are AI-S lenses, so no S or P modes (unless you use the FA or maybe the F4, but I'm not sure about the second camera) and no aperture control by camera rocker, only by the aperture ring. ZF.2 are like AI-P lenses that Nikon made a few. Full PASM control, no need to setup non-CPU lens before using and aperture control by camera's rocker. One thing ZF.2 lenses miss is the aperture prong used by some pre mid-70's film cameras. Though, you could glue a dendalion chip to a ZF/AI-S lens which once programmed with the camera, will became a ZF.2/AI-P lens. But I would bother, honestly. Basically, ZF or ZF.2, it's the same thing. But if you want to sell a ZF lens, it may be complicated.

    Want to ask you one question: is Zeiss 25mm F2 (or even F2.8) will be really better then Nikon 24mm F2.8 Ai, if I usually shoot at F5.6 or F8, and use it for black and white photography with my D3s? Nikon cost about 170 USD, Zeiss 25mm F2 cost about 750 USD, Zeiss 25mm F2.8 cost about 450 USD. What you will reccomend? Is it there really big difference between that lenses as we see by prices? Thanks in advance!!!!

    Your question is one year old, but maybe you - or someone else, reading this- finds it helpfull: I think these are uv filters, they have as good as no effect on the image. However, they protect the frontelement! Even when you have insurance on the expensive stuff, its still easier to replace a 10€ filter, than a lens. And there are actually ireplacable lenses, where no insurance in the world can bring them back...

    I have been going back and forth between the Nikkor 20 mm 1.8g and the Zeiss 21 or the Zeiss 18. I know you do not like the Zeiss wide angles as much as the nikkors. Just curious why? I have looked at many photos on flicker and the Zeiss lenses produce stunning images, closer resembling my older nikkors in color rendition and depth, just better. The newer nikkors images look flat and I always thought the colors were not as good as the old nikkors. So why do you like the newer Nikkor wides more than the Zeiss with the fabulous all glass micro contrast. I know the newer nikkors are sharp in the corners but I find it hard to believe the Zeiss would suffer in this area, especially at apertures used for landscapes. The detail from the Zeiss lenses always seems to be just amazing, true to life, not overly saturated. I know the Nikkor offers autofocus, but who cares when one concentrates on a still image, I actually prefer manual focus. I have an old d Nikkor 24 2.8 to carry around, small, compact, sharp enough at f8 or 11 to work around town with, plenty sharp and better colors and contrast than the new ed glass flat images. But for serious photograghs, the Zeiss wide angles seem perfect. What is it you do not find appealing in them?

    Theoria Apophasis I enjoy lots of your videos and have gained insight from them, thanks for all you do and most specifically for your presentation style. I still laugh at the gear sniffing video. Before your videos, I didn't know about and how to identify micro contrast - I earned a degree in photography and it was never covered :( so you're the man for helping me take my understanding of the dark art to a new level! I was turning into one of those stuffy shirt and tie wedding photographers and realized while watching your videos to just be myself when working with clients, I stopped covering up my body art and and decided not to be ashamed of being a gear head, I realized that it doesn't make me any less of an artist to want awesome gear as long as it truly is awesome and it's not just for appearances. Cheers mate thanks for the liberation!

So beautiful, incredible 3D rendering, color rendering and outstanding sharpness even wide open. It’s so versatile too as it is a macro lens with a 50mm focal length (you can get nice compression when shooting close to your subject). You are way way off on that one

    The lenses you have are in a league of their own imo. Amazing character, color rendition. I’ve used the 20mm f1.8g he mentioned and yes it is great but I like the 21mm distagon more. It really depends though. If you prefer sunstars for landscape then the Nikon 20mm. But I love the flare on the zeiss 21mm. It looks way more natural to me.

    @@jharrelphoto They're all leftovers from my Pentax days, the 21mm being a Leitax converted mount. I tested all the lenses including the three Pentax FA Limiteds (31, 43 and 77) and D-FA* 70-200, 15-30 and so on and the Zeiss won hands down, so they remained and all the Pentax gear was sold off. I attach them to an A7RIII (an underwhelming experience, but awesome sensor) via a Rayqual adapter and they shine. Added a Carl Zeiss Contax Sonnar 2.8/135 for small money and a remarkable lens, a TTArtisan 1.4/50 ASPH in E-mount. It's 99% like a Leica Summilux but for pennies. Truth be told, the TTArtisan brings me the most joy (for the£109 as new, open box deal).

    I found the Milvus version for about $1300. Not sure if I want it, as there are mixed reviews about it being pretty soft in the corners, and there generally aren’t many reviews about it. There are probably better options, but I just like look of the lens, feel and look of the images. This might sound like a weird combination, but I will use it on my Sony a7R IV. I would love to just stick to a DSLR with it, but it’s harder to manual focus and Canons generally have lower dynamic range. For my use, I want better dynamic range. I don’t like Nikon lenses or the aperture rings for Zeiss lenses on Nikon, so I would never go that road. But if I could live with the dynamic range of the Canon 5DSR or 5D Mark IV and find a way to focus properly at most times without changing the prism, I might just go back to DSLRs. Just love some of the Zeiss lenses and also a lot of Canon lenses. I also care a lot about how the setup looks, and it would look stupid to log around with an adapter and Zeiss lenses on Sony.
