Omg! 🤦🏾‍♂️ this is what happens when you're not intelligent enough to question the things we're taught in school or the things we read in history books. You set the countries you colonised back hundreds of years. India was one of the richest countries on earth before the British looted everything, caused famines and killled tens of millions. Now you want to say you did them a favour? They still haven't recovered fully from what your ancestors did. So do your research before you say such foolish and insulting things.

Arabs and Berbers held Portugal from the 8th century to the 14th century. Arabs and Berbers conquered Spain in the 8th century and were finally expelled in 1492. The Ottoman Turks conquered and held the Balkans for 400 years. The border between the Archdukes of Austria and the Ottoman Sultans was 50 miles south of Vienna for over a hundred years, The conquered and held Sicily for two hundred years. Cyprus and Crete for 400 years. The Crimea for 300 years. The Algerian pirates raided the shores of Christian Europe, all the way into the English Channel and across the Atlantic for 350 years. The Arab Jihad conquered and forcibly converted through the sword and social, political and economic oppression areas which had been Christian for over 300 years. Egypt, Libya, North Africa, Judea, Syria, Asia Minor were all part of the Roman Empire. Syria, Judea and Palestine became a battleground between the Arabs, Kurds and other Muslims and the Christian Eastern Roman Empire from 625-1097 CE. The Sassanid Persians, who had been fighting Rome for 400 years was driven under by the Great Jihad in a hundred years. The Crusaders were COUNTER-OFFENSIVES by Christian Europeans to recover these lost lands after the Eastern Roman Empire lost them for good with the Battle of Manzikert in 1097. The Crusades lasted less than 300 years. The death of the Caliphates in Baghdad and elsewhere in the Middle East and the destruction of the Arab world wasn't due to the Crusaders who never got closer than 500 miles to the city. It was the Mongols and Tamerlane that destroyed the cities, villages and irrigation systems of Iraq. The occupation of Algeria by the French in the 19th century was a reaction to the Algerian pirates and their raids and selling French, Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese captives into slavery when they couldn't be ransomed. The French occupied Lebanon and Syria in 1921 and left by 1949. The British occupied Egypt in 1888 and left by 1951. Palestine in 1921 and left by 1948. Iraq in 1921 and gone by 1954. Italy occupied Libya in 1912 and left by 1945. The heart of Islam was never occupied by the Europeans. The idea that Christian Europeans somehow conquered and held areas of the Middle East which were originally Muslim is flawed, because except for Saudi Arabia and the coastal enclaves on the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf, the lands the Europeans occupied had been themselves conquered and occupied by Muslims, lands that had been part of a Christian Roman Empire.

In Spain we have a saying, "there are moros* on the coast" (Hay moros en la costa), which means that you have to be prudent and cautious in the face of more than certain danger, or this other one, "There are no moros* on the coast" (No hay moros en la costa), which means the opposite, there are no dangers in sight. Both sayings are the result of the innumerable Berber raids that the Spanish coasts suffered for centuries at the hands of the Berber and Muslim pirates of North Africa in order to capture the Spaniards of that time to sell them as slaves in North Africa. The Muslims for centuries were magnificent slave traders, until the Europeans banned slavery in the 19th century. The author of Don Quixote himself, D. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, was a slave in Algiers for five years until his family, with financial help from friars, could pay for his release, they had to pay 500 escudos of Spanish gold. Piracy was supported by the Ottomans. *Moro or moros in plural is a person who professes the islamic religión.

People from the Middle East and Africa run to Europe and the UK, because things work in these countries. Then instead of emulating the culture of the West, they bring in their values and soon the once thriving communities are overwhelmed and slide downwards. It is as if the immigranrs are not capable of upliftment and progress but just indolence and turpitude. Similar trends in the USA and Australia and New Zealand. It is also a fact that countries in Africa clonised by Europeans, in general are worse off than under Colonial rule. Only in Southern and Eastern Asia are there countries that are progressing into shining examples of real growth.

The woman who spoke against the motion also claimed that the European colonial powers stole the wealth of their colonies. That is technically correct, in that European imperialists did steal things from the foreign countries they ruled, but so incomplete that it is really false, for the simple reason that, on balance, the European overseas empires transferred wealth from Europe to the overseas empires, considerably more wealth than they took out. And this is easy to prove: when Britain, the biggest of the European imperial powers, was broke and desperate for cash after World War Two, what did they do? Liquidated the empire. If the empire had been a source of wealth for Britain, that would have made no sense: why give up the empire when you most need it. But it makes perfect sense if, as was the case, the empire was a drain on its resources that Britain could no longer afford. But also, consider that the European imperial powers were building railroads, bridges, paved roads, modern port facilities, telecommunications, factories, mines, and other modern facilities throughout their overseas empires. That was enormous transfer of wealth to the empires from Europe.

Ovet a century ago a British merchant came to my slice of Borneo and defeated the local pirate warlords at the behest of the Muslim Brunei kingd. He was given the whole region and became the first fo the 3 White Rajahs. The Rajahs let in Christian missionaries and slowly the pagan worshiping portions of the country converted. Over a decade ago the Muslim federal government was going through waves of internal religious "enlightenments" as numerous young policy makers were returning from their studies in places like Pakistan and the Arab countries. They didn't like my state's Christian-majority population so they started sending their Muslim teachers under the guise of filling in the severe lack of teachers. Initially, they sent a couple of hundreds per year. Then, one day they declared that they will start sending in tens of thousands of their teachers to "help" us every year. We, local Muslims and non-Muslims alike, saw the scam right away and rejected their proposal.

Ultimately, it boils down to this: in today's world, those who criticize colonialism are often the descendants of those who engaged in it and, to use a common phrase, have lost. No longer able to take what they want, they now request reparations and concessions that have been previously granted and utilized. We have been addressing the consequences of colonialism for centuries. Moreover, we continue to aid many of the same nations that now express dissatisfaction and demand more. In most instances, these countries have prospered more from our involvement than they had prior. It is also notable that many critics of the West have worse records on human rights and infrastructure due to their own shortcomings. These nations are often embroiled in conflict and violence, which they attribute to the West, despite a history of internal and external strife. It is somewhat ironic that while they criticize the West, they also aspire to partake in and benefit from the advancements it has fostered, which is both laughable and pathetic.

And, of course, what about the Roman Empire? Nobody is suggesting Italy pay reparations for her previous crimes. Like Douglas pointed out, almost every race has had its turn at colonizing, and all are guilty of crimes. That was in the past. You can't hold current generations responsible for the sins of their ancestors. Oh, and one final point, which very few reparations protagonists mention. Who finally abolished slavery, on a global scale? Yup, the British Empire, at massvie cost to themselves, with thousands of Royal Navy sailors dying in battles with slavers of nations not yet willing to end their abominable trade.

The Newcomen engine was 20hp. Following that Watt's early engines were 200hp. Each subsequent improvement by whoever increased horse power while the numbers made increased exponentially. It is better to understand wealth by how much horse power a nation can generate and in the case of Great Britain we quickly surpassed all previous empires combined - we were then surpassed by others that were able to copy our production methods and so create wealth. We still measure engines using horse power. Dangerously the eco-zealots are working very hard to end modern farming and the deliberate production of power.

Otherwise a similar debate could be having 1 white, 1 black 1 Arab 1 Asian, all commit a crime that results in the loss of many lives. BUT only the white bloke is put before a court, the others being let off. This is where the "blind" justice should come in, do not look at colour, race, religion etc only look at the who, why, when...

The facts appear to have eluded many of these students thoughts surrounding slavery, it’s been around forever and would seem that the emphasis is on the African continent, it was recognised that there were long standing events of kidnapping within the tribal groups throughout their communities and enslaving them, you really need to educate yourself in these issues.

BS. A colonial power has military, economic and political power over lands not originally held at any time in history by the people who have created this colonial power. The EU is primarily an economic bloc that is loosely politically aligned. Unlike the Chinese, Russians, and several other nations, the EU has no occupation forces anywhere in the world. The EU has never invaded a neighbor for economic and political gain. Not like China and Tibet, Inner Mongolia and Manchuria. Or Russia and the Crimea or the Caucasus or Ukraine. And don't blabber about the US. The US has not added to its core territories since 1898 while granting independence to the Philippines and mandated islands originally occupied by Japan. US troops are stationed in a number of countries at the INVITATION of the host country's government or because such a government doesn't exist to exercise national sovereignty over territory being used by non-state actors engaged in anti-Western terrorism, like the Algerian pirates.

I generally agree with Douglas Murray, but he relies on rhetoric a bit too much. Like his question "Why is it European colonialism that people are against and not Turkish colonialism?" It's pretty obvious, that the reason is that European empire/colonialism, namely Protestant Chirstianity, is the foundation of the existing world order, and international law, and it's that order that people want to topple. Can't have a global caliphate if the foundation of the law globally remains Chirstian. It's also the case that these anti-European arguments are made by nations with over population issues that want to spread into the territories of Europeans and their descendants, so it's convienent to use colonialism as a means to shut down any vocalized opposition to such an agenda. Why is one or two people threatening? How many missionaries were sent into various nations and tribal people? One? Two? And now we have billions of people who follow from the changes those one or two people made. Any number of people is threatening when the intention of those people is to subvert, assimilate, dominate, and augment the group that they've entered into. One well placed bad actor can make all the difference.

Brilliant from Murray as always...but please mr youtuber your commentary lacks depth and understanding. Its not about allowing vast numbers in your country which in itself is a problem but looking for cultural similarity and not a pluralistic society. You should identify key shared fundamental principles of the people coming in.

The reason countries and borders exist in the first place is because of our differences. We've spent centuries sorting ourselves out so similar peoples can live together. If we all thought alike and had the same values, fair enough, countries without borders could work, but just look at the internet, it proves we can't even co-exist with people of different opinions. Start trying to mix us up and we'll just sort into culturally similar groups again, probably by fighting.
