This was a great reaction to one of my favorite Angelina Jordan songs! Thanks! Happy to say her grandma Mery Zamani is still living, though she's had some health issues the past 2 or 3 years. This song is a tribute, as far as many of us can tell, to her family in general and, IMO, specifically to her Mom Sara Astar. She was 11 or 12 when she wrote "Shield," and 12 when she performed it. Her paternal grandfather passed in, I think, the spring of 2018, at which time she did a very emotional tribute to him with Elvis' song "Always on My Mind" (please react!). Then, her maternal grandfather (Mery's husband) passed in the fall of 2019. The following year, 2020, Angelina signed with Republic Records in August at age 14. Shortly after signing, she released "Million Miles" in honor of her maternal grandfather, and that was her first official Republic release, followed by "7th Heaven" in the spring of 2021. That "jolt" from the first few notes underscored the intangibles laced into the very special GIFTS our Angel possesses. That most lovely character rests on the foundation of appreciation & respect for her family, aka "keepers of the treasure". Just a correction here dear. This was not written about the passing of a Grandmother. You are thinking of 'Million Miles' which she wrote about her grandfather whom she lost about a year after this. I believe she wrote it about her family. Thus the Chorus 'you are my fire ... the woman looking over me' which, I believe refers to her mother and perhaps her grandmother. The chorus 'Surround me by Angels', I believe refers to her fans. All of those who have been surrounding and protecting her. Love the reaction dear. This is why many considered her a child prodigy and a musical genius ,the musical knowledge that she demonstrated at such a young age showjust what a unbelievable talent she is in every part of music

The previous video to which you reacted was “What is Life?”, another song written by Angelina. She was 11 for that, and today’s song, Shield, was written when she was 12. Both are amazingly self-reflective for a child, and both show Angelina’s love for her family. In Shield, she shows her appreciation for how they have shepherded her through her young career, and she asks for their protection in the future. I am always struck by the line in Shield, “Forgive me for all that I am”, which tells us that 12 year old Angelina is able to step outside of the celebrity that she surely wants to realize the extra burden that it puts on her family. That’s a remarkable self-assessment by a child. Angelina is a musical prodigy, but she is also very special in other ways. A reactor had the best summary of that when he said that Angelina is cut different than the rest of us.

@@103mrg Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure because I always saw the same picture of the grandfather. Once with "You are always on my mind" and once with Million Miles on the wall. As far as I know (which doesn't mean anything ;-)) Bohemian Rhapsody was recorded in October 2019 and in the interview she also talked about her grandfather and how nice it would be if he could hug her again. But she probably had a close relationship with both of them.

It's just amazing at 12-13 she already was a superstar showing original vibes. All of us angel fans see her as epic with the potential to change the landscape of the music industry.

Angelina mentioned in a tv interview that she got a bit of inspiration of the sound for the song from the James Bond movies. Diamonds are Forever and Goldfinger are some of her favorites. She also mentioned that, "the song is about someone you love, wherever you are, it's a strong love, that protects you." Many feel she is talking about her family. She did write the song and helped to arrange it. I believe the song you are actually thinking about is called Million Miles. That song was a dedicated to her grandfather, but also to those who have lost a loved one. That is definitely a song that can make you shed some tears at times....

I am 70 y old and have never heard a singer like her in my whole life. She is on another level. Her voice touches my heart and cleanses my soul. ❤

I don't think this was a tribute to the passing of her grandparent. It is thought to be dedicated to the love and support that her family gave her from childhood, to protect her as she grew up, especially from the evils of the industry. Her mother and grandmother have been her shield from the beginning. Her original song, A Million Miles, was dedicated to the passing of her grandfather and also to all of us who have lost a loved one. A very emotional song. I would recommend the studio or music video version. Thanks for an enjoyable reaction.

👣It is remarkable that a 10 - 12 year old writes lyricks like this. I feel confident that it`s mainly her work, and that her great co-writers was in on the music and arrangement side, mainly. It is so personal and wise. Even for such a young girl to express the awearness of needing a protectiv shield in the world from the family and her surroundings. Not the least in the world of the music industry, that she had been approaching more and more closely. I assume she was growing her awearness of this, as her family had been forsed to consider time and time again, contackts from record labels and companies. Even Disney had been turned down by her family rather early. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, Angelina`s greatest fan and inspirational mentor, made a music-video for this song. As she also did for "Fly me to the moon" and "When you`re smiling" before this one. Grandma Mery even fet. in the video of her first EP singel this year, "Love Don`t Let Me Go". There are actually two popular videos of this song. One is set near train tracks and bears the clear imprint of her maternal grandma. The other may be a fan video (never really checked credits) and showcases video from a live performance, although not necessarily of this song.

This is a beautifully touching song. Like her original song, “What iIs Life” it shows what a thoughtful, loving, humble person she is. Her gift is endless love and compassion. Singing, special arrangements of covers, songs that were written specifically for her and on own originals, is how that love flows from her to the world. We, her Angels (as she calls her fans) have our hearts filled and our souls nourished, when we listen to her. We are not stalkers. We are, however under her spell. She and her family have generously shared so much of her almost 18 years, that we feel like she is family, As we are with our own children and Grandchildren, we are very proud of her and maybe at times over protective of her. It’s is out of love. You will find gat many fans, talk about she has changed their lives for the better, myself included. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on KZread. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website, angelinajordanofficial Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on KZread went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed Frank Sinatra “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on KZread. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On KZread, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as Rusty Shackleford has put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Yes, and I was expecting her to react to that one. It was on Skavlan TV and he interviews her beforehand. She even sings some of her favorite Bond film song acapela, Diamonds Are Forever, for him. It's a great interview. Starts off in a Scandinavian language and they switch to English. He discovers that Angelina finds singing and writing easier than speaking. He asks her who does she become when she sings and she replies: "When I sing I go to another world. In the world, it’s like, endless. You've got some of the information wrong I think. This was not a tribute to the loss of a grandparent 🙂 It was more her tribute to her family and fans. But she did lose both of her grandfathers around this age, that is correct. Take care ♥

It wasn’t written for her grandmother necessarily. She’s still alive. The general consensus is this song was written as a loving tribute to her mother and the rest of her family, whom she, at the age of 12, realizes the sacrifices they have made in their life to support her dream and keep her safe from the evils of the industry in the process. I think when she pleads “forgive me for all that I am” she’s acknowledging that her obsessive musical genius is the reason for those sacrifices, but she can’t help it. It’s who she is to her core and they understood and made those sacrifices. I’m sure her grandmother, being a prodigy herself, was infinitely aware of how that felt. Now, imagine having a 12 yo child with the level of self-reflection and genius necessary to come up with this song. I can’t help but think it would fill you to tears of appreciation and joy. It brought me to tears and I’m not even related to her. She never ceases to fascinate and amaze me.

A paean to her family. Beautiful and humble, she is asking their forgiveness for her talent, the aspirations that go with that talent, because they are always, and I mean always, there for her.
