Unchained Melody Nobel Peace Prize 2023 Some ask why Angelina Jordan would pick Unchained Melody for this event, Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist who received the prestigious award remains incarcerated today in Iran. One of the most popular and enduring love songs of all time, Unchained Melody, has a surprising origin. It was composed for a 1955 film called Unchained, which tells the story of a man who is incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. He yearns to be free and reunite with his wife and children, who are waiting for him outside. The song captures his emotions of loneliness, hope and longing, and has been covered by many artists over the years, but none in my lifetime of 76 years have conveyed such emotion as Angelina Jordan did at this performance. © Larry D. There are three things that make this performance particularly significant: She is Norwegian and Norway is the home of the Nobel Peace Prize; her grandmother is Iranian; and Unchained Melody was written about a prisoner longing to be reunited with a loved one. The honoree, Narges Mohammadi is in prison for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran. What is truly disgusting is that she was sentenced to a total of 31 years and 154 lashes. It must be especially heart wrenching for Angelina, given her Iranian heritage and her empathy for the disadvantaged and downtrodden.

And her empathy for Narges Mohammadi's two children, twins, at the same age as Angelina. Ali and Kiani Rahmani had in this tv program just told the audience about their mother whom they haven't seen since they were 8 years old. Kiani also tells us that she doesn't think she ever will see her mother again.

Mery Zamani the most important influence in Angelina Jordans life.*** One of the most important factors that influenced and shaped Angelina's musical taste and talent is her grandmother, Mery Zamani. She is a Persian poet and artist who introduced Angelina to different genres and cultures of music. She taught Angelina how to sing in Farsi, Arabic, and English, and exposed her to the rich heritage of Persian music. Angelina has said that her grandmother is her biggest inspiration and role model. She has also incorporated some elements of Persian music into her own songs, such as the use of quarter tones, modal scales, and rhythmic patterns. © Larry D. Pifer

The original song was written for a movie in 1955, called Unchained. Its a story of a man imprisoned, longing for his loved ones, faced with a decision. Grandma Mery and Angelina, knowing this story, rightly chose it to honor Narges and her children. Narges is currently in an Iranian prison today. all the performers are Persian, so is Angelina's Grandma, so it was appropriate that Angelina was honored to perform. Great reaction, Red.

Please Don't Cry Angelina Jordan's fans were moved to tears by her stunning performance of Unchained Melody at the Pulitzer Price ceremony in Oslo, Norway with the KORK Orchestra. The young singer, who captivated the audience with her soulful voice, told her angels in an interview that she hoped they would not cry when they listened to her, as she felt the emotion of the event and might cry herself when she watched it later. But we believe that crying is not a negative thing, it's an expression of joy and emotion when we witness her. Thank you for your genuine reaction. What a perfect and appropriate song for this occasion. Unchained Melody was first performed in the movie “Unchained”. The story is about an individual held in a medium security prison who is struggling with the choice of escaping or completing his sentence. He decided to complete his sentence and through the song sends a message to his loved one “I’ll be coming home, wait for me”. Through this song, Angelina is delivering Narges Mohammadi (who is imprisoned in Iran) message to her husband and children “I’ll be coming home, wait for me “. Angelina poured her emotions in this song. We all felt it.

It lost to "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing", which was a box office hit, and the movie was nominated for many awards, and won several. Charity she donated the 80,000 dollars she won on Norway’s Got Talent Angelina Jordan won Norway’s Got Talent at the age of 8 in 2014, the prize for winning was eighty thousand dollars, this money was donated to children’s charities. At age 8 her first charity performance was in Germany to raise money for heart disease. Again, at age 8 she does a telethon for Plan International Children’s Charity. Still at age 8 she performs for Norwegian Sea Rescue Society Charity. On the 12th of Dec still at age 8, she performs at Save The Child Nobel Peace Prize, 4 days later, even though she has a very bad cold, she performs for the Swedish Heroes Foundation against her doctor's orders. At age 10 she performed for the Norwegian Refugee Council Charity. Also age 10 she performed in Seoul in South Korea for Rotary International to raise money for children’s vaccinations. John Gary vs Angelina Jordan Unchained Melody One of the most memorable experiences of my life was seeing John Gary perform live in Seattle, WA, when I was 20 years old. He had such a powerful and beautiful voice that filled the whole auditorium. During the break, he sat down on the edge of the stage and played his guitar, singing Unchained Melody with so much emotion and passion. It was a sublime moment that I shared with my wife, and I felt like we were the only ones in the room. At that time, I thought to myself; how could anyone top that performance, but 56 years later a 17-year-old Angelina Jordan just did. Angelina Jordan's performance at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Norway in 2023 blew me away. She sang with such passion and emotion that I felt every word in my soul. She truly captured the essence of the song and made it her own. and she is only 17-year-old. I have never heard anything like it before, this genius never ceases to amaze me.

It's so interesting to read your comment. I've felt this from the start. From first hearing Angelina's performance. This was the 'real life' moment that the movie attempted to create... I've loved this song from back in the 50s. Long before the Righteous Brother's incredible performance... It took 68 years, but Angelena brought it to another level... A live performance in front of an orchestra. Singing to the Peace Prize community. Such a delicate and thoughtful presentation... Her rendition and presentation turned what had been a song of romantic longing to a message of loss. Loss of a family. She's singing for an imprisoned Mother who hasn't seen her children in 9 years. Who may never see them again. And, they're sitting right there in front of her... What an emotional situation... And, what an incredible presentation... It took a while but this very special piece of music finally found a home in Angelena Jordan and Narges Mohammedi that night in Oslo.

I believe that most Norwegians sat in front of their TV with tears in their eyes, like a lot of us fans/angels did. The NOBEL Prizes are, I think, the only honorations for every human being, regardless of color, religion and nationallity. It is indipendent. The highest praise a human being can get. So to sing for the whole world, especially the imprisoned woman in Iran is nothing to sneeze at. You my Dear, be healthy and enjoy life. Respectfully Elmar from Germany

The context of this majestic rendition of "Unchained Melody" must be taken into account. AJ was singing in front of an audience of officials and on a special occasion, the presentation of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. What's more, this year's recipient of the prize is 51-year-old Iranian journalist Narges Mohammadi, currently imprisoned as she has been many times since 1998. And don't forget that AJ's grandmother, Mery Zamani, is Iranian. We can therefore assume that she feels particularly concerned by her country of origin, and that the imprisonment of a woman as courageous as Narges Mohammadi does not leave her indifferent.

The emotion, respect and sensibility which she sang this song reflects her empathy for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian woman who is currently in prison in Iran for her activism towards women's rights. Her twin daughter and son and her husband were there. If you pay attention, you can see all that in the whole performance but specially when she sang "Wait for me, wait for me, I'll be coming home, wait for me" God bless Narges and that she comes home to her family soon 🙏

I was moved to see and hear Angelina singing in such an incredibly mature and charming way, this wonderful version of a fantastic song and so appropriate to the occasion, 8 years after the last time, in the same studios and with some of the musicians who accompanied her as a child, when she took her first steps into her musical future. I thought "Unchained Melody" was a odd choice for this event, but have since learned the history of the song. More on that later. Certainly Angelina was thrilled to be performing back in her home country of Norway, where she is a national treasure, but this performance goes way beyond that honor. She first performed at the Save the Children event at the 2014 Peace Prize event, when she was 8 years old. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges, is currently on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian. We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family. I hope all the angels will spread the story of Narges and her mission, with the hope for change. (edited) In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release.

OMG The words never had a more profound meaning. I felt as if Narges was singing to those she loves---"I'll be coming home, wait for me". Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Thank you, Angelina, for choosing and performing the perfect song. My guess is there were many tears in the audience. I would add that this is Angelina's second performance at a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. She was 8 the first time and sang "What a Wonderful World". Angelian is one of only a handful to perform at more than one Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Loved your reaction, Red.

Each time she performed this previously, Angelina stayed 'spot on' with Bobby Hadield's 'Gold Standard' rendition. However, this time she applies more of her jazz inspired roots, much of which she learned from Billie Holiday. That would be the 'breathy', 'whisper-like' elements invented by Billie, as well as 'sprinkling' in Angelina's own natural 'rasp' and 'silky smooth' delivery that delivers the most emotion laden, penetrating rendition of this song I have ever heard. It's fitting when you realize it is being performed as a tribute to an exceptionally brave woman who is the recipient of this year's 'Nobel Prize For Peace' . Not even Bobby's great rendition could ever hope to reach the inner depths of my being like this performance does. I would think that if Bobby heard it from the 'far beyond' it would have brought a tear to his eye as it did to me.

Angelina Jordan sings this to each of the family members--Narges Mohammadi in an Iranian prison, her twins in Paris, her husband in Paris. This song was written about someone in prison, so it was quite an appropriate song for her to sing on this occasion. She sang it like a lullaby and quietly full of each person's longing. Moves me to tears every time I hear it. Angelina did look like royalty and gave her heart. I agree with you, stunning and perfect. Thank you. Grandma Ellen, out with a jingle.

With very few exceptions - Angelina has always chosen what songs she sings and how she sings them - she has been doing her own vocal arrangements since she was 7-8 years old - Angelina has stated that when she was very little her mother would ask her to sing nursery rhymes and kids songs but she flatly refused instead she wanted to sing jazz songs. Here is one interview where she states this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5l7ra1-fLbWms4.html

Mery Zamani is the most important influence in Angelina Jordans life. One of the most important factors that influenced and shaped Angelina's musical taste and talent is her grandmother, Mery Zamani. © Larry D. Pifer I errored, I forgot to add the fact that Mery also taught AJ how to speak and sing in Japanese, remember Mery's first husband, and father to Sara was Japanese. Farsi and Arabic music have some similarities, but also many differences. Both languages use the same script, but Farsi has more vowels and consonants than Arabic. Both languages have a rich musical tradition, but Farsi music is more influenced by Persian, Turkish, and Indian cultures, while Arabic music is more influenced by African, Mediterranean, and Islamic cultures. Both languages use a system of musical modes called maqam or dastgah, but they have different scales, rhythms, and instruments. Farsi music often uses the santur, the tar, the setar, and the daf, while Arabic music often uses the oud, the qanun, the nay, and the darbuka. To sum it up, all music is synergetic.
