Eva was such an amazing talent, it is such a shame that she was taken from us so early. (F*ck cancer). Her acoustic version of Somewhere over the Rainbow is an absolute vocal masterpiece. I would love to hear AJ do a cover of her version.

Absolutely beautiful singers and both are so dynamic and heartwarming in their own deliveries ! But together they sound very much alike with slightly different nuances and inflections ! God created Angelina to carry on and to bring joy and happiness to the world ! Eva has become an angel and sits above us all knowing that Angelina will continue her unfinished business ! I love Eva and she is a beautifully talented artist who plays a masterful guitar as she sings ! Eva and Angelina are both wonderful in their own styles and both have beautiful voices. I love both versions, but I have to say that, given an only choice as a "go to," it would have to be Angelina's. From what little I've learned of Eva Cassidy, she was a wonderful human being. It's sad that she only achieved real fame as a singer posthumously, much like the great poetess Emily Dickinson did after her death.

I absolutely love Eva Cassidy. Her version of this song is sublime. That said, when I first heard AJ do hers, it felt like time froze. I cant find the words either. There is something there in her take on the song, intangible maybe, but definitely there that no one else I've ever heard can do. While we all know Judy Garland's version from the Wizard of Oz, Eva does something different. She performed this less than a year before cancer took her and it almost feels like she knows that as she sings this. I think you'll really dig her guitar arrangement on this as well. The original by Sting is great. Both interpretations by Eva and Angelina make it such a delicate wonderful song. So sad that Eva is no longer with us. Two absolute legends of singing! I've loved Eve's version, and until AJ came along (and recorded this on her iPhone!!) Eve was the only one for this song. So sad we lost Eve so young. Angelinas singing is just beyond... Words fall short. Like you say BEL, she is very free form, being jazz at the core. Somehow, she has an uncanny ability to time her phrasing JUST right.

In fact, it seems that it is simply the breadth, the depth of Angelina Jordan's voice, the octaves she covers that make the difference. A voice like that in the field of song is still rare if not exceptional. I think if you try to use vocal technical terms with Angelina to explain her art, you're in trouble. She isn't in that box. She has her own space. Other vocalists, whose version may be technically flawless and beautiful, don't manage to penitrate the heart and soul like Angelina. No other vocalist has made me shed a tear. Angelina, a river of tears. That can't be explained technically. It's as if her soul is in touch with the heavens, and when she sings, she shares it with me.

I'm sorry Andy's message didn't get you in time as the best way to appreciate Eva is to listen to her legendary version of Over the Rainbow, probably the finest ever recorded. The backstory is that Eva who was a blues, jazz, and folk singer and guitarist, passed away in 1996 at only 33 years old, of melanoma. She was not as well known prior to her death although she was building a following as Angelina has been, but post humorously she became an international legend, selling over 10 million records. She has, in the opinions of many, the most beautiful and expressive voices ever heard. Over the Rainbow as she does it is beautiful yet haunting, almost a premonition Of what was coming. Ron, Eva’s versions of Autumn Leaves, both acoustic and orchestral, are sublime. I have thought of doing a mashup with Angelina’s version but I think the versions are too different to mesh well.

But for me and for many, Eva's version of Over the Rainbow is a classic that I don't think can be matched. Judy Garland obviously is the benchmark, but personally, I prefer Eva's version.

ANGELINA was I believe aged 11 when she covered " over the rainbow " but I wouldn't dare compare her version with that of the incredible Eva cassidy . would another virtual duet work probably love to hear that .

@@tomwhite4736 Tom, yes, the 11 year old version was 'nice'. I don't know if a virtual duet would work. Eva's rendition was 'loaded' and at times her tempo was incredibly soft and slow. A big challenge, of course, but if Angelina does it alone and adds her touch to Eva's perfect arrangement it could turn out to be something fantastic. We shall see.

I never noticed that before, but you are absolutely on pointe. Having listened to Eva Cassidy's version for years - and knowing her tragic life story, which can impose the song with such melancholy - it is hard to say Angelina's version is better...but it may be. Her rendition needs to stand a test of time, but her naturally lower, slightly more throaty version, makes it feel more personal, just like so many of songs. It is how she owns so many covers.

I can’t be politically correct on this. I can only listen to Angelina with enjoyment. If I could be convinced that gods and goddesses walk the Earth, then I would have absolutely no doubt that Angelina is the goddess of vocal song.

Eva Cassidy was a great singer, and storyteller, but she was not on the same level as Angelina Jordan. I was and am still a fan of Eva from her beginning to her sad ending and I never experienced what I do with AJ, with each and every performance. With Angelina your heart rate increases, you find it difficult to catch your breath, chills and shells engulf you and you can't wait till you feel that sensation again, and again. Even Celine Dion can't move me like this young lady can and Celine is one of the greatest singers that has ever lived.

Eva's band was desperate to get something on record(no record contract), so they scraped together enough of their own money to have a friend with a mobile recording setup do a live two night session at Blues Ally. The first nights recording was unusable due to technical issues, so everything depended on the second nights results that was turned into the Live at Blues Ally record. The amateur video of some of that nights performance was unplanned, but resulted in one of the very few examples of Eva preforming her magic. Talent alone won't grantee success and life isn't always fair, Eva died that same year. Live at Blues Ally didn't chart until two years after she died, she never knew how many people came to lover her music.

Beautiful both of them but I think Eva approach is more expected and I find more creativity, musical intelligence in AJ rendition .

Without taking anything away from all the great stars she has covered, they all are great artists, but the main difference between them and AJ is that they just SING you a song, as perfect and proficient it might be, Angelina doesn't just sing you a song, just as the above, she tells you A STORY we can all relate to. The timing is a jazz singer versus a folk singer, stylistic thing. I suspect the jazz timing looseness is harder to do (properly) than the strict timing of folk songs, like you gotta learn to do it the right way first and then figure out how to play around with it so it sounds good?

What I have to take into account is the fact that Eva is 40, here. Angelina recorded this in her room…at 15! 🌺

Both are great separately. But what is the point with the uncomfortable overlay, to show that their phrasings are a rhythmical mismatch?

i have a pesonal rule against "who is better than who" ccomparisons ... but ... since you did. Angela is outstanding, and may become great .... but IMHO there is a reason she tries to emulates Eva.... I feel that evaluating either of these artists in disconnected phrase snippets rather than an intact song performance does a disservice to both of them And to some extent, this over tracked recording does too. Since you said you have already listed to a lot of Angelina, I recommend you listen to Eva by herself, with Over the Rainbow as a starting point.

The first I've heard of her was on a sound track in a movie (Notting Hill) some 20 years ago. She was singing Time After Time from Cindy Lauper. I was hooked. Give it a listen, you'll be amazed 🙂.

I love Angelina Jordan, but I think Eva Cassidy's version captured the fullness of the song. I don't really like this mash up. I think their styles are too different. Beautiful in their own right but apples and oranges.

The overlapping of voices is not a good job. People get creative and screw it up.

Eva's was, is, and always will be the best cover of this song. Angelina is a great talent on her own but, in this song, has way too much affectation in her delivery and is pretty one dimensional in this song, and has obviously listened to Eva's version. Kind of sacriligious to compare two talents of this caliber. Angelina has her great covers and Eva has hers. Comparison is not necessary.
