My brother and I had a severum that used to play peacekeeper in the tank. He'd interrupt bullying attempts by other fish. He even kept a green terror in check.

I have both in the same tank and love them both. But one thing that you forgot to mention is Angels tend to be A LOT cheaper than Severums by almost twice the price.

Very true , here in the uk the angels are cheaper than Severums , angels are more readily available,,,

I had a Gold Severum named Daisy in a 55 about 20 years ago. She lived to be about 8. One day I saw her struggling to breathe, I could see a small piece of plastic plant in her throat. I got some tweezers and a towel, netted her and put on my lap, I quickly removed the plant from her throat and put her back in the tank. She was very grateful and happy after that 😃 (and yes I took that plant out of the tank!) She loved being pet and would kiss my finger. She was my aquatic pup! 💛🐶🐠

I've never had severum, but they're beautiful. Angels do bring up lots of nostalgia for me. My family used to have a 125g and the angels in there got huge. They were majestic! I don't know if I'll ever have a big tank again, but if I did, I would get angels. Great video! Thanks!

After seeing your red spot gold sevrums when I first found the channel they became one of my bucket list fish.

I have both in a community tank and it's fully planted. The Red Spotted Severum has only been in the tank for a month so I guess we will see if he starts to chew on the plants, but so far so good. Once my custom tank arrives, the Severum and the Angel will be moved to the new tank along with some electric blue acara, Uaru, and some more Severum's.

I am so glad you talk about GH and KH. Very important and not widely discussed.

I usually turn down the sound and just watch the video, if I can follow. I knew that would not be the case with these types of videos. I have had fish over the years with not much more than a couple of months success. I am soooooo glad you keep the information simple and to the point. You keep my interest and your voice is just right. Thank you much

Of the two, angelfish for me. Community fish that eat plants is a no go, as I use a lot of plants to help in my filtration. Severums are cool though! I really love blue angels and the red shoulder angels. The manacapuru angels are definitely a bucket list fish! Thank you for the video.

Perfect timing. I have both but just got my red spotted gold severum. They're awesome fish. One is very social and the other is super shy.

I have both and I agree with what you said about each. I enjoy each as they have their own characteristics. I have had a pair of gold severums 8" for about 5 years now in a 125 gallon tank, and they need every inch of the tank. I have had luck growing Java fern in their tank. I am also experimenting with potted Amazon swords. I enjoy the look of live plants in the aquarium.

I absolutely love your channel, you have such incredible tanks and are so knowledgeable about so many species and help out so many people with these videos

I have both and love both! I just got into the angels and now I’m hooked. My bonded pair of turquoise Severums have spawned about 45-50 times. They’re currently guarding eggs while I’m typing my response. Angels are so graceful when they swim. Both fly up to the tank when I approach them.

I have managed to keep plants with my severums. I have water wisteria (fast growing) and I regularly feed leafy greens: romaine lettuce , bok choy and Swiss chard. They eat the greens and leave the wisteria alone but even if the chew on it, it grows so quickly that it recovers. In my community tank I keep angels, severums and geophagus together and they are very compatible.

I love this, I'm still looking for a centerpiece for my 55 gallon community and have been considering angelfish. Would you consider covering festivums/mesonauta species? I'd love to have some reliable information about them before I make my choice.

I have both and they all are great.

My brother's got a 300 gallon with some severums, a geo, corys, plecos, and a big school of denison barbs; it's amazing to watch but that severum is both stunning and absolutely the boss of the tank and HUGE, probably 10" and thick. Gorgeous fish.

I have kept both and have to say I am much more fond of severums. They have amazing personalities and seem to mix well with other fish. I also love their colors. I plan on having a severum tank with a couple of different types when I have the room for a big enough tank.

I love watching you all. I always learn a lot. Hopefully we get a chance to meet in Orlando 😊

This video couldn't have come at a better time. I have 3 Geo Redhead Tapajos in quarantine right now. About 2 1/2 inches. After quarantine they will be in a 125 gallon tank. My question is how any Serverums would be appropriate. Love your videos!!

Happy Monday. Such a pity Severums destroy plants, but I suppose a nicely scaped tank with just rocks and driftwood would work.

I always liked angel fish. The graceful movement through the water. The long flowing fins and the different varieties. I have heard now that they developed an angel fish that does not grow large, a miniature variety. Have you heard of them? I always kept mine in a 55 gallon tank. Great info you gave!

👍😎 Never kept either, to me Severums look like a cross between an Oscar & an Angelfish. I do want to try Angel’s at some point. 🖖

My red faced golden severums are sterile. The eggs always turn white. My severums do fine with crypts. I have time tested this for about 5 years. In fact I am adding CO2 to a 340 gallon severum tank to grow lush crypts with them. I have not done crypts with my red shoulder severums (only goldens) but will be trying this too

Seeing that I have angelfish I have to go with those although when I get a bigger tank 125 I plan on getting cichlids

I have severums and angel’s in a 55 and they get along.

my severum is in my decently planted tanks and leaves my plants alone, my festivum cichlid is the one that goes after my plants, it all depends on if your severums were raised around plants or not

The plants would be the most important factor for me. Severums are so pretty, but a tank without plants always looks sad to me, lol

My aquarium is heavily planted and I have a Uaru and several Severums. I noticed as long as they have some veggies, crickets, etc, they mostly leave my plants alone

Had both, love both for different reasons, I have a severum at the moment and absolutely adore him. I've managed to fine a few (literally 3) species of plant that are mostly successful at staying planted and a plant that does well floating that he hasn't destroyed 😅 so I had my cake and ate it too but he's not overly destructive and it is just one severum in a community setting. His major downside was he was quite territorial toward the other severum I had to the point I rehomed them so they didn't have to be stressed everyday. Basically Any other species he's been good with.

U need a few severums in there to spread out the aggression. I had large and medium anubis plants and java fern, never touched them. Make sure you throw in some veggies and keep well fed, as it stopped my nibbling on the plants lol

Amazon Swords, Anubias and narrow leaf Java fern. Also have valis in there that I occasionally replant but they stay planted for the most part

Yeah I had 3 but biggest boy was relentless so slowly rehomed. If I had a bigger tank I would have had more to sort out that aggression.

Severums for me!

Me personally.. as a long time fish keeper... I feel like u base the aquarium around the fish themselves... I'm definitely a fan of aquascape tho.. I believe it takes the tank hobby to another level... But once again I believe in showcasing the fish themselves! If I'm going with larger fish especially I'm not going to clutter the tank with plants and driftwood and all types of stone and rocks... A few nice artificial pieces or a 3d background or even inserts... If I'm aquascaping then I'll definitely focus on micro fish... Just looks better and it fits the theme or whatever... The 2 don't mix in my opinion unless you are looking at something on the line of 225-400 gallon aquarium because then it has the ability to showcase an entire ecosystem if done right...

I love ALL there angel fish severums and my discus and all three are held in the same tank!! My tank sits at 80 all the time

I've been thinking about getting back into fish keeping and was trying to decide which I want for my showcase fish, Angelfish or Electric Blue Acara. Now I need to consider Severums! 🤔

I've kept and bred both. What tips the scales for the #1 ranking going to the Angels. There is no easier fish to catch, when bagging up fry for a pet shop!!!!!!

I never had luck keeping angelfish, but I do know why. Lessons learned the hard way.

I have both and I like my severums better. If I had to choose one I'd pick them. They do great in a 125.

I put some duck weed and wild watercress from a spring on a family members land, within a few hours all my angels had eaten all of the watercress. Leaves, roots and all…

I don't have any severums fish but I do like them more than angelfish.

I have Heros notatus (Green Spotted severums) and they destroyed my duckweed problem in just a few days. When I got them I added them to a tank that was overrun with duckweed and it was gone in a matter of 3-4 days. I mean none survived. I no longer have duckweed in any of my tanks. Not having plants in my severum tanks is one of the biggest draw backs to keeping them for me. I planted tanks, but I've settled to having artificial plants in my 125g that has my severum, chocolate cichlids, and Bulgarian Seal Point Zebra angels. If I had to pick between the two species I'd probably go with angels just because I love planted aquariums.

Severum for me. But u guys convinced me of severum as a showcase fish in my cichlid tank. Now I gotta get 2 more tanks cuz I feel sorry for my severum not having a girlfriend. He's just a teenager tho.

Angel fish: had all species - species with least genetic manipulation (silver, marble) live the longest. All my black / ghost / blue angels all die in less than 1 year. Another negative of angels is they are aggressive toward each other - do a T-pick bite - over time kills angels. If I start out with 12 angels in the same tank, after 1-year only have 5 left. Now if I get angels I only put 1 in a tank.

For some reason I struggle keeping angelfish alive. Even when doing everything right. I would say 75 gallon min for angelfish too. They like to live around plants.

Severums I have never had. But I like them but I just always prefer keeping Jack Dempseys instead. Angels I have had for 32 years. Tough Discus I call them. Angelfish are better for a wider appeal also more people can have them due to less tank size and don’t eat plants.

I have kept them both Sevrums got more personality But I could never keep plants with them. Angel fish are great for planted tanks. But overall I like the Sevrums. Both are great community tanks.

Love Severums. Thoughts on adding to a 90 planted community tanks. Thanks

The green angelfish you are speaking of are called Pinoy. You can look us up on Facebook at C3 angelfish. We have a large variety of angelfish including Pinoy.

What plants are the ones at 6:07?

I've decided that for the 5 foot I want to do an around the world community tank featuring Geophagus steindachneri, bristlenose pleco, hoplo catfish and electric blue acara( south America) Congo tetra ( west Africa ) Boesemani rainbows ( papua New guinea) Barbs and yoyo loaches ( asia) Is this a good stock or should I do less fish

Just keep an eye on the Steindachneri and EBA. Sometimes those geos can be a little more on the aggressive side. It could very likely work though.

Wow, hey Professor I just did a water change on the bow front tank that has my panda Cory cats in and some different blood line super reds I picked up ay the swap in November and I found super red fry? No way they got in from any other tank water changes with bucket. I thought the man said fish were three months old and looked it. How young can they breed? I can’t believe they did it this young but don’t have any other explanation.

I've been told you can keep one angel as a centerpiece in a 29gal community tank, but could you instead keep one severum as a centerpiece in that 29gal? I know we'll have to get a not-nano tank eventually bc I want to keep some glass catfish at some point 😍

No 29g is too small for a Severum

Hello beautiful people! I adore my Severum. They are like giant water dogs. I have never owned any Angels. My LFS has some that have a blush pink in them, and those caught my eye. Maybe one day I will pull the trigger.

Severums are pretty sweet giants i love them

Seeing these humongous angelfish at stores makes you wonder why they are recommended for 20 gallons. I've seen big ones living with frontosa, brichardi, synodontis, neons all together in one tank. I was shocked that they were all getting along

I personally wouldn’t put a severum in anything less than a 75 gallon - they get really big.

You would probably have to do all males or all females to keep aggression down, but that isn’t guaranteed to work. One is usually safe.

My gold sevs have squashed the angels picking on each other. They get to chasing one another and a severum kinda lumbers over and says "hey guys whatcha doin" and the angels kinda just back off. Lol big goofy bouncers

I have both angel fish and severum in different tanks. My severum are much less angsty than my angels. I love both, but if I had to pick, I'd pick severum.

Great informative video. You guys are the best! I actually have both we have a red spot gold severum with a koi angelfish in a 58 tall and we have a green severum growing out in a 29 later to be housed in a 75. Will the red spot and Angel be ok when full grown in the 58 tall. They gey along great now but they are both only about 5 to 6 months old with the severim being much bigger at the moment. Any suggestions would be a big help we do have one more 55 not yet setup but have not had any ideas as to what to do with it. Thanks in advance and God bless you and your family

My severum is supposed to be green but he changes colors several times a day. He's right out front as soon as breakfast time comes.

My green severum did that too based on mood - anywhere from almost black to pale green!

ive had both, but of Course The Anglefish is better.

Guess I’m lucky, my red spotted severum doesn’t mess with my plants

I have 5 sevrums from my experience the males are more aggressive with other males with there is a female in the tank otherwise one will show his dominance. My three males are together in a 125 gal tank. I have had to separate the two females in two different 75 gal tanks. With my sevrums the females are the more aggressive ones.

Angelfish. They top most fish in my book

Was lousy Superbowl Sunday and lousy commercials oh well. Was awesome family get together I have the biggest tv :) 75 inches with theater surround sound

l have 10 angels, the only fish i would consider to get instead would be discuss

I love angels.

My green severums are super inqusive, know when I approach the tank and love to eat flakes out of my hand. They act like little puppies.
