Glad you are finding peaceful cichlids, outside the Africans. The gold and red spot variety are a top 5 fish for me out of the hundreds of species I have kept. They live a long time but can get 12 inches in length.

Awesome fish! My Severum eats crickets out of my hand 😀 ive had him for just over 9 months and he is currently about 6inches. Looking forward to many years with him! Im so glad you've moved into South Americans 👍

Weird Ben.....I just bought a Green Severum about an inch or so long. Great fish,hadn`t had one in many years. Great stuff as usual bud !!

I have had experience keeping the green severums. They are pretty, but they do show aggression at times towards other fish. I intend on trying the other varieties though, as I have heard the other types do not seem to show aggression (like yours). Thanks for the clip Ben. Great stuff!!!!!

I recently setup a 75-gallon New World tank & purchased my first Red Shoulder Severum along with 4 Electric Blue Acaras & a Chocolate Cichlid. So far so good!

If you want to keep your Heroes happy put some Desert roots in the top of your tank so that the roots kind of drip down in to the tank. This setup gives the Heroes a chance to swim between the roots which gives them a sense of security and they will calm down😉

I have a gold Severum that is pretty human friendly and feisty, I have some Geophagus (idk which type for sure but they look very similar to yours) growing out I'd like to add to their aquarium eventually but I'm worried the severum will tear them up. Great fish, like having an Oscar almost that can reasonably fit in a 55 gallon.

Love my Sevrum his name is Freckles he's about 4yo and around 7". It is true very sweet and shy fish. If I have a fish that is being punked on in another tank I'll put it in with him to grow out a bit and he's never bothered them. Actually has a small angel fish living with him now its his little buddy. Thanks for this video they are a wonderful fish.❤

I currently have 2 gold and 1 red spot. I rehomed a breeding pair of turquoise. Severums are definitely one of my favorite fish.

Hi Ben, great informative video. I used to breed Green Severums back in the 80s and sold them to lfs for a $1.00 each. I hope you are having a great trip. See you next week.

Hope you're having a great vacation, my trip was not as planned by any means. I got double crossed on many areas more than one. I almost do not want to return to Michigan ever again.

@@BenOchart If you mean my own family. I've disowned them for what they did to my cichlids and on top of it exposed me to the nice wonderful pandemic. So I'm in quarantine in my own home currently thanks to them. Luckily I am currently fine so far. I only had few survivors on the fish stock which were out of my glofish and African Frog. I only have my 60 gallon tank to go back there for and stay elsewhere. luckily I know better people.

I love the spotted cichlid. She is beautiful. How big will she get? Thanks Ben always interesting videos

Around 10”, sometimes larger.

My two red shoulder severum are very shy and spend a lot of time hiding. But they Beautiful fish I’m looking to adding more soon it’s not long been setup. Have a great vacation

Never had any severums when i had sa ca cichlids yrs ago but theyre nice

I have super male red spotted severum and a male red shoulder severum ( I didn’t know it was a red shoulder at the time) I got them together 4 years ago and they were in horrible conditions. I considered this my rehab project. Got them back to 100% in about 4 weeks and they ended up getting beautiful colorations while very young. They are actually very friendly towards each other except when it’s breeding season and they get aggressive with each other but when that happens I separate them for about 1 month and then they are back to normal. Both are not timid, they are usually the first ones to eat and are usually the first ones to greet me every morning. They are my center piece fish and I’m overly obsessed with them. They are now slightly bigger than my hand now.

They sound spectacular!

I picked up a pair from a shop 3hr away, put them in a bucket w a bubbler and did fine. Gold spotted female and turquoise male. Both mature fish, had to separate them tho as the female was always digging a pit and being aggressive toward other tankmates. Now they're peaceful as can be. I've heard the female's fins are not as long and pointed as the male, and that seems to hold true for mine, definite differences there.

I got four severuns. A green, Turquoise, gold and red shoulder. The green is the largest about 3.5 inches he is not aggressive but he he sure let's the others know he is boss! The red shoulder is the smallest and the most shy. Also the slowest grower of the four.

I hear these are very hardy and adjust to various environments. How would they respond to a higher PH and water closer to an African Cichild tank?

Mine are in around 7.2 - 7.5, very hard water with a low KH. I think they would adapt well but I certainly would never but them into a tank with ACs. They would become a nice big round target.
