Angela Bofill (BEST) The Lost TV Interview: Gary Baca TV Exclusive
Музыка
God allowed me to meet and greet many artists like the super sweet Angela Bofill.
To Angie, I just wanna say the "Angela Bofill Experience" at Yoshis Oakland was great!
I met Angie during an interview on my 1991 KPFA Berkeley radio show. She was performing at Kimball's an intimate small night club off of Claremont Ave in the middle of Oakland. I also requested an interview for a small cable access TV show called "New World Music Videos" in San Francisco with studios off of Mission St. She would rather come down to the TV station for the interview than be on the phone. After our first interview, I knew Angie was super cool and we became friends. Needless to say...I am forever grateful to Angie for doing this TV appearance with us.
Angela was born in Brooklyn, New York to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother. She grew up listening to Latin music and was also inspired by African-American performers. Her weekends were taken up studying classical music and singing in a city chorus. It was as a teenager that her professional singing began.
She performed with Ricardo Marrero & the Group and Dance Theater of Harlem chorus before being introduced to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen of the jazz label GRP Records by Dave Valentin, her friend and jazz flutist. Grusin and Rosen signed Bofill and produced her first album, Angie, in 1978. Angie was well received both critically and commercially and included the chart single "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" (co-written by Gwen Guthrie and Haras Fyre), and Bofill's sprawling jazz composition, "Under the Moon and Over the Sky".
Less than a year later, a second album, Angel of the Night was released and outperformed its predecessor. The album included the chart singles "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and the up tempo title track, as well as the song "I Try", written by Bofill and covered by Will Downing in 1991. The reception of these albums positioned Bofill as one of the first Latina singers to find success in the R&B and jazz markets.
Clive Davis, the head of Arista Records, showed interest in Bofill. Arista had a distribution deal with GRP. Bofill switched labels for her next album, Something About You (1981). Produced by Narada Michael Walden, the album was an attempt to move Bofill into mainstream R&B and pop music. It didn't perform as well as previous releases, despite the singles "Holdin' Out for Love" and the title track, which both reached the R&B Top 40.
The following year, she and Walden reunited for Too Tough. The title song reached No. 5 on the R&B chart and spent four weeks at No. 2 on the Dance chart. A follow-up single, "Tonight I Give In", reached the Top 20. Several months later, Bofill released her final collaboration with Walden, Teaser. The album failed to match the success of Too Tough but did produce one Top 20 R&B hit, "I'm On Your Side," which has been covered by several artists, most notably Jennifer Holliday, who had a Top 10 hit with it in 1991. Bofill is recovering from a stroke she had in January 10, 2006
THIS IS 4 U ANGIE!

Rest in Paradise. No more pain. Divine Feminine Angela Bofill
RIP Angela Bofill. My condolences to your family.
⭐⭐⭐Miss Angela Bofill ⭐⭐⭐ May you 🏝 Rest In Paradise 🏝 The Angels are with you. I've been a fan since 1980. I'm playing your catalog all week paying homage to one of our great voices in the last 45 years. You, Dave Valentin and Phyllis Hyman are gonna have a ball in heaven. 🙂
Angela is a stellar singer and songwriter. She deserved way more recognition.
So sorry to hear of the passing of this beautiful angel. I've been a fan since she hit the music scene. Truly had a gift. RIP Angela.
I had a stroke and I'm soooo glad and proud of her that she's singing again. She got her speech back. I love you Angela, girl❤❤❤

She did get it…at the time! Funny we always say that about artists. What do people really want for them? They make decent money literally doing what they love. It’s rare for us common folks. People know her name around the world. That amounts to something!
@racourdav
Ай бұрын
@@thatbemefoolI disagree, she did not ‘get it’ …and when people say that what they (we) mean is she was a much better artist/talent than others who have/ had longevity and were well paid. They had to collect money for her when she had those strokes, because she did not make a load of money like other less talented people. I realize these type of arguments are based on who people choose to support but a LOT of times it’s a marketing decision by record labels to prop/hype up who they feel will be more successful. I honestly think they didn’t know how to market her, should they have focused more on the black community, Latino, public at large? At any rate it’s neither here nor there now…may she rest in peace.

I'm not a bit surprised that Angie is so engaging and so down to earth. My best friend in my head. Rest In Heavenly Peace, Angel Of The Night.💛
You can spot a professional musician when you see one. Angie is one, a great one.
Angela was sooooo beautiful 🥰 And that voice and her songs were so beautiful. ❤
Rest in peace beautiful.....one of my faves growing up
Narada Michael Walden and George Duke were her best producers. I love me some Angie. Her voice/vocals are very recognizable. No one sounds like her. I miss her making record albums. I'm fortunate to have her music catalog (and play it often) including the song she collaborated with the late great Flutist Dave Valentin (Angie's connection on getting a record deal). There were 2 songs Angie and Dave Valentin collaborated with which are "We'll Make Love" (circa 1979) and "Can't Change My Heart" (circa 1986). 💙💙💙💙💙🙏🙏🙏🙏💙💙💙💙💙
Thank you for sharing this video. I love her voice and her music.
Love her and her music. Praying for her beautiful family
Rest beautiful one, you will certainly be missed and we loved you. You made your mark in the world of music, and gave us much food for thought with your soulful , beautiful , very skillful talent.
I can't believe this woman did not become a bigger star in her day. She is my favorite. I saw her in concert many years ago and she blew me away. She is a trained singer who was blessed with phenomenal vocals. Someone like Beyonce becomes so famous and to me she is nothing compared to Angel Bofill.

Love you forever Ms. Angela Bofill. Rest In Paradise
I remember seeing her as a very young child in Chicago. There was this thing called Chicago Fest and she performed at Soldier Field. I had to be under 8. But I remember it as clear as day
I saw her several times at Kimball's East in Emeryville and also at Yoshi's. She was a great live performer and as sweet as she appears in this interview. She was ALWAYS appreciative of her audience.
She was so underrated! A great talent. I heard “I try” in 81-82 on the radio in Miami. 🔥Then I heard “I’m on your side” I was hooked! I saw how they loved her overseas, especially the Philippines. I saw more of her albums over there.
Angela has a special place in my heart. 😊
She is sweet genuine and a pure soul❤
RIP Angela, one of my favorite singers!😥
*Angela Bofill we miss you* Rest in Power 🌹 Redt in Paradise 🌺 Rest in Eternal Peace 🕊️ 🕊️ 🕊️ Angela Bofill was so long ved and always cherished in the Black American Community.🌹 During the early days, her Latin Heritage was not openly expressed inside the Black American Community. Angela Bofill and Phyllis Hyman were close musically and in friendship
Another Angel got her wings! RIP Angela Bofill 🙏🕊💐🕊🙏🎶

I had never heard of Angela either until December 2020. All this beautiful music just melted me into a higher realm. Sometimes I get angry that I have missed out on five decades of her music because the local radio stations never played her music. I'm playing catch-up with these great videos, and music streaming services. Yes!

I enjoyed this interview and was pleasantly surprised when she sad she wrote "I Try" when she was 16 y.o. The interview, at no fault of hers, did get a little bizarre when the topic veered towards condoms, LOL but she handled it with humor. 🙂
