Honestly, if you were a kid stuck in an unfair situation (favoritism, bullying, abuse, not fitting in, etc.), then Angela's revenge fantasies may very well have been cathartic to watch. You might even see yourself in Angela, because you channeled your own frustration in much the same way. People calling the show "mean-spirited and ugly" due to Angela's dreams of taking Nanette down a peg forget that some kids do, in fact, get really, really angry, and their imagination may very well be the first and best safe outlet they have. (That, or they *were* the Nanette and feel attacked. In which case, cry me a river.)

Around the time I noticed hate for this show (that I never saw) getting popular to share, the people who reviewed cartoons tended to have two flaws... One was to nitpick or maximize issues to make their opinion look more valid; the other was a puritan-esque angle where 'mean-spirited' was a literal buzzword-phrase. Anything where characters were caused misfortune or had ill will wished upon them, no matter the circumstances, had big potential to be called 'mean-spirited' by some over-sensitive reviewers who probably forgot how fun a little harmless wish-fulfillment like that could be as a kid. Aside from weebs in general, I'm guessing the non-weeb hate-boner stemmed from there.

It's a little similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Kids like that book so much because it presents the adolescent world in an almost cynical fashion. Adults like to think kids are more innocent than they really are. Of course kids have revenge fantasies where they somehow also become popular in school. Kids can be very envious without realizing it. That being said, I still think Angela Anaconda is very hard to relate to as a kid simply because of the art style, their manner of speech, and comparatively boring premise.

That was certainly my personal experience with the show! While I don’t really think I knew at the time what was going on, looking back through an adult lens, I’m certain the show helped me deal with certain situations and feelings that I couldn’t quite place or put a name to as a child. You know those feelings of frustration at being deemed a social outcast and taking your resentment out on the one who seems to be upholding that social construct because it’s easier to comprehend and be angry at a bully than it is a larger power structure at play. And I know my parents never took my complaints of bullying at school very seriously. Not only was having a show where a little girl was going through something similar as me nice, but her little fantasies were, as you pointed out, cathartic. I do find it interesting, and very telling, that people think Angela’s revenge fantasies are “mean and ugly” and seem to have no critique of Nanette’s bullying, which wasn’t fantasy in the show. And as we all know bullying can have lasting, life-long effects. 🤔

The day after I'm told about how this show possibly destroyed a marriage, I'm shown this video.

@Obsidius Nightbrother Someone posted on 4Chan that this helped ruin a marriage (not that the series itself was the main reason, it was more that it was the straw on the camel's back.) You could probably look up the video on the subject itself, but the post hasnt exactly been verified as it's basically just an internet post that was made during the airing of the show.

@@Drake13000 Basically, the guy who directed "Our War Game", the segment of the digimon movie with Diaboromon, took the basic premis and overall style he used for that movie and expanded it into it's own full length anime film (with all references to digimon removed) called Summer Wars.

This show felt like a fever dream because almost no one ever remembered it except when it involved the Digimon movie. I would usually skip the opening because it was too weird. I liked the intro before Digimon and some of the show as a kid, but overall i barely remember anything about it. It's very uncanny looking. I will admit the style is unique.

My guess is that people retroactively hated it because a few youtubers said so. In reality, people who actually watched it are already quite old (relative to most teenagers and people on their early 20s), and most haters probably were too young and only can vaguely remember the uncanny look of the characters (similar to how I barely remember Bump in the Night, despite my older brother telling me we watched it almost daily).

Yep that theme song reminded me of changing the channel. As much as this video is praising it so much, I still don't like the show. It feels just so lame and unfunny to me, not to mention the voices and characters are pretty annoying

This show is an excellent example of Canadian television: If it's good people won't notice it's Canadian. If it's weird, people will look into it and find out it's Canadian. Thus the idea that Canadian shows are weird is born. Also, I did watch this show on Teletoon as a kid and even then I could not decide if I loved or hated it or wanted to wipe it from my brain and regain my innocence. It didn't help that the intro song was annoying and got stuck in my head all the time.

Don't worry as a Canadian most of our good shows were weird fever dreams but the good kinds of weird fever dreams. Also Canada takes no responsibility for the voice acting in Spiderriders, but we are proud of the genuinely beautiful and alien landscapes and amazing opening that that show features

Totally appreciate you trying to defend Canadian animation, but as a Canadian - there's something in the water. We have too many weird showz

One time when I went camping as a child, the people in the campsite next to us had kids. They had a young daughter that would scream and cry until they put on the Angela Anaconda theme song, which to me was very strange as the show hadn't been on the air in some time. This was also during a time where mp3s weren't as popular, which means one of the parents had to burn the theme song onto a CD-R and keep it with them at all times.

That was a very sweet sentiment at the end. It spoke a lot to me when she said she was greatful to have the opportunity to act like herself rather than be forced into a image expected of her. Honestly this hit the hardest out of all the pride month videos I watched this year.

I really wish I had watched this more as a kid! The chilled-out, down-to-earth tone; the wide vocabulary of the kids, and expressing childlike feelings in mature sentences; the slightly off-the-wall characters like Josephine who lend themselves to some quite edgy satire for a kids' show - it gives me the same feeling that teenage me had when I discovered Daria.

Honestly you'd probably dig Pepper Ann as well if that's the case, for something more traditionally animated and with slightly older (middle school) characters. The writing on P.A. is extremely smart and it has similar vibes to A.A. with different but still equally quirky characters.

So she gave us three great shows with funny, dorky female leads. Those three shows are a huge part of my and my sisters' childhoods.

After looking into it, the show used an outdated software that can no longer be used with modern computers. It was amazing to find that they photographed the model’s lip movements for every potential syllable to animate the characters speaking. It’s too bad the model didn’t like the show afterwards.

I always loved Angela Anaconda and PepperAnn. I loved seeing other types of girls featured. I should have known there was a queer creative force at their core. :) I grew up knowing feeling out of place. I knew I wasn’t interested in boys (or boy crazy) like the usual girl media images depicted. I didn’t have a close group of female friends. I wasn’t interested in fashion or makeup. I later came to understand that I’m queer... that I wasn’t broken for not romantically liking boys or feeling uncomfortable in a dress. Even though they weren’t gay characters, these shows portrayed variety and difference. There are lots of ways to be you, and that’s okay. I’m glad that’s a message I had as a young person through media like this. I will certainly check out the KZread interview - thanks for highlighting that! I haven’t gone through too much of your content yet, so you may have already covered Home Movies. If not, you would probably really like this animated series. :)

I loved Angela Anaconda and had no idea anyone hated it .__. it was one of those kids shows that treated kids as little adults learning about life rather than plain stupid or twee. I also was one of the only non-religious kids in a very religious school growing up, who was treated unfairly by teachers because of this (and the fact I came from a poorer background and very young parents, when most of the kids in my school were wealthy middle-class) I related SO MUCH to Angela.

FINALLY some praise for Angela Anaconda! I ADORED this show growing up but everyone on the internet was always hating on it, and I just couldn't see why!

I actually picked up “on account of” as a kid, on account of this show.

I remember this show fondly, it was aired on the saturday morning, followed by code lyoko and naruto, of all things. Its weird hearing it in english. I once blew off my friends invitation to go play outside, cus I was watching Angela, and it took him like 5 years to stop giving me shit about it. Idc, great show.

I remember as a kid hating this show, and then one day it clicked for me and I loved it. It's super artistic and smart, and the sort of feelings it leaves you with are maybe a bit more complex than a kid can handle. It's a very ironic show where the narrator isn't entirely reliable or infallible.

"I love Bob and hot chocolate" brought back a distant childhood memory I didn't know I had. 😂 I completely forgot about this show but I think I liked it.

Angela Anaconda actually gave me so much serotonin. I saw a clip on tiktok and I had to look up videos about it. I loved how weird she was and this literally unlocked a whole memory.

I only remember it from that 4chan story about a kid whose parents divorced when they watched the Angela Anaconda short for the Digimon movie. Also imagine a reboot that interpreted the grey skins as having the show take on a 1930’s cartoon artstyle.

Yeah, I enjoyed the show when it aired, & never understood where the haters were coming from. Unelss they're just hatin' on Nanette Manoir.

I loved Angela Anaconda as a kid!! I love the contrived way they spoke and the creative style and the underdog cheeky main character and the tomboyishness she implied by hating the posh and the feminine. And the way they always used people's full names 😂 I had no idea people hated this show, it played every afternoon on ABC in Australia

I cannot stress this enough - I loved Angela Anaconda when I was a kid. Absolutely lurrrrrved that show. The art style, the weird character quirks, the almost pointless story-lines... it was like someone took all these crazy, "bad-on-paper" ideas, put them into one show, and somehow made magic. To this day I'm actually kinda shocked when people tell me they don't like it.

I never understood the hate for this show. I used to watch this as a kid and thought it was funny af. It never creeped me out. I even know the intro by heart.

We can emotionally relate to things that are either clearly human or very unclearly human (like simba from the lion king) However there is this weird middle ground where the characters are human but not quite. Cats falls in this category and so does Angela. The face is completely human but the rest of the body is a cartoon.

Colorizing the characters in the intro remake makes in 10x better already.

Angela Anaconda was one of my favourite show growing up and I'm so surprised to hear that people didn't like it. What? Did you guys not have a sense of humour growing up, damn.

I have been in love with this cartoon since its debute on Fox Family. Angela Anaconda's writing is brilliant, hilarious & the art style is so unique & wacky. Watching reuploaded episodes on KZread in recent years has given me a new appreciation for it.

Petition for Billiam to stop smiling into the camera bc I'm starting to find him attractive and I don't wanna accept that.

I totally never thought of Angela Anaconda outside of that one Digimon short but now I'm totally regretting it. Joanna Ferrone seems like such a cool person, I think I'd really like to check it out now.

I didn't either but I found a youtube collection of every Angela Anaconda episode & watched them. Loved it!

I remember reading the book versions of some of these episodes in elementary school, and I loved them. The show worked surprisingly worked in a book format!

I can certainly say, having this as my favorite show growing up influenced me greatly. I did always get picked on for being myself and certainly wasn't afraid to be exceptionally strange. It also influenced my vocabulary quite a lot but this show really was and still is important to me.

i loved this show. i"ll never forget accidentally recording over one of my dad's episodes of star trek with this show. it's fine, i hid the tape.

My name is Angela - this show first aired when I was in elementary school, imagine how many times I got called Angela Anaconda 🙃. I never watched a single episode because I was so annoyed by it 😂

What a nostalgia hit! I loved this show! I even had the book "Families and How to Survive Them". My favourite episode was the one where Angela was getting teased for not wearing the right colour but then it turned out that she was wearing a reversible jacket. Anyone else remember that one?

Finally a positive review about this show!!! I WAS OBSESSED WITH IT AS A KID... I have a very blurry memory of it but your video made me want to re-watch it as an adult!!!

Honestly, this show gives me big "Making Fiends" energy, which was another show that came later. Haven't verified, but it definitely sounds like there's a large overlap of voice talent here. If there's not, the general direction definitely took some ques I think.

So apparently that show was made by one of the episode directors of Bojack Horseman.

Bro, I felt like I was the only human on this planet that LOVED this show. As a kid my siblings and I just adored it, and we couldn't help but lose it over Angela's fantasies about her nemesis. Rewatching it again, it's just all the funnier, and I can even appreciate how hilariously odd it just is. Also, as someone who also went to a catholic school, that Catholic girl hit home in a way it shouldn't have.

10:47 "Well some of the slapstick is great, particularly listening to Nanette Manoire yell in pain." I know I shouldn't like her yells, but god dammit the VA is doing an amazing job there.

Fantastic video. While I won’t say you have convinced me to go and watch this much-maligned series (just not the type of show to interest me), I definitely feel like I’ve gained a better appreciation and understanding of the show and its direction. You very clearly do get what the show wanted to do, and express it very well. Again, I won’t say I’ve been converted to a fan of Angela Anaconda by this video, but I love these kind of positive unpopular opinion pieces. We need more shit like this.

I will never forget Angela Anaconda on account of that being impossible. I loved it too much.

Angela anaconda was one of my favourite shows as a kid, it’s so well written.

I loved this show as a kid. I actually had a teacher who compared me to Angela in looks and imagination and that stuck with me forever.

THIS I have always loved this show and no one ever took me seriously...

Haha amazing! I'm currently working on Joanna Ferrone's short documentary about her creating this show, with Sue Rose; I found out that they also created 7-Up mascot Fido Dido, too!

That short segment you showed of Ferrone, thank you for that. Billiam, you're a really good guy. Thank you for showing more fo Anegal Anaconda, I'm from Europe so I think I never saw this but it was really good to know it, showcased by you!

The only thing I hate about this show is that the theme song still gets stuck in my head all these years later. Seriously, I was really surprised to find out as an adult that people hated Angela Anaconda! I remember being really into the weird and unique animation style as a kid, and I watched a lot of it. Thanks for covering it!

Probably Mr Enter, who did an Animated Atrocity on it , talked about an episode and didn’t really offer any good criticism of the show and just rehashed it’s ugly and acted like there was nothing good and the show was utter trash. Mr enter is a truly toxic content creator and his fans just take whatever he’s saying as fact even though he can’t do a proper review on anything and just says what everyone else says without personal opinion

I loved the show as a kid and my friends thought it was funny.

Finally, some one who actually gave the show a fair chance! used to like the show a lot when I was a kid, could really relate to Angela's character

When i was like 5 i thought this was canon in digimon

I love this show. Angela felt like a genderswapped version of myself. I learned English more by reading and watching movies rather than conversing with people, and I got made fun of for that when I immigrated. Angela spoke that way! And she looked like me too! I love the sense of humor. One of the smallest dissapointments in my adult life is that my wife dislikes the character. I am both a digimon and Angela anaconda fan and I have to say that short in the digimon movie is an affront to both cartoons and I do not blame anyone for getting the wrong impression.
