I think a really interesting game would be two playoff teams where no one swings & the only thing that happens are like 75 mph fastballs that always are in the zone so it turns into like 20 innings of a slog of baseball. & the fans have to be in on it that would be insane
I'm convinced Angel Hernandez is calling ridiculous pitches because eventually someone is gonna deck him. Then he can finally win a lawsuit against MLB.
Best call Angel Hernandez will ever make, is when he says: "I'm retiring from umpiring!"
EVERY MLB Umpire should be required to attend post game press conferences to answer questions just like the players are.

Angel Hernandez is a clown. I'm a former amateur sports official who amassed over 3,000 games officiated in 3 different sports, 90% of which were in baseball and fastpitch softball. Angel Hernandez is the poster child for robot umps. Not a single one of the umpires I know have any respect for that fool.

Funny enough it’s actually a correct call based on all the data. The strike call that is anyway. The pitch itself should’ve been a quick pitch.
#1 electronic strike zone #2 umpires should be promoted and demoted to and from the minors for good/poor performance. You may not be able to fire Angel, but what if you could send him down to AA?
Allowing incompetence to have positions if influence and power is destroying quality. In all works of life.
Angel is the one person who United every baseball fan
In Korea (kbo) umps that don't perform well and miss a lot of calls get sent to the minors

There’s a difference. Joe West is just stubborn. When MLB changed the strike one in the 2000s, Joe West never adapted. If you watch his strike zone, it’s reminiscent of the old strike-zone. Angel Hernandez is just straight up awful whether it was pre or post the most recent strike zone change.
@2011blueman

Joe West retired and he actually wasn't terrible, he just had a massive ego and frequently made the games about him and his ego trips.
The flow on this show is spotty
8:05 to answer your question, yes, it is against the rules .... Rule 5.07(a) Comment: Pitchers may disengage the rubber after taking their signs but may not step quickly onto the rubber and pitch. This may be judged as a quick pitch by the umpire. When the pitcher disengages the rubber, he must drop his hands to his sides...if the bases are unoccupied it should be treated as an illegal pitch
Imagine how long the games will be when ball and strike challenges are allowed and Angel is behind the dish. 4hrs + easy.

one of the last years of Manfred's term it is getting mplemented. I heard 2025 at earliest but it'll probably be later.
I met an umpire at his home in carlsbad during last years playoffs between the astros and rangers final playoff game. It was considered one of the worst officiated games. I never knew these.umpires were untouchable
careful now, don't let Angel see this and call you racist.
I hear you man, I really do. Angel pisses me off most days that I can catch a couple games. BUT baseball is an old-school sport that historically has real-time calls on the play. Truely it's a monumental point of the sport. At 6:18 you said a statistic about missed calls (you said six missed calls a week but it really doesn't matter for the point I'm making). This game is coming into a new school era; requires more "small" rules, stipulations that have to rely on technology and iPads for the teams to nit-pick every small minute detail to make a decision on a challenge. Baseball, right now, is in purgatory as for which ways calls should be handled. MLB needs to make a decision. Do they want in-time decisions entrusted by with umpires or cameras able to track slow-motion, multiple angels and find true decisions on the time of the player and fans? I could go on and on, but MLB needs to make a decision. Angel is a shit-bird but I can't blame him on every missed call like most people would consider.
The beauty of statistics is, he cannot claim discrimination! I hope that behind the scenes, MLB's On-Field Operations team AND his own union are going at him with performance statistics and working to get him back on track. If they document the hell out of that process, and he doesn't improve, then when it comes to fire him, the MLB should have a rock-solid case for terminating him due to poor job performance. Unions are there to fight for better pay and working conditions; they should not be there to defend the incompetent.
it should have been called an illegal pitch... he needs to pause after re-engaging... no runners, no balk - Illegal Pitch... unless it's angel..
I umpire LL and some higher and I gotta say there’s absolutely no question I’d work a better game at the plate than Angel
MLB loves Angel. He generates so much interaction on social media that he alone markets baseball more than most people in the marketing department at MLB.
Check out the Wyatt Langford strikeout, which happened after this video.
At this point, is it really incompetance? Can anybody be this bad by accident? Serious question.
All I'm going to say is, you CANNOT defend unions and then complain about people like Angel Hernandez not getting fired. Without a union protecting him, Henandez would have been gone YEARS ago.
@Howesitgoing1

Some unions are really good, and some unions are really bad. Some are good at getting what they want, and some are really bad. The umpire union is really good at getting what they want while the NFLPA is terrible at getting what they want.

Awful "weekend" ?! he's been this bad for over 30 years !!! that's one long weekend
Angel should have to ask permission from New York before he ejects someone.
The Umpire's Union prevents MLB from firing Angel Hernandez.
If I was a player. I would add into my contract the ability to not play if he is anywhere near the field.
Boeing Quality Control employees have better eyes than Angel Hernandez.
If I can’t do my job I would be canned…this dude changes history because of mlbS milk-toast approach.
Why can't umps have accountability , I'm a welder , I have to test every six months and if I have 3 repairs in between test , I am fired .
33 years is one hell of a long weekend
The fact that these umps are untouchable makes me believe that there is something more going on that meets the eye. They must have dirt on MLBs integrity because otherwise there would be no way they could have this kind of immunity for being so bad.
Its been a few years since I've paid any attention to baseball. Omg i would have guessed Angel Hernandez was fired a long time ago!!😂
This weekend i saw one of the badest crew too...in Chicago vs LA
It's 1. Quick pitch and 2. Clock violation.
It is strange the MLB won’t do anything about it. Angel has sued the MLB before, maybe they are afraid he will do it again.
Rob Manfred is actively destroying Major and Minor League Baseball and all you can do is another hit piece on Angel Hernandez? Direct some of that energy towards the singular man who truly deseves it. Edit: I doubt the owners wanedt to lose billions ($,000,000,000) in revenues due 100% exclusively (NOT an exaggeration) to Commissioner Rob Manfred.

I don't even get mad at it anymore. It's been going on for so long, it's ridiculous. It's like, you have a few Angel games every year and anything can happen.
Players should protest and not play the games he calls until he resigns or MLB fires him.
Loving the dead air in the beginning
It’s time to start asking if Angel Hernandez is betting on baseball. Is he playing the numbers on the innings line?
I have actually stopped watching games and just check out highlights now because of all the terrible calls, too aggravating to watch anymore. the umpires are the story instead of the actual games.
Angel Hernandez is a reason to not unionize

Agree. Again not trolling just trying to add to the convo.
This may sound stupid. But I think there should be a technology where there is a invisible strike zone that only the umpire can see through a special pair of glasses. Just like what we see when we watch a broadcast of a game. This way, the umpire would not have to rely on some sort of special Technology that is feeding them the strike zone if they were to use that device. With the way AI is now and holograms or whatever. I'm sure there could be a company that can develop some sort of imagery that is placed in the batters box that is "laser" based. And again this strike zone is only visible through a special pair of glasses that the umpire wears.
The ump issue started after the mlb effed up the first ump strike. This is ridiculous
I would like to see players be able to challenge called 4th ball and 3rd strike. Why do these players train so hard to hit their spots if the ump is gunna punish them for being precise. Takes 2 seconds to relay that call. Not quite taking the umps out but takes it out of their hands and into the players on crucial calls.
Get rid of the sob
Angel and Jerry Crowford and John Mcsherry were my fav umps in MLB
MLB should put Hernandez out to pasture and replace him with an ump from Triple-A.
@ScottyBraun-FoulTerritory

10 years ago yes
The MLS just ended their referee strike and it wasn’t great when replacements were there . I would be really interested to see MLB umpires go on strike and see what garbage they would bring up to replace them. I don’t like how many games has he screwed teams over? Hast to come to a point where Teeman say they don’t want him umpiring because they’re going to lose the chance to go to the playoffs
The analogy of teacher tenure is correct, you just used it wrong. Umpires are protected regardless of performance-- just like teachers. Watch where the umpires line up. They often lineup behind the catcher when the catcher is positioned to an extreme side of the plate. When they do that it creates an optical illusion and they miss calls on the opposite side of the plate. They need to stand dead center over the plate regardless of wear the catcher moves-- but they don't want to get hit. Bring back the external chest protector.
Detroit at Mets this season. Angel too.
I am not upset about the location of the ball for the called strike 3 I am more upset of the quick pitch. I mean it’s not like he swung at strike 3 catcher caught it, but the batter ran down to first base safe 😄.
Not sure that any rule was broken if the ump did not call for a reset. The 1st base / 3rd base umps had a better view and they did nothing. That said, Angel is inept.
I thought he has to look at the batter before he pitches per the new rule.
As a home plate umpire that is tough to see. The field umpires have a better view and should have chimed in. It’s an illegal pitch what you are describing
How does this guy still have a job? Because he’ll sue (and lose) again?
He gets almost every call wrong, do think robots would take care of that
Fans should boycott all games that Angel is scheduled behind the plate. For what it costs to go to a Jays game nowadays, we gotta do better than Angel.💰
