Continuity buzzer is actually pretty quick, it's just a shitty probes I noticed causes it to be slow.

Youre absolutely right, I have two other versions of this meter and really like them a lot, theyre a great value for the feature set, and after cleaning the probe ends with alcohol and fine steel wool they are very fast and clean sounding on continuity response. Its as if theres a left over plating film from the manufacturing process or something. These are great little meters with a nice chipset in them, best and first upgrade should be a higher quality set of gold plated leads for the best possible result, they may cost as much as the meter itself but you will have an excellent combination. The higher quality lead sets offer less resistance, better accuracy/stability and faster response. I have the 8008 and think I will get this 8009 for the added features, NCV for one. For those complaining about the lack of high voltage protection, these are value priced meters and you just dont get that level of protection in this price range, mainly for low voltages though ive used mine on mains with no issues. If youre a pro and need high level protection then spend $100 (or much more) on a fluke or other professional brand because you need it. UPDATE 4-10 -- regarding the continuity and lead question, last nite I received a brand new set of Probemaster gold plated leads and they transformed this meter quite nicely, the continuity test is solid clean and loud, the resistance is noticeably way down on resistance, and in general they make the meter shine much better than with the leads it came with. This meter and a set of Probemaster leads makes an EXcellent combination, both are well worth the money-!

Yes it says so in the manual: the frequency mode in the voltage setting is for high voltage low frequency measurements and the frequency setting on the rotary dial is for low voltage high frequency measurements. Even for a cheap/simple multimeter like this it's advisory to first read the user manual before using the device 👍 For the money this is a nice and very complete meter. Ideal as portable device in a toolbox/hobbybox or so. For bench use a bigger meter is better as it sits more stable on the bench.

John, thanks for reviewing the 8009 model of the Aneng meter. I have the predecessor to that, model 8008. I see they added the NCV function. The specs appear to be the same, 9999 count. I like my little Aneng 8008 meter, it's fine for a hobbyist like myself with very good accuracy. It's a smaller size than the average meter, but the screen size is larger than most.

Hey John, I bought an Aneng AN8009 from Banggood using the link in your description, based on your review. I've never used Banggood before, so I was very pleasantly surprised to receive it in about a week (to the UK), and they also sent another multimeter for free (an Austool MT833) in a protective zipped case which is useful as a spare with good probes too. I've found the Aneng AN8009 very good so far. I've quietened the piezo buzzer by stuffing the piezo with BluTak ('Tak-It' in US?) which makes using the meter a joy. The forward voltage of the diode setting is better (or more useful) than my other meters as it reads to higher voltages (useful for LEDs with included series diodes). *Tip:* Hold down the SEL/HOLD button as you turn it on until you hear five beeps to keep it from power save power-off.

Thanks for the help! They sent me the Mustool meter as well. I swapped its leads with the Aneng as I was starting to get flaky readings with them. The Mustool leads are better. The lead kit that comes with the Aneng is pretty nice though. I grab the Aneng for measurements first now.

That was a good tip you mentioned, Trystan. The tip works even on a different Chinese meter. Never found it on the manual.

As usual, an insightful review. Looking forward to reviews of some of the amplifiers that you might receive from Banggood. Perhaps you might review a hobbyist-level clamp meter too.

I have 2x AN8008 models and I am very happy with them for my low voltage lab work. Will not use these on main voltages tho. Just not safe enough for that kind of high voltage (above 50V). The LCD is so bright and clear. Amazing for the price. Checked the DC voltage accuracy with a precision voltage reference. 5.000V from the voltage reference, reads 5.000V !

Nice!! Just got one myself. Another thing is the wire leads are nice soft silicon rubber.

I updated my previous review, I now have a set of Probmaster 8017S gold plated leads and they have really made this meter shine. Impeccable continuity performance with instant response, solid tone and readings lock in even quicker. I was dubious if the Probemaster leads were worth the money but they certainly were and paired with this meter they are an excellent combination and both the meter and the leads are well worth the money. If you want this meter and similar ones like it to show their best get the Probemasters, you wont regret it I havent.

I have an 8008 and two 8009's and all have been great little meters for the money. One of the biggest improvements you MUST make is to toss the stock leads and replace them with probemasters or something else of better quality. Granted the leads cost almost as much as the meter, but my continuity performance improved greatly with the probemasters and it now responds very fast and clear, resistance when leads shorted in ohms is lower as well. After going through a slew of cheap meters and sending them back for one QC reason or another These little Aneg 8008/8009 series meters have all been keepers for me. But as always dont mistake these for high end meters in that they just dont have the high voltage input protection for large current etc. - but for average lower voltage hobby and around the home use these are excellent value for the money. The stand on these does suck so I rigged up a great desk stand for mine using a cheap adjustable phone stand and a dashboard clamp for iphones, works like a champ and fits most any small to medium meter.

There's a way to fix the stock leads.

I know it would wreck it but I'd have liked to have seen the leads stripped and the conductor tested in them. See if it is that copper plated aluminum crap. You talked about using the leads with your power supply so you might find out the current handling capacity of the leads?

For most applications, a cheap meter works just fine. Expensive ones may be slightly more accurate, but usually that level of accuracy isnt really needed. Even cheap DMM's are much more accurate than the VTVM's many of us used at one time.

Would you recommend this aneng an8009 ?

What is the minimum uA resolution in the AN8009, is it possible to measure 1uA? If not, do you know a cheap multimeter to measure 1uA? Thank you.

11:10 I think the Aneng AN8009 has problems detecting Frequency when the voltage drops under a certain level, and if it does it read only garbage... (It's the same with my Aneng AN8008)

Thanks to a review on the eevblog i bought the an8008 meter. Its a nice small and cheap thing. I like it. Instead of ncv it has a simple singal generator.

Yes, I have that one too. These meters are an excellent value. They even stood up to Joe Smith pretty well (See his channel). Sold under many name brands and many variants so make sure the features match up when comparing. Zotec appears to be the actual Mfg., at least on their site they show them being made.

I like these type of reviews. See if you can get them to send you one of those mini scopes

It doesn't have an hfe mode.

I have the aneng with the buttons and it's great for my use repairing things however the auto power off and slow continuety is kinda annoying - otherwise it's great

A quick word of caution.Those low cost meters are perfectly fine for measuring low voltage circuits, that are battery powered or from a UL Class 2 power source.But they are kind of iffy for measuring line voltage (120 or 240), they don't have adequate insulation or proper fusing for hard-core electrical work. A lot of the cost in the higher end meters goes into safety features for high voltage use.

I would agree that in my world (industrial motor systems electrical engineer 40+ years) 240v would be considered "low voltage", but to the average hobbyist 120 or greater is "high voltage". In my world high voltage is anything over 2300 volts, low voltage is 600v or less, medium voltage is anything in between.

Electrical potentials of certain levels are an inherent risk that cheap multimeters do not in and of themselves increase. Which is to say a cheap meter in those circumstances is the least of your worries. This is due in no small part to the world having gotten rather adept at producing meters cheaply in the past 40 years. Whether you've noticed it, or not.

Someone tested this meter for the insulation - CAT ratings. On the video here on KZread he did not see any problems. This meter also has two fuses. I have this AN8009 and I am very happy with it. You even can meassure electric fields and the frequency from meters away :-) More a funny thing I know. Just switch it to V and here then with select to Hz and hold the metal of one probe with your fingers.

Please see my comment above. I've been working professionally with 480 and 600 volt high current industrial power systems for over 40 years, and I'm still alive to talk about it. All of my meters are UL/CSA/VDE listed as cat 3 DC(1000V), Cat 4 AC(600VRMS), And they have Class CC current limiting fuses as overcurrent protection (the fuses John showed in the meter are 32Volt fuses at best and my not have any safety agency listing at all). The only valid safety ratings are issued by internationally recognized testing laboratories, all others are simply speculation and opinion, and not a valid confirmation of safety. I stand by my original comment to avoid using these low end meters on any sort of line voltage power system (even 120V wall power).

Just wandering....does all these meters able to check LEDs...I mean able to lite LED by using these digital meters... Normally an analog meter(ohms X1 & X10 range) certainly can lite LEDs.

It is lighting up LEDs on diode test mode.

In the diode check function it will light an LED dimly and show the forward voltage. I got 2.7v with a white LED.

I think you are not getting the 10Mhz frequency reading because you are not on the Frequency Range (ie HZ %). If it is similar to other meters I have then the frequency measurement on the Voltage Range is limited to the frequency response of the AC Voltage measurement circuitry. Great videos BTW - Keep them coming.

You are correct. It does mention this in the manual. I retested in the Hz setting and was getting good readings out past 20MHz.

does the back light stay on constant or just a short time?

It runs for about a minute.

There's a way to improve the intermittent response.

I got this meter last year, just contuinity buzz itself sometime.. other function is fine.

The meter works good, but you need to clean your probes or get better ones. Try rubbing the tips with the abrasive part of a dish spoonge.

This thing is much more better than my fluke DVM. Higher accuracy due to 9999 count.

I had two of these crappy ANENG AN8009 and they both died within 4 to 6 months and it was impossible to get a replacement from where (CHINESE seller)I bought them on eBay.I just bought a replacement ANENG M118A and hopefully this one will last longer.

Can this multimeter measure transistor HFE?

In the manual it says: " Do not input voltage exceeds 36V DC or 25V AC when you are at the setting of measuring current" What's that really means? I cannot measure, lets say for example, how much current a 100w 220v bulb light draws ? ( I know I don't need the multimeter for that, it's an easy convenient formula to calculate it). Or it is just a safety precaution to not accidentally measure voltages above that range while the multimeter dial is set on "A", "mA" and ruin the multimeter?

I would guess that they are being "extra safe" by warning the user from attempting to use the meter on high voltage high energy circuits (such as mains power) that could cause an arc flash indecent if they accidentally connected the meter across the line when they meant to test the current.

I like your channel you do a good job on most topics, although I disagree with you on this one. This meter, like most cheap meters, is dangerous and is by no way cat iii rated. What happens with newbies and inexperienced hobbyist and even some every experienced professions is that they will connected the meter to mains with the leads in current mode. This can blow the ass out of the meter along with your hand. There was no blast protection or isolation slots on that board, there are plenty of meters on the market in the sub $50.00 price point that are safe. Even if you balk at the safety concerns the other issues with these meters is that they just don't last, all it takes is one fall from the desk,I must have owned at least 10 cheap meters over the years until I bought myself a Fluke and I have not regretted it one bit (it takes a beating and just keeps going). Anyways great job, and thanks for sharing.

Plus even when meters do blow up it is not that big of a bang. Don't you watch joe's videos? He blows up meters all the time. I've tested mains voltage with freebie meters and they've never blown up on me. Maybe you just don't know what it takes for electricity to cause an explosion? I'll give you a hint, high impedance devices are not the best candidates for that hazard.

Thanks for the link. The meter I have locks in on the voltage pretty quick. The 8009 seems to be a newer version and perhaps doen't suffer from the slow measurement lock issue. High voltage, low current is okay but I would not use it on high energy HV such as a mains supply.

Actually I have both 8008 and 8009, and they both have the same board layout in that part which Jack Zimmermann has modified. I did the modification on both and it does make a difference :)
