It’s also a commentary on toxic masculinity, as the heart of the bully is one of insecurity, so when Jimbo and Nelson break out the mold, it’s a refreshing take: “He’s graceful, yet masculine, so it’s okay for me to enjoy this! - Jimbo “Huckleberries are the best.” Skinner walks by: “So anyway I kicked the guy’s ass!” Skinner walks away “So anyway, if the berries are too tart, I just dust them with confectioner’s sugar! I bet they still have a thing for each other. Lisa is probably one of the only people Nelson genuinely respects and we know he cares about her.

One of my favourite Nelson moments. I don't like how later seasons totally removed his bully personality except for the occasional teasing and 'Ha ha!' moments, and his family turning back to normal. The most interesting Nelson episodes were the ones that showed his softer side whilst still exploring where bullying behaviour comes from in a mature way. And moments like this are just adorable. The kid has a heart of gold, really. He's just from a broken family and vents it in the only way he knows how, a lot like many real bullies.

the best part was the whole "Story" all the boys had to taking the road trip and then it cuts to Nelson just straight up leaving his home, dark comedy at its finest.

For those who aren’t aware, the joke is that Look Magazine ceased publication in 1971. (It’s also yet another Stanley Kubrick reference. Sort of. Kubrick started out as a photographer for Look.)

Nelson's talked about huckleberry picking in a couple of later episodes. When the boys were in Branson, Missouri in season seven Nelson wanted to see Andy Williams and was excited to hear Moon River. This song contains a line involving two friends picking huckleberries in their youth. Probably unintended on the writer's part and was supposed to be an Out of Character moment, but the whole thing is made funnier and explains why Nelson likes the song so much.

The line isn't about picking huckleberries, it's a reference to Huckleberry Finn from the Mark Twain novel. "Huckleberry friend" implies adventure, trotting new ground, seeing the world, etc.

But then in the later episode “Simpsons Tall Tales,” Nelson is Huckleberry Finn in the Tom Sawyer segment. That might be related.

I’ve only recently heard of this thing and by god, whenever that kid goes “ANDY WILLAMS” I lose it. He’s just so damn happy, it’s adorable.

Best Nelson moment on the show

This is one of my favorite episodes if not my all time favorite. So much happens in such a short time yet everyone gets to do something (minus Marge,) it's a load of fun. This is one of the suprsingly hilarious bits.. Nelson's more than a bully here he's fleshed out. If they had made a Simpsons movie or two in the 90's instead of 2007 this woulda been the perfect plot for it. Bart and the crew could spend at least 45 min maybe half of it driving around and getting into mischief across the country.. then you have Lisa and Homer's arc. Then they screw up and it's up to Lisa and Homer to save them.

The Kamp Krusty episode was supposed to initially be the Simpsons movie. Problem was the writers were barely able to come up with a storyline to fill the typical 20+ minute episode for it, let alone a full length featured film though.

I'm with Nelson on this one. Andy Williams did some great Christmas song covers.

I can imagine Nelson telling the 3 of them that he'll beat the crap out of them if they ever mention he likes Andy Willams to anyone

I don't think he cares.

I remember when this first time this episode aired and when the part came up of Millhouse, and Martin sleeping and Bart almost sleeping....but not Nelson. We all were crying laughing!

This segment went through my head at least 50 times when my girlfriend and I spent all day driving to see Andy Williams in Branson in 2007. I knew Nelson would not steer me wrong. I bought like six Andy Williams albums in the year or three after that show.

I can't see anything Andy Williams and not think of this.

Let Nelson have this. He deserves to have some fun.

Word has it the lyrics are what got Nelson into huckleberries.

This is the oddly wholesome brilliance of golden age Simpsons writing. Everyone is set up in a mean spirited tone, and yet it makes the little happy moments feel all the more real.

the look magazine quote is classic simpsons subtlety.

I didn't know Nelson was a huge fan of Andy Williams until I first saw this.

This was one of my all time favourite episodes. The four boys going on a random adventure getting ice cream, picking up hitchhikers and buying wigs. They joked about going to Disney World or Knoxville. At the time a Disney crossover was unimaginable

I visited Branson last year. Having lived in Vegas for several years, I was completely fine with the fact that it indeed feels like a "Vegas if it were run by Ned Flanders."

It’s the weird left turns that made these characters so memorable in the early seasons.

I had Nelson’s same passionate reaction while I watched Ghostbusters Afterlife at the theater. It was my return to going to a movie during the pandemic

I was just vacationing in Branson last week.

I'm from St. Louis, but my dad's side of the family is from the same county as Branson, so this joke has always stuck with me.

This was a great episode. So many funny moments, they just come one after the other. xD

I'm guessing with Nelson and Andy Williams it's like the head Fanilow in the Barry Manilow episode of 'Will and Grace': "He makes you feel like he knows you. Like every weird or crappy feeling you've ever had, it's all ok with him. It's impossible to feel sad when you listen to him."

This is pretty much me and my friends, whenever i say how much i love Phil Collins. :P
