I’ve said it before, the more I learn about him, the more I have come to believe that the real Andy Griffith was much more like the character he played in A Face in the Crowd, Lonesome Rhodes than he was like lovable Sheriff Andy Taylor.

Sometimes wall punchers are just plain mean and dispicable creatures but in Andy's case I believe that it was from past frustrations in life and his upbringing. Andy was pretty proud of the folksy popularity of the show even though there were times when he wanted to move on and do other things in his career. The show kept coming back to him as a blessing and a gift.

I read Andy and wife Barbara were in an unhappy marriage living together in an unhappy home and they were constantly bickering plus the wife was an alcoholic who was in AA at one point. During one of their altercations when both had been drinking Andy punched a wall at home. In the book "ANDY AND DON" it mentioned the wife's nephew said she was a heavy drinker. I also heard on one channel that Andy said at one point in life he was so unhappy that he thought he needed a psychiatrist but him and wife eventually separated and after they went their separate ways he was happier than he had been in a long time. I am sure living under unpleasant conditions daily can cause anyone to always appear to have anger issues. I think it was good Andy only chose to punch the wall.

I have a theory that Andy in the 60s was a fusion of Andy Taylor and the person he played in A Face in the Crowd, almost like he had a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on (but don’t we all?). He did other things that were very unlike Andy Taylor that I won’t go into. By the 80s, he seemed to have mellowed considerably. I know a woman, now deceased, who was a nurse in the town where Andy lived in his twilight years, who worked in a hospital where Griffith was treated. She said he was incredibly difficult, almost as if old age made him revert to his earlier ways.

Sometimes a therapist can add more stress to issues in an unhappy marriage. Many times we marry too young or marry the wrong person. If the marriage is unhappy it may be better to just move on and hope to find happiness elsewhere. Imagine working all day to better yourself and then going home to an unhappy home where there is constant bickering. Been there, done that, but now happily divorced and plan to stay this way.

I had either read or saw a video some time ago that the broken hand happened because Griffith was so distraught and angry over JFK being assassinated. I remember that it said he was a lifelong Democrat and a huge supporter/endorser of Kennedy. I cannot vouch for the veracity of the claim, but I believe the timeline possibly adds up (late ‘62) depending on the production date of the episode where he appeared with the injured hand(?).
