Thought this guy was just plain stupid when I was younger. Now at 57 I realize he's a comedy genius. His stuff with Lawler, and wrestling women, and stuff like this on lettermen puts him in a different league with most comedians. He was special.

I don't consider him a comedian. He's kind of like Lenny Bruce, but not really. He's more of a performance artist---doing things to get a reaction, positive and negative. One other "comedian,"--and I use the term lightly--that's like Kaufman, is Eric Andre. He does things to get a reaction/response, from what I've seen is usually negative...

Andy was the OG troll before the internet...breaking the 4th wall before Reality TV existed. Even if you found him "not funny," you must admit he was ahead of his time in many ways. Not to mention an absolute master of staying in character when any mere mortal would've busted up laughing.

  • @slugcult-10_years_and

Not only the fourth wall. He dreamt up walls that nobody else could see or even knew about. And then break them all. I'll always remember during one of his appearances doing stand up, he went up onstage and did his laundry. He had a machine with him. Who the hell does that? And not only get away with it, but to get actual roaring laughter. Way ahead of his time.

All through 1983 he was carrying Kleenex boxes onstage on various talk shows (Tom Cottle, Letterman). One journalist thinks he knew he was sick as early as April 1983 & was "fasting" to try & beat what he thought was the flu. themorningnews.org/article/wrestling-with-andy-kaufman?fbclid=IwAR3dCzheDLOkrG_sCoAf1uo1pfOEfOs8T2yPc7bmTss7E4K0sxpfHQ87yOc I don't think lung cancer works that way though. I think it was either HIV slowly degrading his immune system, eventually leading to pneumocystis pneumonia & the cough OR a faked death with the weight loss brought about by starvation/fasting. He seemed to know too early that something was awry, so it was either a "bit" he was doing or he was truly growing unwell over time. Because he was such a health nut he wouldn't have neglected his health by ignoring persistent symptoms. There was no HIV test in those days & he wasn't an (out) gay man so nobody would've thought to check for that.

Seem to remember that the reason Kaufmann was removed from the show was because there was some FCC regulation about blatantly asking for money for yourself on TV. I think it stemmed from Bozo The Clown (or some popular TV clown) going on air a little tipsy and told children that they should go to their parents' wallets and purses and "send the pretty green pieces of paper to ". Then again it was probably all a big prank by Andy & Dave.
