It's absolutely amazing to see Andy play! Some people may think he is emotionless because he doesn't do to much of those weird faces guitar players use to make, but believe me, if you were to play something like this masterpiece, you would be so concentrated that those faces would be almost impossible to make! However... if we look closely, Andy does something pretty astonishing. By looking at him during the entire video instead of the guitar you'll be able to see his jaw muscle tightening with the music. Even his headbang is expressive... This tells me that the guitar player is, not only aware of what he's doing but that he is completely conscious of the song, what is being played and what comes next. This guy is phenomenal!

I totally agree with the G3 tour having AJ on it. His style surpasses Steve and Joe though. Kind of like when Guthrie joined them. It was phenomenal how Steve and Joe had total command of the instrument, then Guthrie comes out and it's like God came to play. At 45yo, it's amazing to me to see how players have progressed, as well as how standards of main stream music have turned to crap.

He is using many effects to create the tone. Drive Pedal, Compression Pedal, Delay Pedal, Reverb, Maybe using very very minimal Chorus aswell, but not enough for us to hear, just enough to effect the EQ. You might want to check out what amp/Pick-ups he is using as that effects the tone aswell. Pedals can be expensive so I use a Line 6 POD 2.0 & Boss GT-8 multi effects processors. I can get most tones by using one or the other. I use an Ibanez PGM for most of my metal stuff. & I use a Fender strat for a more lighter tone. I have put in custom pickups for both guitars to give me better sustain. nothing worse than stock-pickups struggling.

+XDX "i know personal 3 guitarist who are better than any famous guitar player" I actually lol'd. I want whatever you are smoking, my friend, 'cause that statement is just plain retarded. I highly doubt that any of your "personal 3 guitarist " could outplay even someone like Stevie Ray. This is the internet; proof or it did not happen, champ. "to write a song dont make you the best guitar player" so you can actually be the "best guitar player" without writing a single song? Are you even reading what you are posting? How can you be the best when your fanbase is the local Guitar Center or a small group of friends. The best to YOU, maybe, and that would be fair to say. But to just say "best" is moronic. No one single player is the absolute "best". And you should probably listen to LTE before you shit on Petrucci. If you were truly familiar with him, you wouldn't be saying he is a rookie compared to Andy James. Two different playing styles and genres of music. You wouldn't compare Alvin Lee to Johnny Winter. Really you just sound like a jealous, casual guitar player who bought a $700 guitar 15 years ago and never learned past Smoke on the Water chord progressions.

I play the same way. My dad use to say I had alien hands and fingers. lol My ring ringer stretches like 5 frets with no problem plus its much stronger leading to cleaner note when used. But not all licks allow you to not use your pinkie.

from what i have heard from one of his DVD tutorial video, having blues his primary influence in which the left hand is slanted towards the body and basically where the pinky is rarely used since that finger is actually where the slider is placed, allowed him to play in that particular manner.

I've done a few shows with Andy's old band Sacred Mother Tongue, and Andy is genuinely a really nice down the earth guy. Very humble in what he does, and is, you know, half decent at guitar too......

shredding can be soulful and melodic aswell, it can be even more melodic actualy (because there are more notes, more melodies obviously) in the hands of any talented shredder

You want something melodic? and with heart? what have you been listening for 6:11 minutes? It has all of that in spades. If again you are one of those people that think soul and heart lies within only bluesy playing and resuffled doublestopy-bendy licks that have been done to death then obviously this video isnt for you....

He has amazing technical ability but I would never listen to this. Music is for your ears and not your eyes and this sounds stale- there are no dynamics. I feel like he has the skill to be one of the best but less is sometimes more.

I can see where you're coming from. Me personally, I like to listen to technical stuff like this. I think Andy James is a phenominal guitarist. Slash is cool and all, and I like him a lot. But like the other guy said, he's not very technical.

That is an opinion I guess. There's a lot of shredders' trash nowadays, but besides some heartless parts in Andy James' music, a lot of his songs are very melodic. But maybe that's just me.

A year ago I clicked on a vid of him demoing an amp or some product and instantly went on amaazon and bought his last cd. A 3 minute demo for an amp and I was hooked. This guy has the goods and hopefully Satch and whoever puts on G3 tours will give this new up and comer a chance to showcase his skills to the masses.
