No... it came out of Dirty South hip hop... but at this time it wouldnt have been well known outside of that scene. Hard to say if Conan's viewership really spread it any further as he was mostly watched by high college kids who probably already knew about it from hip hop.

Meh, they likely knew the song fine, just didn't put the name with it. For some reason I get a different mental image, closer to something like Nazareth or 3 Dog Night, when I hear the name Thin Lizzy, then the 'Boys Are Back' riff comes to me and I put it together.

I remember doing that back in the 80's after loving the Metallica song and finding out to my surprise they were not covering the song per se but specifically Thin Lizzy's version because the Garage Days EPs were in fact tributes to their heros. I learned a lot about music from them.
