ANDREW WEATHERALL on Manchester (full interview)... R.I.P. MAESTRO

Ойын-сауық

Manchester Keeps on Dancing is a feature-length film that documents - in exceptional detail - the arrival of House music into Manchester from Chicago in the 1980’s, through to the Acid House explosion of 1988 and the following 30 years of its phenomenal rise to today.

They say you should never meet your idols - they clearly didn't know Andrew. I've torn up dance floors across Europe to his God-like sets. I've had the pleasure of going up to him for a chat (off my bin btw)and was blown away by how grounded and proper sound he was. And he remembers me months later at another gig and we drank and toked and chatted shit until he had to go on. Unforgettable. Gentleman. LEGEND. ICON. GOD (was a DJ).

Very sad news losing Andrew. One of the biggest influencers on me as a DJ, and one the best interviewees on my KISS show back in the day where he gave both me and the listeners a real musical education on the 'Defining musical moments' slot. I also booked him for club nights in Manchester and had the honour of doing the warm up for him on a few occasions, each time he was utterly brilliant and it was an utter thrill to play with him. He was utterly engaging, and a proper geezar and actually very generous to me as a young kid inviting me to his studio to hang out. As a really young man making my way in the industry, it used to fill me with pride that when I saw him at a festival or at a record shop and he'd smile and go "alright Matt" - I mean this guy produced Screamdelica and he's acknowledging me! My favourite of all the original House and Baleric DJ's. He's the greatest for me out of all the UK pioneers as he was the DJ who could put an eclectic set of tunes together and make it make total and utter sense. And,... he never sold out. The best of his generation. Even now not being part of the scene if I want to put a set on at home, he's the first guy I think of sticking on. An absolute innovator and one of a kind. An army of dance lovers and aficionados will be in mourning tonight. You will be missed Andrew. RIP fella, thanks for the good times.

I used to listen to your show most nights Matt & even won a few records on the competitions you used. to have lol. I remember hearing the Weatherall interview & many others as well including a young Daft Punk. Still have some tapes somewhere, you introduced me to some great house music on your show, stuff like Paper Music, Rainy City, 51 days.... Kiss became crap when it changed to Galaxy.

Would be great to hear some of those shows again. If I remember correctly that was the interview where Weatherall referred to the Happy Mondays as "a council estate Can" which I thought was a typical brilliant AW quote. Heartbreaking passing bless Andrew great story Andrew had many stories an oracle of knowledge and wisdom his passion for music was infectious wonderful human being. We shared so many great times together in the 88-91 days Andrew brought out the best in everybody and personally a great inspiration books film art music life in general. Remember the crazy mini bus magical mystery tour to the Hacienda in 88 Andrew came along for the ride and after the night on return to London in our mini bus heaven knows how but we ended up at dawn in the Brecon Beacons and went walking in the Mountains which turned into a scene out of the Kes and One flew over the cuckoos nest combined crazy times happy days of Acid House. Love and appreciation Andrew.

So sad x Rest in peace to a genius innovator; Mr Andrew Weatherall. Anecdote alert--he was DJing at a festival when two people came up to him and said “we own that record, you’re playing it at the wrong speed “ The maestro asked them how much they paid to get in, then refunded them and told them to go home. Ha! Anyone that can morph indie into dance is a genius in my book. His tattooed arms said it all… ‘Fail we may, sail we must'

At the Arches in Glasgow, an old friend became engaged in conversation with another clubber, a southerner called Andy in the seated area. The friend was more a fan of Elvis, Irish folk music and 70's and 80's rock music, so they chatted about that, not house music. When he got round to asking what brought him north, Andy replied he was playing a set that night. As the cogs turned he asked Andy if he was the Andy Weatherall his friends friends had came to hear that evening. Andy casually said it would seem to be the case, then steered the conversation back to Elvis and the rest. By the time the friend found me in the large dark nightclub, Andy had disappeared and merged with the countless others there on that night. I'm glad it ended like that, with an air of mystery.

Ironic that great as AW was he helped destroy the very thing that inspired him to go north in the first place,Bands. The sumami of Dance music/drug culture/sampling begat a generation where forming bands and creating scenes was phased out .no one could be arsed..Club culture became awash with drug dealers and violence.Where are the new Manchester northern bands inspired by it? There is no record industry anymore that gave life to Northern bands Ecstasy is not a creative drug. The hacienda became a dangerous place to go out..its now a block of flats.
