    Andrew Neil has taken over Sir Robin Day's mantle as the political interviewer the politicians genuinely fear. It gave me a warm glow inside to see Robin Day put Margaret Thatcher in her place, after she addressed him as "Mr Day". He immediately came back with " it's *Sir* Robin actually"....... Anyone else remember that?

    @@GromDarkwater Following the Scotland Acts 2012 and 2016, the Scottish Government has the power to undertake capital borrowing of up to £3 billion (with an annual limit of £450m) and resource borrowing of up to £1.75 billion (with an annual limit of £600m). Resource borrowing can only be undertaken in very specific circumstances, as set out in the Fiscal Framework agreed by the Scottish and UK Governments.General government (UK) gross debt was £1,876.8 billion at the end of the financial year ending (FYE) 2020, equivalent to 84.6% of gross domestic product (GDP), and 24.6 percentage points above the reference value of 60.0% set out in the protocol on the excessive deficit procedure. As far as debt goes, here is some food for thought ....www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2020/07/28/scotland-debt/

    @@genghis-mckhan that link is flawed and misses one key point. The UK govt can pass on whatever debt it wants as part of the independence agreement. Scotland won't be going independent like America or Ireland did, it's closer to the UK exiting the EU. The UK can, and will, as they stated in 2014 be giving Scotland about 1/5th of the UK national debt. And just as the UK couldn't take back the money from the EU spent on the Buildings or other aspects of the EU, the UK isn't planning on giving scotland squat in terms of UK assets. Food for thought though, is the Shetlands and Orkney continue with their plans to become crown dependencies Scotland's oil fields effectively become non existent.

  • @GromDarkwater

    @GromDarkwater

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@genghis-mckhan just looked it up. The precedent is set for break away nations where they take debt to an equivalent to population share. In the case of Scotland that's 8.2%. so £172,200,000,000 Scotland's assets would amount to £5,500,000,000 using the same internationally recognised standard. Then we minus off the Covid Relief fund as the UK govt has said they will reclaim this if independence is taken so that's £8.2 billion - leaving £2.7 billion once assets have been minused off. Giving a grand total bill of £174.9 billion, but just cause the UK is nice £175 billion. Scotlands white paper, which is a work of fiction, said the UK will keep the debt and Scotland pay the interest. UK said no, international rules are on the UK side. So unless Scotland wants to be an international pariah it will have to pay off the bill. But seeing as it has no central bank it can't just print the money, it can't borrow on international markets what to do? So an independent Scotland with no assets, no currency, no central bank, no real civil service, no international presence and no real industry will start its life with a debt of £175 billion and a GDP of £66 billion. That's a debt of almost 300%. Which means Scotland finally becomes a world leader, edging out Japan as the nation with the highest debt to GDP. Please tell me how you think this will work?

    Greig you seem to be sure that we will enter the EU. That will be decided after we leave the UK and I presume there will be transition should Yes win the vote. Then after I would say debates and meetings with Scot Gov to decide what we want from the EU and what it expects from us. Then the negotiations would be made public and then a referendum will decide whether we go down that road or not. I am sorry you have this feeling about the EU they have great respect for Scotland and the communities benefitted greatly from EU grants. Once indy happens please go to the EU debates and talks find out more. Also we will have a voice and a veto in the EU at present we are treated like a colony of England that you cannot deny.

    ***** I'm sorry, can you show me the economic figures that you are citing? Because the Scottish government's own figures (GERS 2014/15) show that there was a £1400 gap between the money Scotland raises in taxes and expenditure in 2015 alone. This means that taxpayers across the rest of the UK are, in fact, subsidising the Scottish government to the tune of around £700 (the rest part of the UK's overall deficit)

  • @TheJeffryButnic2

    @TheJeffryButnic2

    8 жыл бұрын

    ***** Actually, my main point is why haven't you presented the exact figures you're working off of? I have quoted a source. You, as far as I can tell, are making it up as you go along. *On deficit* Scots deficit is over 9% of GDP, the wider UK deficit is 4%. This means that rUK pays half of Scotland's deficit, the rest (as you point out) being debt. *On my 'biased' figures* GERS: Government Expenditure and Revenues Scotland. They are Scottish government figures, not from Westminster. And the Scottish government is run by the Scottish National Party. Therefore, if these figures are biased towards any side it would be towards independence.

    It annoys me how Nicola Sturgeon talks about Scotland being taken out of the EU against it's will when the 38% of Scottish Voters was enough for the leave campaign to achieve a marginal victory so she must acknowledge & accept that Scotland did play a crucial part in the brexit result, also if the Yes campaign had won in 2014 Scotland would not only have left the UK but also they would have left the EU anyway cos the sovereignty of a separate Scotland is entirely different from the sovereignty of a UK that includes Scotland so it would be impossible for Scotland to just automatically stay in the EU as a separate country therefore avoiding the process of applying to be in the EU which is a process that can last for years. The SNP argument has been blown apart with the decline in oil prices. This was always assuming that an independent Scotland would attain all those oil supplies in the first place. Scotland is floated on monies heading South to North. It enjoys the relative low taxation rates of the UK whilst enjoying the public services similar to that of Sweden. An independent Scotland would need to drastically increase taxation to maintain these public services or face having to cut services. It is interesting that the Scottish parliament has the power to raise local taxation but chooses not to. This is because the SNP wants to lure Scotland into the folly of independence before an unpopular hike in taxation. Neil should also have pressed Sturgeon on how Scotland would have shifted from an economy reliant on the public sector largely "taking in England's washing" to a private sector driven economy. The SNP want independence at any cost and is happy to fool Scots into thinking independence would be a Utopia.

  • @Kaiserbill99

    ***** The Barnett Formula means that Scots have their services effectively subsidised by England. Scotland is a bit like Ireland in the EU. It gets back far more than it puts in. And don't give me that bollocks imvolving oil revenues. Re taxation and higher taxation V dividends, not all high earners are in a position to pay themselves dividends as they are employees and to sustain levels of expenditure in Scotland post independence middle income taxation would need to increase too. So your argument is nonsense. Also taking your taxation argument further in a post independent Scotland, don't you think both businesses and high earners will re-locate a few miles down the road to England being faced with prospect of punitive taxes? And what are all these public sector workers servicing the UK going to do for a living? Last time I looked about 20% of Scotland's workers were engaged in public sector or publicly funded organisations. Scotland's population is only about 8% of the UK's. The arguments for Scottish independence are plain daft.

  • @Kaiserbill99

    @Kaiserbill99

    ***** So you did raise the oil issue. Britain has been a sovereign nation for over 300 years but North Sea Oil has only been around some 50 years. It is British oil not Scottish oil. If oil was discovered off the Cornish coast we wouldn't call it Cornish oil. I am a Director of my own company and my accountant maxes out my dividend payments at 20% tax. If the top rate of tax increased I would still max out earnings as dividends and minimise my taxable earnings. So again your argument is incorrect because anyone with their own limited company will be doing the same already. It is middle income people in Scotland and senior managers in large companies that would be hammered. Re public sector, not only is Scotland's public sector higher than most countries, as you recognise, but much of that public sector services a UK population of 60m not a population of 8m. Do you think a rUK would want to leave its social security depts in a foreign country? And what happens to all the pension commitments?

Oil is a British asset not a Scottish one. I hate to be the one to break it to you but Scotland ceased to be a real country 300 odd years ago. Over 150 years before Prussia and Saxe-Coburg ceased to be. Scotland in real terms is no more a country than Cornwall, Rutland, or the Black Country. There are no Scottish embassies and no Scottish seat on the UN or Scottish passports. Maritime law is very ambiguous about ownership of maritime assets in the event of parting of a free democratic long established nation. Plus I think we have reached the point where North Sea oil is a "dead duck" anyway There may be job losses in the public sector at the moment but an independent Scotland would need to shed bucket loads of jobs. The Telegraph in Sept 2014 estimated that as many as 2 in 10 of the 545,200 public sector jobs in Scotland (21% of total workforce) would be at risk and this excluded the nationalised banks. You over state the number of Directors in a position to pay dividends and under estimate the effect on middle income Scotland of tax increases. Re the "Tory subsidies" the Barnett formula has been in existence since 1978 and so was introduced during Jim Callaghan's Labour Government. It covers Wales, and Northern Ireland too so your "Tory" conspiracy theory is nonsense. Even Barnett himself has described the system as a mistake and completely unfair on the English taxpayer. The removal of the formula now it has been in place for so long would be a red rag to a bull to non unionists. You're beginning to sound like yet another "chip on the shoulder glass is half empty" Scotsman to me.

    The_Red_Queen Same! She's a cretin and a fraud who thinks she speaks for all us Scots. She's a complete fanny full a pish. I think she's full of baloney but then again I think every single politician out there is the same but she's a danger to my country personally. All of them would sell you up the golden path for their own gains though. Sturgeon wants another 20,000 refugees brought into Scotland if we gain independence. What do they do in time? Correct shag each other which means they become say 40,000 to 60,000. Yet have you tried getting your kids into a local school as it is? Have you tried getting on the council list ( these refugees will become first ) I mean does she not see what's happening in Sweden, Germany or France ? Is it no coincidence there's no attacks in places like Czech Republic, Norway, Japan or Hungary ect.. Yea no mass immigration that's why. She's willing to sell her own people's freedom and put us in danger I don't like the woman at all. On the politicians in Uk in general there all as bad as each other. Tories are causing the NHS to fail on purpose as they want privatisation and they hate anyone who's maybe receiving benefit.. Be it single mothers, disability, health and child care.. If Tories have there way you'll receive nothing. Basically ensuring the poorest of the poor can go die in a hole somewhere as the rich get richer. Cobyn and labour are a bunch of twats and he said he'd have open door immigration basically come and go as you please cause that works right? Just like the guy who rammed his truck into a crowd of people in Germany and then went across two other countries ( France and Italy ) with ease but hey, freedom of movement right..Anyways I'm rambling but had get off my chest lol, bye 👋🏼 in short politicians are all wankers 👍

    It's not hypocrisy, she's establishing her point. You can't judge an economy over just one year, it will vary from year to year, for e.g the UK's deficit in 2008 was twice as big as Scotland's and in 2016 Scotland's was twice as big as the UK's. Quite shocking you weren't able to understand that rather basic and straight-forward point and instead saw it as hypocrisy?

    I'm sorry, was Scotland not in an economic crisis along with the UK during the recession? Of course it was. Scotland was hit too, just not as hard. During the last crisis, when Scotland and rUK all suffered, Scotland performed better. Today, Scotland is facing its own crisis, and income per head is now 1% lower than the UK average - for the first time in over 3 decades. It's average income is still higher than most UK regions despite one of its most important sectors struggling. Damn, Scotland is sinking.

    +gotsda Unemployment in the North East & Aberdeen is a growing problem. January figures showed it was up almost 70% in Aberdeen. It is by no means all right. Scotland as a whole however, saw an increase in employment and surpassed its pre-recession record. It continues to have the highest employment rate in the UK despite major job losses in the NE. The Scottish economy & employment rate are still growing in this incredibly difficult situation, which I can only say shows how strong & resilient it is. Clearly, there is much more to Scotland's economy than oil.
