When they canvassed for independence their major funding base was raising taxes on North Sea Oil. In reality the tax burden was already such that the taxes were a flat basis on oil extracted regardless of whether a profit was made. This combined with VAT made a number of the wells uneconomic, this combined with the fact that much of the pipework is shared between wells as such if the uneconomic wells closed the profitable ones would in turn become uneconomic as their share of the joint costs would rise. As such their budget for 2017 Oil income was in the region of £17 billion whereas in reality so many well closed the net cost in tax refunds for closing wells was a net refund of £0.5billion.
