Andrew Klavan | Can We Keep Silent in a World Gone Mad?

Andrew Klavan is an author, screenwriter, and host of The Andrew Klavan Show. He is also a contributing editor to the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal, for which he travelled as an embed reporter with American troops in Afghanistan. A five-time nominee and two-time winner of the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award and a recipient of the Thumping Good Read Award, Mr. Klavan has written for numerous publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. He is the author of numerous novels, including Nightmare City, the Homelanders series, the Mindwar trilogy, Don’t Say a Word, True Crime-which was made into a film by Clint Eastwood-and, most recently, Another Kingdom. His non-fiction writings include a memoir of his religious journey, The Great Good Thing: A Secular Jew Comes to Faith in Christ and a book of satire, The Leftese Dictionary. He has written a number of screenplays, including A Shock to the System, which starred Michael Caine, and Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer, starring Dean Cain.
Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

I know this has been a while -- I hope you've found some more of Andrew's stuff because it's brilliant. If you haven't, please consider listening to his podcast Episode 313 "What If Everything's Fine". It's from the period right after Donald Trump fired James Comey and the press and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) were running around with their undies in a bundle about the President obstructing justice. I use that show as a gateway drug to get people to listen to his podcast, The Andrew Klavan Show. It's great -- love the old guy's sense of humor.

Susan Marie- I agree that most, not all, students do buy into the Socialism nonsense. However, I’ve found that all you need to do to change some of their minds is to challenge these ideas. For example: I like to ask the students in the National Honor Society if they’d be willing to give up 1.0 point of their 4.5 cumulative GPA to a student who has a 1.5 cumulative GPA. Most, not all, say absolutely not. They argue that they’ve worked hard for their GPA and it wouldn’t be fair to give away their work results to a person who hasn’t put in the effort needed to get into a University. You can see that a lot of the students have an epiphany and from that moment on I hope that they at least start to critically think about some of their beliefs.

That way you give a person a chance who hadn't even listened to the lyrics of their own song they were playing. You set them an example of bravery, if that's all that's holding them back from making better choices of friends & music. To do it successfully, we need to be born again, and people do figure that out...especially if someone gives them the Good News about how to access that! :)

DH A sign of a free society is the separation of money and power. Another is the ability to live a life away from politics. Leftist systems consolidate money and power such that every move is political, and you cannot survive without power. In a free society there are many elites; in a far leftist system only one. It is innately corrupt. But somehow the leftists who spit with envy at those who thrive in the voluntary economy, through, yes, work, creativity, perseverance, and luck, aren't distressed in the slightest by those who use power to get wealth, and wealth to get power, in an ever-shrinking circle of theft and control from which ordinary people are excluded.

I’ve alway felt these things but I’ve never been able to articulate them so well. To formulate and order my thoughts so that I could better explain my position when I’m inevitably confronted regarding my stance on politics, religion and morality. I’ve always been on the outside of the popular positions on these topics. Now I know I’m not alone on this and that it’s OK if I can’t explain it as well Mr. Klavan. I have a realist concept as my worldview, and as such, to comment that man "is only material", lacks a metaphysical quality that enhances and as well amplifies life's countless pleasures, creativity and dwells as a source for his altruistic behavior, for which we as a race can and should think of as the cause for such great entities like Philosophy, Sociology, most of, if not all of the Humanities. The spiritually that man is endowed with, and as well, abstract thought brought about such thinking that created an opening for Philosophy that leads to everything else and is one of the direct proponents for these kind of qualities.

@@THESLlCK From what circumstance was Jesus a refugee? He lived under Roman laws in a Roman empire, he never attempted to escape, he instructed his followers to abide by the laws, and he was ultimately executed at the demand of respected religious leaders within the Roman empire on claims that Jesus had challenged the Roman emperor's authority (but it was really about the pharisees' envy of Jesus and Jesus's apostasy). I would be interested to know how, specifically, your youth leader has determined Jesus to have been a refugee. I'd imagine that the justification of such a claim would rest in the distortion of the definition of the term "refugee" to fit into the narrative of a contemporary sociopolitical opinion, and that is the kind of perversion of doctrine which drives young people away from faith every single day.
