Am watching “Under the Banner of Heaven” now with first three episodes. Garfield is a remarkable actor performing a difficult role. A man of faith finding conflict with his beliefs and the inherent problem with radical faith and church coverup of its history inflicting wounds upon current generations. I’m not a Mormon but I think he has been respectful of the Mormons while questioning how such evil can exist in the church, and also in its beginnings. I look forward to watching the rest of this series. But I am pretty much of the belief that any church that can order Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857 is not worthy of respect.

All the active members of the LDS church say this is not accurate. All the ex-mormons say it’s super accurate. Just shows how much is really hidden from the active members. They don’t know any better. As an ex mormon this is one of the best shows i’ve seen and yes it has some over the top stuff for hollywood but for the most part it’s extremely accurate to what mormonism is based on and this show is truly a love letter to ex mormons. Our trauma is valid. And andrew does an amazing job at portraying that inner battle with his faith crisis

@@choosethewright7652 this is very accurate to the TIME in the 80s. And just because YOU don’t talk like that doesn’t mean that other mormons do. or DID. The temple ceremonies are completely accurate. they took the slash your throat part out after this murder took place matter of fact. I’ve been a mainstream mormon for over 22 years. just recently left and it was awful learning about the churches real history. It’s so hard. yes mormons now a days are for the most party pretty nice but like i said, you don’t know hardly any of the churches real history because you are taught to avoid it and take anything that’s not directly from the churches website as “anti mormon literature” when it’s literally just fact. Mormonism IS a cult. wake up.

And any time we do, we are shut down by active members. This is a way of trying to silence victims of trauma. ex mormons don’t lie. Why would we lie about what we went through and what we learned? We don’t have anything to gain. We’ve been through enough being outcasts of our community. We aren’t attacking the church. We are trying to heal. For a church that “loves unconditionally” it’s pretty messed up to always play the victim. This show has a beautiful message and they did an amazing job. stop being defensive about it.

@@endertobias1908 As regarding the culture in Utah Valley in the 1980s it is quite accurate. The only things that are a little over-the-top are calling each other Brother and Sister in secular situations (usually not the habit unless you are personally very close to the person or currently going through a trauma). And it was unlikely then for a devout Mormon to have a picture of Joseph Smith on their desk. But having a picture of Joseph Smith on the wall at home is something that was quite common, and still is today. The reenactment of the Temple ceremonies are quite accurate as to what they were like in the 1980s. Lots of Mormons need to express their outrage that their secret ceremonies are being shown in a mainstream media production. Thus, they claim it is "not accurate." They need to convince people Mormons in history really didn't do these things, but THEY DID! They hope to dissuade people from watching the series with claims of "being mean" to Mormons. What do you think of these important questions?: 1) Should we not tell the truth about a particular religion because it might hurt the feelings of people in a particular religion who don't want the violent leanings of their faith exposed? 2) Should we not explore the reasons that religious murderers commit murder for fear of offending those who want to believe that way?

I’m seeing a ton of people saying “I’m a Mormon and this show sucks” alongside people saying “I’m not a Mormon and this is a beautiful show” I will say, I’m a member of the church, and I think the show is great! Do I think it’s an accurate portrayal of my beliefs? No, the focus of the show is radical fundamentalists, people who I wouldn’t even consider to be members of this church. And even at the root of the Mormon fundamentalism, they lose focus on the most fundamental truths in Mormon belief, which is to love God and love your neighbor. (And let’s not forget the whole “judge not” stuff, which those fundamentalists seemed to forget completely.) But on the positive side, Andrew Garfield did an incredible acting job so far in the series, the story is compelling, and no matter how much it makes me cringe when people randomly quote long-form scripture in conversation (which I have never heard done in my life) the actors each clearly cared about the project, and it shows.

I live in St. George, Utah. We moved here in 96. I've never known much about Mormonism. We always thought a variety of things. My husband was saying there would be no way he would marry else when I'm a bit of a handful lol. After we were here for about a year, we learned a lot more about it. .What we were thinking was the FLDS. Which is what the Lefferts's were. We live in the area where Warren Jeff was. My family goes to a Baptist Church in St. George. One of the ladies we met when we first moved here was filling us in on how things go around us. When the book "Under the Banner of Heaven" came out we couldn't find it anywhere. I ended up having to pick a copy up when I went to visit family in Arizona. There wasn't any book stores except the ones that are run by Mormons. We've been here since 1996 and we love it here. It was pretty difficult for a few years. Our daughters was in high school when we first moved here. It took a year for them to make friends since they weren't LDS. We've never gone to any of their services or other things. It was a huge learning curve. We've never regretted moving here. When I finally got a copy of the book, I bought a few more so people at church's could read it if they want. When my friends that are Mormons see the book on the shelves, they were uncomfortable. They never asked to borrow one. I have a lot of friends were Mormons and I've learned so much more that shocked me in many ways. If they ask something or if they can look through the book, they had a weird look on their face. The show is really good. I've been waiting to watch it. I wonder if there will ever be a show about the mountain meadows massacre's.

@@KidsandKittens217 Since this is a crime that when I was young and seemed a little off from what I remembered I investigated looking for actual accounts of the case. Also being very well versed in Mormon history the flash backs also seemed off. Based on public interviews with family and people involved many people especially the Laufferty perpetrators and victims where sometimes subtly sometimes grossly mischaracterized. There was not Waco like event as depicted. The history flashbacks also took lots of liberties with events attributing some things to Joseph, Brigham and others which they didn't do and giving narrative moving characterizations of people involved in the history backs which were both prejudicial and inaccurate. In total from what I saw the only accurate thing about the show was the directors intent to tell a certain story regardless of accurate facts about those real people involved, hence why he needed some fictional characters to move the narrative and which moved it clumsily for me.

@God Look I lived through this event, and the series was way off on its portrayal. In addition the responses of people who were intimately involved in the investigation and with the family tell a far different story. At best this series is a fantasy based around an event, kind of an elseworlds which was poorly rendered. The film maker was simply spitting out his own bias as fact and doing a poor job of it. In reality it is about as accurate as Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter. Andrew Garfield really is a talented actor, but he was wasted in this series, and it had the potential to be a riveting suspense series if they had stuck to the facts and not tried to push their agenda so clumsily.

I liked the show. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We prefer not to be called by the name of a man, Mormon, but prefer disciples of Jesus Christ. The show brings up some topics sensitive to some, but we believe God is the source of truth, and He will not tell us anything that goes against revealed doctrines. The missionaries from the Church taught me I could pray to God independent of a priest or preacher. That gave me faith to pray to Him always, and each time I trusted an answer from Him in faith, I learn how to be more humble, patient, kind, submissive, open, welcoming, accepting, loving, and loyal. Each answer brings me closer to my goal of being like Jesus Christ, which means pure love for all. I still have a long journey filled with pain and sadness; but there is joy in the journey.

The church didn't turn those two men into murderers, those men did it themselves. The fact that that's being portrayed as normal Mormonism is horrible. And yes, I recognize that there MANY MANY problems within our religion, but come on🤦‍♂️ Oh btw, the creator of the show was raised Mormon and seems very bitter about it all... It’s meant to be about Mormon fundamentalism, not the mainstream church. Also, did you watch the show? It very much shows the Lafferty brothers’ train of thought and shows that it’s not the “norm” for regular members (like Garfield’s character). But current Mormons should know that Brigham Young absolutely taught and performed blood atonement, which is why it’s relatively common in Fundamentalist Mormon groups. Sorry it’s uncomfortable, but that doesn’t make it untrue.

Yes, that’s true. But it’s important to know that Brigham young absolutely did teach blood atonement, which is where fundamentalists get the idea. These extremist groups have some doctrinal legs to stand on, unfortunately.

    1) this is a look at Mormon Fundamentalism. Mainstream Mormons are just conditioned to see it as an attack because it’s critical. But it’s really not about the church as it is today, but about the history and why it creates extremists. 2) some things are simplified or distilled for simplicity’s sake. For example, the show runners know that BYU is in Provo, not SLC, but they said SLC instead because it’s more familiar to audiences. I grew up Mormon in the 1980s in Provo. The only thing I’m finding inaccurate is the overuse of the term “heavenly father.” The history of Joseph Smith, blood atonement, and all the other doctrine are true. What is it you’re finding specifically inaccurate?
