The title alludes to the fact that the piece is constructed of eleven sections and to the imaginary gates that one passes through - either abruptly or seamlessly - in moving from one to another.
I entertained myself by giving each section a title, describing in a more or less surrealistic way what’s going on:
1. Drifting into D major - precisely what the title suggest, the music drifts from a cluster into a majestic D major chord.
2. Suddenly in the Room with Chattering Mirrors - a somewhat more surrealistic description of what’s going on.
3. D major Still Life - again, precisely what’s happening.
4. Confused Dialogues with Woodpecker - a strange meeting between Webern’s Piano Variations op. 27 and a Donald Duck Cartoon
5. Suddenly in the Room with Floating Mirrors - a surreal image
6. Into the Great Wide Open - the dynamic climax of the piece with the full orchestra suggesting endless, open vistas.
7. Meadow of Sadsongs - the Oboe’s soar in a cantilena full of sadness.
8. Toypianos on the Surface of the Sea - another surreal description of the music
9. String Quartet spiraling to the Seafloor - I find this image very captivating, the string quartet slowly sinks down to the
10. Seafclorr Meditation
11. Waves, Pulse and Elastic Seabirds - a pretty exact description of what’s happening.
Elevs Gates is commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
It was premiered in Walt Disney Hall, LA, in May 2006, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, to whom the work is warmly dedicated.
