As a Chinese, I have to correct some unfair comments here: This event happened in the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, which is part of Sino-Japanese war (or called War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression). The Sino-Japanese war is probably one of the most important battlefields of WWII on the east side. Japan started his full scale of planned invasion into China since 7 July 1937, Marco Polo Bridge Incident (七七事变) , and Japan actually invaded and occupied Northeastern part of China since 1931! The WWII is not only a war between Germany/Italy/Japan against USA/UK/France/СССР, but involve many other countries in the world. The WWII also did not only start from Pearl Harbour or German invasion to Poland, but much early!!! People should remember the history in a correct way so we can avoid WWIII.

Agree 100% with you on this. There are so many more territories involved and so many stories told inaccurate. During WWII people fought for the freedom of their children and freedom of the generations to come, they fought with all their might for better future. We ough it to them to atleast have our facts correct for we are living in the world they dreamt and fought for!

unfortunately, the truth is much worse than what have been shown in the movie. after they retreated to the British concession, they were treated unfairly - they were incarcerated in a house, not allowed to see/talk to anyone from outside, couldnt sing National Anthem etc. Few years later, the captain got assassinated by Japanese gov, and some of them were banished to other countries to do some drudge work, most of them died and now only 1 or 2 of them still alive.

This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I’ve heard. You hear the music of “O Danny boy” then you know it is so much more. Set against the atrocities of war the beautiful voices are heard. The two voices blend they do not compete yet individually they stand out all alone. You know what’s going on and what’s in their hearts. To #AndreaBocelli and #NaYing BRAVO BRAVO this is what makes opera so great you may not know the language but you know what’s going on in your heart and sometimes that’s all you need to know no subtitles needed. 😢😊

Thank you, Maestro Bocelli, for the Na Ying duo. I am European. I heard about Na Ying in October 2019 when she participated in the Our Song music show as a mentor and duo partner with Xiao Zhan. Na Ying is a true Chinese pop icon with a wonderful voice and interesting personality. I sincerely recommend this program to everyone, all episodes of which are available on the official Shanghai TV channel on YT and on the music channel. Almost all episodes have English subtitles. Na Ying first appears in episode 3. Our Song was a real hit and the duo created by Na Ying and her young student Xiao Zhan are still beloved by millions of fans to this day. The NaZhanDui duo does not formally exist, but has already been the star of the Shanghai TV New Year's Eve concert twice, in 2019 and 2020. This duo is interesting for a number of reasons, one of which is that Na Ying has ventured to go beyond her own musical circle and for the sake of her apprentice she has ventured into performances that are simply unforgettable. Na Ying is also a wonderful person. When Xiao Zhan innocently fell victim to unprecedented online violence, she was one of those people who helped him get through the darkest period and get back on stage. It's not like she pulled the strings. She supported him mentally, as a partner and as a mentor, like a real big sister. Today they are both at the top, each proving that music is universal regardless of age, skin color or language we use. Once again, I recommend the program Our Song, which is liked by both younger and older viewers and is extremely warm, cheerful and allows you to get to know beautiful songs from China and broaden your musical horizons.

In 1937, The 800 soldiers were in a mission of no victory...just to delay the Japanese troop entering into Shanghai as long time as possible and gave time for the main Chinese troop to retreat. That was more likely a suicide mission, they knew they may not have chance to go home alive. A very good song modified from Irish - Danny Boy / Londonderry Air...makes my eyes full of tears. I wish the world will be peace forever, and no young man need to die for their countries anymore.

It's heartbreaking, it made me remember the stories of my grandfather (my Tatay) about his life as a soldier with Japanese, I miss my Tatay. 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Lyrics: My humble and hasty attempt to translate the Chinese part of the lyrics. 那英(Na Ying, She's 53 this year) part of lyrics Format: Chinese traditional characters Pronounciation English translation 硝煙將盡 塵未遠餘音縈繞 xiao yan jiang jin, chen wei yuan yu yin ying rao Gun smokes were fading. Dust was not far away, and the sound (of war) was still lingering. 隔岸相顧 盼願再無喧囂 ge an xiang gu, pan yuan zai wu xuan xiao We looked at each other across the river. Wishing there's no more chaos. 暮色將至 輕吟唱心愛歌謠 mu se jiang zhi, qing yin chang xin ai ge yao The evening was approaching. We started singing our beloved song. 待到破曉 奔赴家鄉懷抱 dai dao po xiao, ben fu jia xiang huai bao We would wait till dawn. Then we'd run for the embraces of our home towns. 化作古風 揹負青山人未老 hua zuo gu feng, bei fu qing shan ren wei lao We'd morph into ancient wind (spiritual inheritance), shouldering blue mountains (home land) while never grow old again. 摯友已故 精氣終究未倒 zhi you yi gu, jing qi zhong jiu wei dao Our dear friends had died. Yet their spirits would stand tall. 故土燃燒 守衞者湧向風暴 gu tu ran shao, shou wei zhe yong xiang feng bao Our home land is burning. Guardians are charging toward the storm. 無憾與你相遙 幸而留下微笑 wu han yu ni xiang yao, xing er liu xia wei xiao I have no regret knowing you from afar. We are fortunate to have our smiles remain. (repeated at end of song)

The year 1937. Shanghai was divided by a river. On one side it belongs to China, on the other side it belonged to Britain. While 400+ German trained Nationalist soldiers ( they purposely said 800 to give the Japanese estimation a hard time ) held the Japanese for a month in a warehouse at the bridge, they were severely outnumbered and outgunned. It was the only battle in the world where one side fought and the other side had a full front seat view of everything. Some journalists recorded the whole battle everyday. The soldiers only left the warehouse after all the other soldiers had successfully retreated but by then only a small number of survivors were left. Today the warehouse still stand ( with bullet holes ) and the Chinese government has gazetted it a national treasure and reminder of the invasion so as not to let it repeat.
