00:00 Intro
00:51 What and Where is Andorra
There are no doubts that Andorra is one of the most unique countries in Europe. The country is located on the Pyrenees mountains, nested between France and Spain, which are EU members, part of the Schengen area. Andorra however is not part of the European Union, nor is it in the Schengen area. But, since it has a free movement agreement with both Spain and France, in normal circumstances no border controls to get in and out of the country.
Andorra is a principality, headed by the bishop of Urgell in Spain and the president of France.
As you can see right from the start, Andorra is quite unique, and the amount of uniqueness will just grow as you will watch this video.
Andorra is also unique in its excellence. It has some of the highest life expectancies in the world, which is easily understandable considering the high quality of life in the country. This fact, coupled with some of the lowest income tax rates in Western Europe, make Andorra one of the best countries in the world if your income comes from remote sources.
02:12 Residence Permit in Andorra (EU and non-EU citizens)
Usually we discuss residence permits in Europe separately for EU and non-EU citizens, as most countries in Europe are either in the European Union, or the European Economic Area. Andorra is one of the few exceptions to this. In other words, it doesn’t matter whether you are an EU citizen or not, you will need a residence permit to live in Andorra unless you are a citizen of the country
02:41 Residence Permit in Andorra
The first thing we need to know is that there are basically two very different categories of residence permits in Andorra, one is the active residence in Andorra, and the other guess what… is the passive residence in Andorra.
03:27 Active Residence Permit in Andorra
The active residence in Andorra can be obtained in two ways. The first way is if someone offers you a job in Andorra.
The second option is if you want to be self-employed or run a business in Andorra.
Among the requirements, you need to live more than 6 months a year in Andorra, pay the minimum social security contributions (465 euros a month) and make a deposit of 15000 to the Andorran Financial Authority
04:18 Passive Residence Permit in Andorra
If you want to live in Andorra and obtain passive residence in the country the requirements are a bit different.
The first option is if you want to live in Andorra as an investor. In this category you will need to invest 400k euros in Andorra.
The second option is ideal for businessmen with international relevance
At least 85% of your income must derive from sources outside Andorra.
The last option is for international artists, athletes or scientists. In this option you will also have to make a 50k euro deposit to the Andorran financial authority.
05:23 Andorra Permanent Residency
There is actually no real permanent residence permit in Andorra, and you will actually need to keep renewing your residence as long as you live in the country. As the years of residence go by and you are still in Andorra, the longer the residence permits are issued for. The longest you can go with a residence permit in Andorra is needing to renew it every 10 years.
06:00 Andorra Citizenship
If you want to get Andorran Citizenship by naturalization, you will actually be in for one of the longest time requirements to live in a country before you can apply for it. In normal circumstances, you will need to live 20 years in Andorra before you can apply for citizenship.
06:35 Advantages of living in Andorra:
-Quality of life (safety, air quality, nature, educated population, low poverty).
-The second important advantage of Andorra is its tax system. Taxation at a personal level ranges from 0 to 10%. Similar rates apply to corporations, with the general corporate income tax being at 10% but with some exceptions that pay less than that.
-Cost of living: The third advantage of Andorra is its cost of living. The cost of living in Andorra is actually quite comparable to the cost of living in Spain or France, but, considering that taxes are much lower in the principality, you will definitely have an edge if you live in Andorra.
08:16 Disadvantages
-Transport infrastructure
There are no airports or railways in Andorra, even though there is one airport called La Seu d’Urgell-Andorra Airport, which is actually in Spain, close to the Andorran border.
-Low population: the second disadvantage of Andorra is that it has a very low population. Currently Andorra has just 77 thousands inhabitants.
-Difficult to acquire citizenship: the last disadvantage of Andorra is that it is quite difficult to acquire citizenship.

Andorra, requires by law every male head of the family to own a gun for both militia purposes and self defense (and actually stipulates that in an emergency or attack, the police are to PROVIDE a gun to one who is without). My favorite part of Andorra

@@traveleconomics Thank you. But I already knew that. I am a startup and looking at mainly 3 things that are linked together. Shopping around in Europe for the cheapest deal on 1/ Company tax, and 2/ income tax to 3/ set up my company. The other places I am looking at are Bulgaria and (a long shot) The Republic of Ireland. I am not interested in tax avoidance or worst still, evasion as I see the good they do. But I am also 'commercially' aware. So I was looking for detailed information on rental on say, for example (out of thin air) a 3 bedroom house with a garden. Immo companies over in Andorra don't seem to see the power of the internet. Idealista is a very good start I think, so that's all I have at the moment.

Sorry I didn’t realize who made this video. Just “searched” “living in Andorra” and your video popped up first. I was 75% the way thru it and reading others replies and that’s when I hit pause to throw my 2 pence in…. and took off on my midnight rant full of a million Questions. Sorry about all those…and kinda got carried away. I just trimmed that back down to my primary 1 question. Got allot on my plate and allot of decisions to make as I lost my entire family this past year… and still grieving a huge loss but there’s nothing but bad memories here now… and nothing left for me anymore … so just being a mountain type guy but sick of what’s happened to the USA as a country; I just want some peace and quiet and some normal ppl that aren’t shooting schools up every other week or opening the borders open to 17 million illegal aliens?! I don’t understand what’s happening here! I just want out! I almost decided to return to England but fear things post-Brexit are getting just as bad there as the US is now. Dunno. . Andorra with skiing and being a days drive away from Monaco (F1) or Paris or Geneva or Barcelona etc plus loads of mountains and stunning nature ahd the Med… are all not all that far away… plus ironically as I watch the Tour de France cross the Spanish border into France on Stage 5 is def on my bucket list to see after watching it every day and every year for 23 years now - there’s just allot that appeals to me and ticks allot of boxes and also thinking my businesses would do well in France and Spain and Andorra. I did forget that they’re not in the EU so that’s now my only concern from a business-POV. Frankly speaking - I’m just tired of moving around and living out of a suitcase. Time to settle down for good…. but I appreciate your reply and offer to assist. You a certified consultant? I’ll read your page & info when I finish typing. Anyway; I appreciate your response. @traveleconomics thanks; yet again... Went thru your info after I finished with my mini-novel response and saw kinda what you do and charge. Unfortunately, I'm already working with Tom Bradford also here on KZread with a thousand how-to migration videos too. But he's a certified barrister specializing as a Migration Attorney working outta London and I've had six sessions with him now at £97 a pop. You never fully answered my Q as to "What you are?" (certified? Lawyer? Advisor?) As you've been really good to me and sincerely appreciate your time and help. But Tom's done 2 sessions gratis for me as we get on really well....and we tend to run long and over my time limit. Plus he also has other clients waiting ... so threw a couple of free extra sessions my way to wrap things up. He handles all my paperwork and forms etc. But we ran over the 90 min time limit twice; so he gave me two extra 90 min freebies the following week. So what's that? 540 minutes (6 hours thus far) for only £388 quid. So even without the 2 free sessions added in; he's about half the price you charge - and he's a 20-year migration attorney who knows the EU and UK system inside out. So much so he made some amazing "you better do this by the 1st before XYZ changes otherwise you may have to switch tiers on your application" type predictions that all have come true now ... which is one reason I'm looking at other options now. Because sure enough 9 weeks later - 1 April hit; and the UK Govt overhauled all its migration rules. Also the rejection rate jumped to a whopping 44%! Whilst it did force me into a different tier the cost or fees remained at the old tier price (£0!) So right now if I opt for life in Andorra I'll come in under the D or No.5 Business/Startup visa. And whilst its admittedly cheaper than most other EU countries; as noted above I'd forgotten they're not part of the EU... and since I deal with US imports/Exports as well as Scottish exports - I need to research that too and see if that'll impact or effect my core business or not? The €15,000 bond is kind of a bummer too. But still cheaper than most EU visas... Hard to believe they don't even ask for a business plan in Andorra? Anyway, I can fish my way around their system. It's pretty straightforward based on what I've seen and read thus far. Another option is I'm already incorporated (s.r.o.) in Prague CZE since 2012 but struggle with the language and "palm out" bribes and corrupt business practices there. So I sublet my office out during covid and only keep our old stock in a warehouse there for orders in the EU but can't ship it anywhere else inside the UK without getting crushed with import duties, VAT, and taxes. The irony is the product started its life in the UK and was shipped to Prague for storage and distribution pre-Brexit. Now it costs an arm and a leg to bring it back into the country. So we'll see? Looks like you're doing well advising ppl so I'll not dig any deeper here publically. But surely given the scenario I currently have you can appreciate why I have to stick with Tom for now? Or if you tell me you are a migration Attorney and then maybe we can discuss a retainer and your legal rates. I'd be happy to arrange a meeting/call. As I'm pretty jazzed about Andorra too plus I doubt he's ever done anything with them being non-EU. So we shall see? Watch this space. I'm here to network with experts and make business friends; not to burn bridges - so I pray that you understand my position and why I'm standing pat for now? Thanks again for your time and consideration. Who knows? Maybe the wheels will fall off in England/EU and I'll be forced to pick Andorra? I'll suss out the medical stuff and insurance and banking as I'm sure HSBC is there given their tax haven reputation. I'm also finding loads of amazing flats at half the price of US or UK flats! So part of me is really excited about at least spending a few weeks there on a recon mission of sorts to see if it's a good fit for me or not? My SOLE issue is air travel ... as I fly about 750,000 miles a year. At my peak (2013) I did 1.2M miles/yr. That's a trip every other day when fully booked. But as just said above, it's time to settle down as I'm burned out on travel and of doing life out of a suitcase. I speak Spanish some... and some French. So hoping that's enough to get me started? Does anyone speak English there? Don't answer that. You've done far too much for me already.... I spent 5 years learning Russian and Czech just because pre-genocide I was doing a shedload of business in both Russia and Ukraine. Now I can't even find 23 of 27 of my ex-employees or friends in Ukraine after 16 months of trying almost daily and fear the worst as we were east coast based except for a plant outside of Lviv that's a pile of rubble now taken out by an ICBM in March 2023 - plus my 22nd floor Odesa flat on the seat - was used as target practice during the first months of thee war .. and had 4 "Ring" cameras installed there as I rented it out when not there on business or holiday and have a shot of a flash of light and then just a black screen so looks like that was a direct hit. Nobody is there anymore to contact as they condemned the building after that attack. Good luck with insurance on either of those. The flat is no big loss.I onlyb paid €45K for it and made most of that back in a year with VRBO rentals... But the factory though? $+7M USD gone. They're calling it an "act of God". I call it an act of Putin! and hope that once this ends Russia is forced to pay restitution to make us all whole. So much death and destruction there. Scorched Earth is not cool! And def not the way to go. US news shows nothing of the true destruction and death there. It's so sad. Just look at Syria today. It'll never recover. But Ukraine is different they're rebuilding even today now as missiles wizz overhead. Amazing courage and fortitude... they are truly wonderful yet tough people and country. Peace. (Apologies for yet another novel-length response. Just that I'm an "all cards on the table" kinda guy and want all the facts out there so you understand my long-term goals and objectives. As well as where I'm at today and what I'm looking for in the years to come. Cool? Fair? Hope so. Thanks again. Cheers BB)

If I am non-eu entering from Spain to Andorra, how would I exit EU if there is still no border to get into Andorra? Spain would think I never did exit the Schengen area

yes, as for Spain, it will be as you have never left, and your days will still be counting in your visa or visa-free entry status. Unless you move to Andorra and get a residence permit, this won't change. Even if Andorra is not in the Schengen area, for visa counting days it is de facto Schengen.

Among the Muslim countries, I would probably recommend Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia.

It exists to some extent, pretty much at the same level as in Spain (rather in Spanish smaller cities). Nothing like California.

It’s impossible to get into Switzerland unless you’re blood related 1 generation or get a CEO type gig. and cost of living for the average Joe is double. I’d love to live there (CH) too but getting into Andorra vs Monaco or Switzerland even New Zealand has raised its golden visa to $10M and can’t buy real estate till you’re a full citizen. Plus their ageists now. so if you’re 51 you’re outta luck. I told NZIS after living there from 99-2007 and reapplied in 2019 as Covid hit it’d take 39 months for my visa to be approved shd id be 51 then and over their age limit. Screw that’! And told NZIS to kiss my arse. Oh they also banned all firearms after the mosque shooting not even private services or bank guards (truck guys) can have them. Only police. Last I heard in 40% have complied making 60% of New Zealand residents “felons”. Hopefully the Govt will change and they redraw that overreaching rule.

@@traveleconomics because they have small communities and they are always over with work. Administration system working badly. Have juste 5 banks so if you nit have millions to put in your compt they will not open account. Police will not protect you also. You should go in justice which is cost money fie lawyers and a lot of time because the justice is busy. So like this. You want more I can tell you of my experience.
