And You And I in HD by Yes

I'm Back! And what a great comeback song!
The song opens with Steve Howe tuning his guitar, and his voice can be heard at the beginning of the track, then playing mostly natural harmonics, played around what will become the central melody, using a 12-string acoustic guitar which quickly forms into a simple chord progression over distant organ chords. Then, the Moog comes, sounding like a child's instrument, for a simple solo, which presents us the main theme of the next part, but in a completely different arrangement. After that, the vocals begin at about 1:40. The line "All Complete in the sight of seeds of life with you" is spoken, which is repeated throughout the song. At about 2:50, there's an utter change: Anderson sings a sharper melody, accompanied by a second vocal track by Anderson harmonizing with himself, plus Chris Squire and Steve Howe providing a counter-melody and alternate lyrics, with their voices fed through a Leslie Speaker.
Lyrics:
[I Cord Of Life]
A man conceived a moment's answer to the dream
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim
A movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Changed only for a sight of sound, the space agreed
Between the picture of time behind the face of need
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotions revealed as the ocean maid
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coins and crosses
(Turn round tailor, assaulting)
Never know their fruitless worth
(all the mornings of the interest shown,
presenting one another to the cord)
Cords are broken
(All left dying, rediscovered
Of the door that turned round)
Locked inside the mother Earth
(To close the cover, all the
interest shown)
They won't hide, hold, they won't tell you
(To turn one another, to the
sign at the time float your climb)
Watching the world, watching all of the world
Watching us go by
And you and I climb over the sea to the valley
And you and I reached out for reasons to call
[II Eclipse]
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotions revealed as the ocean maid
As a movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
[III The Preacher, The Teacher]
Sad preacher nailed upon the coloured door of time
Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify
Political ends as sad remains will die
Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you
Oooh, ooh
I listened hard but could not see
Life tempo change out and inside me
The preacher trained in all to lose his name
The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same
In the end we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalize
That the truth of man maturing in his eyes
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
As a moment regained and regarded both the same
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you
[IV Apocalypse]
And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning
And you and I reach over the sun for the river
And you and I climb, clearer towards the movement
And you and I called over valleys of endless seas

When it's this good, it stays with you all through your life . I still remember standing outside a record store and hearing the first bars of this track in the early 70s. I stayed and later bought the album and it's been a source of joy ever since...

@@Jessica_Roth I dated a girl for five years a when this came out. I, as wel, found it to be such an exhilarating love song. Typical male back then, did not know how to express my love for her so I brought her to my house and we listened to this in well decorated black light room. I thought she would understand where the lyrics were coming from and why I wanted her to hear this album. Alas, during the next few months she got into going to Wresting Events, less than a year later, she dumped me, apparently for a bartender almost as old s her dad! The surprising thing was, although the breakup was not what I wanted, what hurt the most was not remaining frends after six years. It gave me a good idea about that person was really all about!

I saw it as "happiness and feelings of weirdness" out of my peripheral vision.... but I don't mean that as a put-down, LoL. Contrarily, I mean this music sounds too GOOD to be of mortal Earth. It's like you're getting something supernatural, something that shouldn't be possible on this stupid, backwards planet! (I mean, YOU KNOW, the songs you hear in supermarkets, or the radio??) It is outside of most music, as has been made in our times.

Joseph Olson Hehe, I see you failed to recognize my far-away stare into the clouds and sky. I've enjoyed Yes since I was 12.5 years old! I wasn't your typical teenage girl. I was told I often looked distant, but between listening to music, spending my summer days exploring the plants and creatures in my neighborhood, or practising the piano, it's no wonder I found solace in myself. To this day I relish my alone time, but I realized at one point it was time to plant myself in reality, at least most of the time. 😀

Yyz, for me, anything Anderson sings is meaningful. I listened to this (and, other pieces) into the night, yesterday. Today was studio day, and I was stoked - YES, and other bands and artists, open that creative door for me. There is beauty in this world. Even when things seem dark and impossible to survive, the emergence on the other side is, in itself, a very beautiful thing.

That's funny because I've been listening to Yes well into the night lately also. I'll binge listen to certain music for a while, then move on to something else. After a while I'll come back. Now Yes is back in the rotation. I have heard some people that think Anderson is the least essential member of the band. While I don't agree with that sentiment, I do usually focus on the instrumentals of a yes tune. But with this song, for me Anderson takes center stage.

I even got to close enough to lean on the stage directly in front of Howe [close enough to see the dust on his guitars pick-ups]during the Close to the Edge tour. Greg Vance The casette decks I saw overseas when I was in the navy (1968-72) were inferior in playback quality to the 8 track. The casette decks available in the early 70s here were also inferior due to the fact that the playback heads were still being experimented on to get better quality from such a small pickup area. The first really good casette deck I saw was in ... seems that I recall about 1979 or thereabouts and very expensive. I am jealous though... I have never been to a live YES concert. I have dvds of concerts and all their albums on cd. I do miss Jon Anderson as lead singer.

Yeah ... that was the album that hooked me. Was head over heels with Yes with 4 albums ... The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, and Relayer ... still listen to them. But it was at about that time a college buddy took me to a music department party, passed the weed around and somebody put on a Return to Forever album (I think 'Romantic Warrior') ... and then I was down the rabbit hole of jazz. Still falling ... up. ;-)

I went to the Anderson, Rabin, & Wakeman concert last night in Atlanta -- and while it would've been truly surreal to see Howe up there playing this song with them... it was pure bliss to hear "And You and I" live, in concert, after 40 years of being a YES fan. Anderson's voice has healed and sounds as pure as ever -- and Wakeman is still the keyboard master (cape & all). Love to all.

Rearing this disco, I go back in thinking on the 70's when I was a kid, dreaming about what to be as a adult person. We had a group of 6 guys, playing a little of our musical instruments and trying to follow the group Yes tracks, only trying, of course. And today, I'm already almost a old man. Time flyes and we still here, listening to the same good music.

I can clearly remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. This song got past me for a number of years without me hearing it until the late 70's on one particular night. I was lying in bed, in fact the top bunk (I shared my room with my older brother at the time) and I must have been 11 or 12. My brothers and sister were out in the kitchen playing cards or something, and I was in bed in my room next to the kitchen, just laying there, and the radio was playing in the kitchen where they were. This song came on. I'm reliving that night in my brain very vividly as I type this, as if it were only yesterday. I found the opening guitar strains both eerie and beautifully mystical at the same time. I laid there and drifted off to a peaceful slumber while it played, and found out what it was from a friend the next day who happened to own the album. I always loved Yes, and loved them even more after being introduced to this ethereal song on that long ago dreamlike night.

I love Yes. I saw the Classic Albums Tour a couple of years ago and was a bit dubious of Jon Robertson's ability to pull it off. Close to the Edge is my all time favourite album. I know it note for note and as they played it made my heart swell but when they went into "And You & I" I literally wept with joy. It was incredible how Robertson was able to reconstruct the vocals so exquisitely. I was grateful to see the band again as not too long after Chris Squire made his way back to the stars.

Slight clarification to the editorial: Mr. Howe isn't tuning his guitar at the beginning, he is playing harmonic notes which make up the songs intro. He is quietly yet brilliantly setting the tone for the rest of the composition. During the bridge he plays the same notes not as harmonics this time but as full notes adding color and richness which is mirrored and magnified by the other instruments through the ending. Masterful use of dynamics that gives me chills.

My dad was a DJ in the 70's and staged with them them on two tours and was friends with John Anderson in the late 70's. One of his favorite bands. I heard this song all the time in the house as a kid, and I heard my dad watching a Yes concert on Netflix and this song came on. I wasn't around in their time, but I remember this song, and it was just a huge dose of nostalgia. I may be a child of the 90's, but I can still appreciate good music, and good prog rock.

I suppose I could have just dismissed them as "too weird" but even at that young age, it was clear to me that this was music as art. I don't even think I am completely aware of the influence they have had on all aspects of my life but I am eternally grateful that I discovered them when I did.

how can anyone say anything about this song, in a certain sense? It "speaks" in ways that we simply cannot verbalize. This one song alone has in many ways shaped my entire personality. I have been listening to it since 1977, when I was but 12 years old, and I seem to never tire of listening to it again and again and again. It's a gift. A gift I continue to receive all these years later.
