And the Oscar Goes to...Going My Way

Фильм және анимация

My next review in my Best Picture Oscar series. You can find other articles and reviews at my blog: thecinematicpackrat.wordpress....
Note: I know the audio is out of sync during the after credits sequence. I tried to fix it but couldn't in the time I had. Sorry about that.

I was hoping you would show that last scene!

This is one of my favorite all time films. To me the core of the story is the dichotomy between the old & the new & how they can both learn from each other. The failing parish is only the vehicle that pushes the two sides coming together. Everything else is there to show the contrast between the two at the outset. The ending gets me every single time time. I can't watch without a flood of emotion. Great films don't necessarily need great & tightly constructed stories.

I agree! I don't know if Going My Way succeeds in what you say in the last sentence, but it's a great feel good time either way. Thanks for watching! :)

Hey Tim, what do you think of the new rules by the Academy? I wanted to hear your thoughts on the matter.

If you're referring to the Popular Film Award, I think it's pandering and could be an excuse to not give Best Picture to bigger films like Black Panther or A Quiet Place. If you're referring to their decision not air some of the technical awards live, I think it's a disservice to the people in those fields who really only get the spotlight during the ceremony. I find it an insult to the important and imperative work those craftsmen due to steel their moment from them.

How do people use clips from movies or post entire symphonies and not get their stuff taken down? I posted an obit for ANDY WILLIAMS and, of course, used "Moon River," and got a note from KZread that I was violating copyright. Can someone help me? Dennis

Fair Use law allows the use of copyrighted material in certain cases (like reviews) as long as the work is deemed transformative and a reasonable amount of the copyrighted work is used. Sometimes the copyright holder if the correctly or incorrectly think the work is not being used in Fair Use, the holder will ask YT to take the video down, block it, or monetize it. I think some companies have unfairly monetized some of my videos, but I don't mind a lot since I mainly want the videos to be seen.

Starts off a little slow, could of really only been 90 minutes, however, I do like that for a movie about a declining church there isn't too much religious propaganda. Well, other than the line "you throw like an atheist".

I've seen this movie so many times and still love it. AND I could have written a better review when I saw it at age 11.

What the alleged critic cannot do---and it hurts him every time he does any review of any film which probably was made long before he was born---is not to put himself in the position of what the audience would have felt when the particular film came out. For instance, in the case of "Going My Way," he fluffs over the need for feel-good escapism during a time when many Americans really feared for their lives every time they heard Hitler on the radio. Was :Going My Way" my choice for Best Picture i n 1944? Hardly. My choice that year would have been another Paramount classic, "Double Indemnity." But anyone who uses early 21st century mentality (Basically, the whiny "Oh, this film is so DATED!") to review a film from another era makes me think we haven't found Roger Ebert's replacement quite yet.

I actually don't like Bing Crosby. I don't know why and I'm pretty sure I'm the only person that doesn't like him, but I just can't stand to watch him and he kind of ruins movies for me.

Oh, I'm sure you're not the only one who dislikes him. I'm not a fan of his slightly more cynical characters, such as the guy he plays in White Christmas (who's a good man but is a bit too negative for my taste). One of the reasons I love him in this movie is because he is so positive. But it's perfectly understandable if you're a big fan of his. Thank you for watching, by the way!

He is still one of the best singers of all time ! And White Christmas by Cosby is the most popular Christmas song of all time, and he was great in Going My Way, and the Country Girl ! Christmas would not be Christmas without Crosby !!
