"And So the Wind Blew..." by Gene Koshinski
Performed by Gene Koshinski and Benjamin Toth
Recorded LIVE (unedited) in Weber Music Hall on the campus of University of Minnesota Duluth on April 8, 2014
Sound recording by Don Schraufnagel
Program Notes:
And So the Wind Blew... began with the idea of composing for my personal collection of wind chimes (outdoor chimes, not mark trees). After I decided to compose this piece I started thinking about the sound of wind chimes and how the wind is typically the performer of these instruments. I put even more thought into this concept and realized that the wind could perform a "piece" on wind chimes with an infinite amount of variations, day in and day out. Perhaps when the wind is blowing and activating wind chimes hanging on a porch or on a tree in the backyard we do not pay enough attention to the wind's performance. (Just a thought...)
In order to compose the piece I imagined a situation where the wind could have an opportunity to perform on stage with musicians and traditional percussion instruments; each influencing and complementing each other. To facilitate this somewhat unrealistic scenario the vibraphone player must play the wind's part whenever playing the wind chimes. In order to play the role of the wind, the vibraphone player must think carefully about how wind chimes sound in nature and integrate that sound into this piece. There are moments in the piece where different instruments are highlighted; however the wind chimes were always at the focal point from the compositional point of view. This is important to keep in mind.
The piece ends with the melody of the wind chimes floating over the sound of an ocean drum, a representation of the wind blowing out to sea...
-Gene Koshinski

Beautiful piece! I kept looking at the large frame drum on the table wondering when it was going to get played? Then while watching I heard an ocean drum, BINGO! love the way it ends the piece. Vibraphone, crotales, wind chimes and bowls! Very nice. Reminds of a cross between Steve Reich and Toro Takemitsu.

I ADORE this piece! Would love to take a glimpse of the score as well, though it surely must be chaos. I like the randomness element from the windchimes, you never know how the will move and what sound exactly they will produce. I would also like to see this being performed outside having the extra element of the wind playing the chimes. It would be fantastic!

I was just thinking that every time this song is played it will be, while similar, different based on the fact wind chimes are random. Which means that the person making the song is personally preforming the piece specifically for the room and that makes the song special for anyone seeing this live! Also I just read the description of the video and it specifically stated what I just wrote sooooooo I don't know what to say, um, read your description kids to not look like an idiot?

there are some who would argue that since a composer can never specify every detail about how a piece should be played, there is necessarily some interpretation on the part of the performer beyond what the composer says, and so the player's particular performance is an integral part of the process of creating the experience and by extension the piece itself. in essence, then, every piece is rewritten in some small respect every time it is performed
