My favorite hymn! It encapsulates all the wonder of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was the unofficial hymn of my college. When the student body was able to call out choices for hymns, this was always requested and the congregational singing was an overwhelming experience.

I 'found' this beautiful hymn just this morning. I've played it over many times during the past few hours. In all my 81 years on this earth, in England and in the U.S.A. I have never before heard it...or its melody. But I can surely identify myself within its words. Thanks for posting; God bless you.

I’ve sung it many times in church when I was in the choir, but on discovering it here I realised it had been years and years since I’d last sung it. Those were the days! Now the church choir doesn’t exist, the services use “modern” music and I no longer attend anyway. Nothing against modern music, there are some very nice songs, but it’s a shame all the glorious hymns like this which were food for the soul have been tossed aside because they’re in a hymn book that’s considered old fashioned. These are the inspirational and timeless songs which I took for granted and thought I’d be singing for ever. Hearing the hymn again was a nostalgic moment, it brought back memories of an era that is well and truly in the past.

Because in these old hymns there is biblical teaching and doctrine in it. They aren't like the new aged songs where you can substitute a loved ones name in it and it fits. These songs were made with purpose to give doctrinal reminders to us

This man preaches through his own hymns things which are nowhere in the Bible and what is more he cannot sing in a tuneful and reverent way about God and his dealing with human beings. He is a sloppy theological love bomber and believes in a tortured Saviour perpetually on the Cross rather than living and interceding for us at the right of God. I do not like the way such singers as him infuse older hymns with this constant talk of blood and love and would now rather not hear any modern Christian try to sing them.

The last stanza always raises my spirit when I feel down. I just wish they had sung it the usual way, with the men alone singing the last 2 verses of each stanza, and then the women repeating them. The contrast in the voices is so beautiful.

Yes but what has love to do with it? I still.find the theology utterly vile and self defeating..God and Christ cannot be like what.is says. If murder is a criminal.act why should God use it against His son.to erase sin. Sin is still.with us and Jesus life resurrection ascension.and second coming are ignored at the expense of His being constantly invoked on the Cross with talk of His blood. Where has taking up ones own cross gone in all this. I dont believe any more in Penal Substitution and never repeat lines from a new hymn I ll.never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross. I might be alone but i believe the idea that this was the only way for Almighty God to be able to.deal with mans sin is a half truth.. i dont feel that the church or hymns like this tell the full story. It was execution and murder but it was not in such way connected with slaughtering animals and putting your offspring on an altar and offering him to.God. if so what was wrong with what the devotees of Moloch did and the evil.kings of Israel who went down in history for the same. Are you saying that God wants to act similarly.? We.dont know this and have thrown our ways onto Him. Crosstianity and Churchianity are not the real thing and neither is saying that sin disappears by a murdered victims blood. Its a twisted cross.

Townend does change things in his own hymns and thats why he cannot sound in the least sincere when he sings here of Amazing Love. He and Getty set up God full of wrath placated by His own Sons blood and calls that deep love..its distressingly different from Wesley and we should not pretend that it is not. I never want to sing How Deep the Fathers Love because I believe it honours another gospel and I happily hear someone other than Stuart Townend try to sing And Can It Be.

In this song, Charles Wesley takes us from the throne room of God (the ark of the covenant in the holy of holies), to the reason Christ came into this world, to Mr. Wesley's personal experience of the divine when his "chains" fell off and he received salvation, to the articulation of his mission to go forth and live as Christ called him to live, to his passion to do so, and his life beyond this world in eternity, face to face with the God who called him to it all. What an amazing hymn that genuinely reflects an amazing spiritual journey! There is simply no other that compares. Praise God for the countless number of people this hymn has drawn into God's loving arms since it was written!

Such a magnificent verse which perfectly encapsulates the conversion moment. "Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee."

@@rhodiusscrolls3080 I am a tradionalist with regards to hymns and this hymn by Charles Wesley 1738 to celebrate his conversion to his faith is an all time classic. I first learned to play this on piano so that's probably why it holds it's place in my affection.

I find Stuart Townend a very poor performer of traditional.hymns and maybe it iis his vulgarisation that ruins this all for me. I would much sooner hear reverently sung traditional hymns than any tawdry offetings made by so called Contemporary Christian Music. I watched that Our God Is An Awesome God by the one who composed iit the.other night and thought it looked abd sounded like Nazis at one of their rallies it was so badly sent out.

@@rhodiusscrolls3080 good morning . Yes I understand your point. I would rather the choristers of Kings @Cambridge sang this , I just found it a different twist on this hymn. I was just listening to some the other version of crimonds the Lords my shepherd which is a totally different jaunty version of the hymn I remember been taught. I am told the other tempo of this is used in some Catholic services.
