I've just watched this film, as I'm just catching up with your back catalogue. Its so nice to see someone using gorse in a wildlife garden, especially if you want to attract birds. Hi Paul - so glad you enjoyed this and yes gorse is great for attracting a lot of wildlife - the clients are both heavily involved in birding and surveys etc and I know that Linnets have been recorded in the garden, as well as White-Throat which have successfully bred in the Gorse :) Best wishes to you and yours in Wales - Joel

This is phenomenal Joel from the start to the finish of the project and of course it is ongoing from a development and maintenance perspective. The landowners are wonderful people to enlist you to create this oasis for people and wildlife with the opportunity for habitats to develop and wildlife to flourish. Inspirational. I saw my first marbled white during the summer of 2021 in the meadow the other side of my garden hedge and included it in one of my videos. That sighting was a highlight amongst many. I hope to see more this summer, fingers crossed. Thank you as always for all that you do to make this world a better place. Paul 😊

Thank you Paul :) Quite surprisingly, I found a good number of Marbled White down by the seawall near where I live - I didn't expect to see them at all, let alone in such numbers! Yes, this was a fantastic project to be involved in and the clients really are into their birds and making the whole area appealing for wildlife, they're rewarded daily needless to say! I will check out your video asap, at the moment I've spent the last 3 hours editing the 100th pond video, not sure how long it will take to upload to YT as it's circa half hour but needed to be :) Catch up with you soon! I dream often of having an area that size to improve and "give back" to nature - meanwhile, encouraging as many people as possible to make a space available for wildlife will certainly create a mosaic and corridors that can help these plants, insects, birds, animals thrive and in turn be enjoyed by more people - it's a win/win all round - thanks again for all your support, it really is appreciated and helps make this all worthwhile :)

What you're doing really WILL make a difference to all that fauna struggling to find habitat, there are so many "isolated" butterfly species that have to stay where they are, purely because there's no "bridge" to other places, the Heath Fritillary butterfly is a prime example. Keep doing what you're doing and it will pay off, guaranteed - lots more videos to upload, it's just finding the time, but your encouragement continues to inspire me, thank you :)

That was the first thing I noticed when responding to a video, you are very active in keeping in contact with your viewers🥰 I will do my best, maybe I may inspire a few people in my area over time to do the same. Even if it's a small corner. I noticed last year with my paved-over backyard since adding a nice, spacious, planted corner, how much life there was in. I saw several caterpillars and had about 3 visiting butterfly species and a big bee coming back every single day (until it drowned 😭) I even had a wild pink flower species growing between the leftover of the digging, which only grows on rough, rural sites like a descerted business area. I was so amazed of it's kelk like beauty, that I can't imagine why people dishonour nature so much🙁

Hey Joel, love the video! I am aware that existing vegetation should be removed before putting down wildflower seeds but I noticed in the grasshopper meadow that it seemed as though the wildflowers and grasses were coexisting. Can wildflowers coexist with native grasses and sedges? Thanks and all the best!

The Canadian Rockies are just idyllic not only for their gorgeous mountain scenery and wilderness but also for the conservation efforts of their pristine flora and fauna by Parks Canada and other dedicated groups.

What a transformation, it is nice to see that there are still people willing to put the effort, (or contract someone to put in the effort), to create such wonderful environments, is the hay from the annual mowing cleared off the field ? @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I find that last cut very difficult to time here in France, most Septembers are full of flying butterflies looking for nectar, and the meadow ,being filled with Scabious at that time is a huge draw for them, I now cut part of it in October, then, if the bad weather has not set in, another full cut in November, but this year there was still a lot flying to the end of November, then there is the problem of Lizard Orchids, they are starting to shoot up at the end of November, so it is always a timing problem for me. @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I have often thought of such management as "playing god", it is of course a huge advantage to be able to manage an environment by just stepping out of your back door, it gives a great advantage in as much as being able to judge to the day when the work is best carried out, I find it best to cut different areas at different times so as to maximise nectar sources , but of course by the time butterflies stop flying,(around the end of November here), Orchids have started pushing up, and a few of them get their leaves clipped short, it does not seem to bother them though, but in some areas of our meadow the Scabious are still in flower now, (December).

Can I ask if you used any membrane under the crushed stone paths please. I get ear ache for not using it because I want to keep things simple, but wondered if I should be using it?

Hi there - you'll be pleased to know that there's no need for membrane, as long as the sub-base is laid to at least 6 inches, I lay it on Type One MOT or Crushed Concrete :) Hope this helps and backs up your theory ;) Best wishes - Joel

It’s a bit off topic but I have a question about a plant called Nandina domestica or heavenly bamboo. Does this plant have any benefit to wildlife as far as the flowers and berries go?

Hi Addison - this question is just as valid :) From my understanding, birds such as Cardinals and Waxwings do eat the berries but, like most things, if eaten in excess can cause harm to them - I'm not aware of any butterflies using the flowers/nectar but I'm hoping one of the viewers here may be able to shed further light for you - if you do find out by other means do let me know! If I come across some I certainly will :) I understand it's pretty invasive and not native to the UK but if I see it already established as a specimen in a garden I'll let you know for sure - lucky you, none of the UK can be considered a warm zone ;)
