Ancient Human Fossils Launched Into Space?!

Fossilized ancient pre-human remains were launched into space on the 3rd commercial flight by Virgin Galactic on September 8th 2023.
Let’s take a look at the reason as to why these fossils were on board of the commercial flight in space, who chose these fossils, who took them along with them and why this was done.
Launching ancient pre human remains into space isn’t something that many scientists and palaeontologists around the world perceive as a good idea.

The fossils seem like a trophy to me. I believe there are cultures that believe in trapping spirits to serve a survivor. That's what this feels like......capturing the spirit of the fossil to boost their pride. I also feel like I'm being harsh for lack of the kind of evidence that would lead me logically to this conclusion. I'm just expressing what I feel based on my instincts.

My dear young Kayleigh, our personal opinion is just as valid as mine out anybody else's & I, for one, would love to hear it. I'm a big fan of yours & you may be an enthusiastic amateur, but you're one of the best informed amateurs around!!! My opinion, for what it's worth, is that this was an exercise in vanity; I see no practical benefit, to research with the potential for great loss had anything gone wrong. The loss would've been "astronomical" as the fossils are, as you said, irreplaceable. There was no practical purpose served other than to make someone feel more important than they really are, self validation. Ere there thousands upon thousands of these fossils, that would be different, but there aren't. I lived at Edisto Island here in South Carolina, the most fossiliferous beach on the east coast; in one afternoon, at dead low ebb tide, in two hours, I picked up 321 whole sharks teeth with countless fragments, along with a tapir tooth, several horses teeth, several camel teeth, several dozen stingray barbs, alligator scutes, a dolphins tooth & a bunch of drum fish teeth. Point being, there's gazillions of them, fossils like those get ground up daily in the making of concrete posing no loss to science; but the human fossils of the type you spoke of being lost to science would have been tragic. What were they thinking? I don't often comment, because I can't just enter a sentence or two, I've got to write a book!!! So, thank you for reading this bloviated message!!! Keep on doing the great work that you do!!! You rock young lady, & that's coming from an old fart who was a teen during the 1960's when they really rocked!!! I'm practically a fossil myself!!!

I only ask because US sources for this history is lacking and they don't really go into as much detail, as well as being "anglo-centric" in their bias. It's also harder to find Dutch sources which don't require translation. I think it would be more fascinating to hear not only a Dutch perspective, but also your personal perspective about this more forgotten piece of both Dutch and New World history. While there is likely a very broad spectrum, my own experience with the super wealthy has shown me two basic profiles. One type, they tend to be really nice, kind and considerate to just about everyone. They tend to lead pretty quiet lives, the sort who might hear of some worthy cause and pause a moment to write a check just because they find it fun to do so. Because they can well afford to be that nice, and find it makes for an even more pleasant world for them to be very rich in. While you'll hardly ever hear of 'em, i've seen that such do exist. The other type tends to be completely oblivious to interests or concerns of anyone else they may encounter in the world, acting toward others only in ways which imply their own dominance over anyone else. Because they can afford to ignore everyone else, for the sake of their own self-aggrandizement. They tend to garner significantly greater public visibility, the sort who, hearing of some worthy cause would first think to how they can take it over so any accolades or revenue or simple public attention flows to them, or something like, "Totaled his new Lamborghini two blocks from the dealership."

I have heard of crazy things in my life but this takes the cake. "Human advancements require risks." What what human advancements ??? Sounds like they are risking are risking priceless artifacts for a political stunt. South Africa has enough problems without wasting precious resources on something like this. They would be better off fixing the electrical grid in Cape Town.

We never know how much more information we can get out of a specimen because we can't predict future technologies. At one time we didn't know that rock could provide estimated age of very ancient bone or, more recently, that fossilized pigment could tell us what colors dinosaurs were. To risk damage or destruction of these materials for such a stunt is just hubristic potential squandering of world heritage.

I would not say it was unethical. They forgot their labels. I understand why they did it. I would like to think they would pad the inside of the tube with some type of foam padding. Just because we did not see it does not mean it was not there. Assuming is not a very good thing to do. One must get all their facts. My question is what is Mr. Nash getting out of this?

Congratulations to you, Kayleigh, for tap-dancing through a mine field to emerge on the other side with all your appendages. When I first heard about this I thought “all the damn 10:03 money I’ve donated to the national geographic over the years, and they shoot suff off into space?”. Clearly I need to re-think my meagre funding contributions. This was an ego-centric stunt. Like Elon shooting his car into orbit. Ok. Fine. You can do that. Feel better now? Feel like a “big league guy?”. You know it’s not like we have a huge excess of samples. Genetics or otherwise. I guess some people just never grow up. Whatever……. Fox out

A respectful way of doing it would have been having these remains occupying the seat of a human, not to be carried in the pocket of a human being enjoying this extraordinary experience. You'd think: giving two fossil bones a seat sounds crazy. Which obviously leads to the conclusion that having them in your pocket tells nothing about the bones, but everything about yourself

I disagree wholly with their decision for the bones. It shouldn't have happened. Okay, maybe a different minefield, but if one assumes that the "aliens" in Area 51 are remotely real that stuff is also as disgraceful as well. Humans (8 billion of us) need to start to regard others of OUR kind, past or present or future, as equals and as someone respected. We need to make the assumption that any "other species of intelligent beings" that might exist out there would want to an encounter with a species (us!) who would respect them and not treat them like what had happened in and after 1492. However, disagreeing with the actions aside I do think that any notion of "belief" (past or present versions) should be assigned to these actions. There are potential dangers in outer space like chemicals, pathogens and radiation that we cannot even begin to understand what their impact would be on living being. We live in a biodome that needs to be protected, and nothing from this biodome should be exposed to the chemicals, pathogens and radiation. Because we cannot know if any exposure causes a potential "patient zero"... hence why people going into space are put through decontamination (I would guess). Similarly we could be releasing pathogens into outer space. Those discs in Voyager 1 and 2 sit in an ultra-sterile space vehicle, but this can never be entirely secured in a manned spacecraft...

To me this is ceremonial, not scientific. Spiritual and symbolic. As much as i think that is a very important part of the human experience we must make sure not to destroy our legacy in the process of celebrating it. This is also true when it comes to archeological and historical sites, buildings, objects etc.

While they were Type specimens, they weren't the only Type specimens of their kind, so, for a symbolic pursuit and/or publicity stunt, these don't appear to have been irreplaceable. While clavicles are harder to find than hand bones, neither one is especially rare, considering. Were they handled responsibly? 🤷‍♂️ It was probably no better or worse than transport from the dig site to even a university or lab local to the site. Was it disrespectful? 🤷‍♂️ They were on his person. At least they weren't just stashed in the trunk or the glovebox of Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster. While it certainly raises the concerns mentioned in the video, it seems to have been a lukewarm publicity stunt, with nothing truly ventured, and nothing truly gained. Since there are those pesky restrictions on taking human tissue to space, but there might be some important science to be conducted on cadavers in space, might I propose using the ISS as an orbital hospice when its end of mission date occurs, but before allowing it to enter Earth's atmosphere. Maybe give first dibs to astronauts from any of the partner nations involved, as well as the ground crews and other folks who make space travel possible. Just think how heartwarming it would have been for Stephen Hawking to spend his last days floating around the space station. It'll also be a good incentive for training medical personnel in space. It's the ultimate Doctors Without Borders destination.😅
