It doesn’t! It looks crowded because of my other games! My table is very crowded.

The board is two 17"x22" segments. That is pretty common, but they are arranged end-to-end for a 17"x44" board. That does leave big margins at the side, but can be a problem (though there are many games that want to live on 48"x48" tables). It is mitigated by using less of the board when playing with fewer players, so the unused portion can be used as table space. The successor game, Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East, has a more conventional 22"x34" arrangement.
