The Ancient City of Damascus in Syria is the oldest inhabited capital in the world. The Ancient City of Damascus is on the UNESCO World Heritage List: "Founded in the 3rd millennium B.C., Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. In the Middle Ages, it was the center of a flourishing craft industry, specializing in swords and lace. The city has some 125 monuments from different periods of its history - one of the most spectacular is the 8th-century Great Mosque of the Umayyads, built on the site of an Assyrian sanctuary." Hellenistic Greece, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Arab Conquest...Damascus was ruled by them all and this is reflected in her architecture. There are examples from each of the aforementioned periods (as well as others), yet they all somehow blend together so seamlessly. Damascus truly is the crown jewel of the Middle East.

I had no idea how beautiful Damascus is. So much to learn and explore of its ancient history. Glad to see that remnants of its past still exist for the world to see.

Thank you, as ever, for these absolutely beautiful videos. For both practical and financial reasons, I can't travel anywhere near as much as I should like to, so it's a real joy to see these places presented so well. Not quite like being there in person, but a very good way of scratching the travel itch!

Great video that takes us back in time. The music is very appropriate. I noticed that there is bird nuisance that does no good to the monuments and mosque. And that de buildings do not look very safe. But the ancient atmosphere is there. 👍
