Anchoring a boat - How To Anchor A Wreck | The Fish Locker

Following on from my recent fishing at anchor session, I have broken the video down to bring you a "how to" video. Showing my tips for shooting the anchor, marking the wreck and hauling the anchor with an Alderney ring. This is my method and it is the method I find most successful when fishing at anchor, you may have another way, I would love to hear your methods. It's always good to share knowledge.

    lefty940 - This vid is about as detailed as I can make it for hitting your mark as everything else is just experience and practice - and even then sometimes it goes slightly wrong. It’s not an exact science and every boat and day at sea is different. 🛥⚓️

    @@TheFishLocker yes some great info. This will sound crazy but with my old boat i was almost always very close to marks but with the one i have now its totally different. I think the Gps is much more accurate and faster than the old one

    lefty940 - Who knows. I suspect with ones like the one I have when you have a yearly subscription fee. As soon as you don’t renew it makes your charts inaccurate. So you have to renew your subscription. Who knows? 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I use this system. None better. My only observation is that if you use a heavy chain you can get away with much less length of rope. Not by the book but when trying to keep station over the wreck the less swing as the tide changes tne better. Make sure there's a drop strop off the ring so ypu don't puncture the buoy the anchor fires its way through! Smaller dia rope would do on your boat. Great info fish locker. Hope you don't mind my feedback.👍

    Paul Dodgson - All great points mate. You are absolutely right about the chain and diameter of rope. But I was done a deal for it so you make do don’t you 😉👍🏻 I’ve never had an anchor like that burst a buoy but I can imagine a grapnel anchor could. Good thinking 👍🏻

For me everything outdoors is my passion, I was a very outdoors child and just love anything fishing. I don’t know if I will ever be in a position to do it for a living but I don’t think I will ever stop doing it. Tight lines mate. 👍🏻😉🎣

    Hi John - many thanks for the videos and tutorials - informative and entertaining. On anchoring I see that you always drop and haul from the side, given that a 520 / Warrior and in my instance an Endeavour 500 all have cuddys with forward hatch access and rope locker how do you then tie off on the bow given that you are working from the deck? Do you run the anchor rope through a painter loop attached to the bow? Regards Steve

  • @TheFishLocker

    @TheFishLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    You can run a painter line. All I do is tie off to the cleat midships by the controls and run the line along the side of the hull/cuddy, take a turn around the forward cleat and over the bow roller. So when I come to haul all I do is go up front and slip the rope off before steaming away for hauling with the Alderney ring.

    Hello John. A question if you don't mind. I have two shackles on my anchor chain. Will the chain pass through the ring or will it get caught on the screw part of the shackle? Many thanks.

  • @TheFishLocker

    @TheFishLocker

    It depends on the size of the shackle and the size of the ring. It may foul, it may pass through. Every time could be different. 👍🏻

    interesting video ,thanks what about those electric anchors approx 40 lbs or similar but they only have 40m of rope, I use one in the lakes 40 lbs never tried it at seas its says its marine suitable still even in east of Ireland is usually no more then 25 m of water where I fish ,would you think is unsafe to have that little spare of rope 15 m spare in 25 m of water

  • @TheFishLocker

    - I don't know which ones you mean? And I don't know of many small boats that use 40lb anchors? That is what I would expect from a 30ft vessel. You want 2-3 times the depth of water and spare incase you come into trouble.

    Hope you dont mind me asking. Have just bought my first boat, a Warrior 165. My neighbour is an experienced boat owner and will basically captain the boat for the first 12 months whilst I get my qualifications. The boat needs certain items being replaced such as the anchor rope. As I will be fishing out of Plymouth in up to 200ft of water, would you be so kind as to advise what rope I should purchase, namely type of rope/diameter and length. I believe the rope should not be a floating rope such as blue poly rope. Regards, Ron

    I personally use a dyneema style rope. It’s expensive but very very good quality. I have 2x350ft coils. When I’m anchoring in deep water I connect the 2.

    There is a lot more to anchoring than I thought!! How come you can’t just drop the anchor at the wreck and have the anchor line going straight up to the boat I’m confused and slightly scared as I’m trying anchoring for the first time.
