The Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed is named for their homeland of Anatolia in the central part of Turkey, where they are still a point of pride (and have even been honored on a national postage stamp).
It's thought that the working ancestors of the breed date back 6,000 years. Wandering tribes from central Asia probably brought the first mastiff-type dogs into the area that is now Turkey, and sight hound breeds from southern regions contributed to the Anatolian's agility, long legs, and aloof character.

Even though they're not common, I've known a couple of Anatolians. The one thing I noticed is that when they're being protective of kids, they do it with calm assertiveness. Could have been the training, but they were definitely not overly excitable, but if you tried to bother one of those kids, God help you.

My Anatolian Pyrenees girl is so smart and sweet. I live out in the middle of nowhere so my dogs don't get a lot of socializing which is fine with me. My dogs are guard dogs to protect me and the chickens, not socializing with strangers. They alert me to anyone on the property. They are also properly contained so they can't run and harass anyone

@dawn7 Aren’t they a marvelous dog?! I showed my girl the corners of the property when she was a pup…and she stays within perimeters, even tho the farm is unfenced. No neighbors within 20 kms. Boo has a 100% success rate at protecting my chickens. Super sharp senses, nothing gets past her observation unnoticed, coyotes and wolves don’t stick around when they see her charging at full speed…and I haven’t even seen a bear since I got her as a pup 2 years ago. If you have the space, these beasts are a great choice.

my 2 year old Kangal is a beast! dispatches coyotes and wolves…or anything that she deems a threat to her flock….very quickly. The acceleration and speed is astounding. I have a quarter section of property, which she patrols twice daily, with or without me. Haven’t lost a chicken yet to predators, she even chases away hawks, lol. Highly recommend to people with lots of space…my best dog to date👍

I cannot imagine having this dog outside of "working dog" contexts. They're very intelligent and can be very affectionate, but they're very focused on negotiating power in their pack and having them indoors would just be...a lot. They're huge and have so much fur.

My girls are indoor outdoor dogs and it works great for us and I live off-grid in an airstream out in the middle of nowhere so they keep all of us protected. All of my giant breeds were raised this way, but I can understand how you would feel this way. They are also doing their job of guardians, and they are very good at it. And yep, lots of hair and grooming time. I'm retired so I have the time to spend with them to train them how to behave indoors

I have an Anatolian shepherd puppy mixed with maybe a Saint Bernard. I got him from SPCA and mom was a stray so we don’t know but my pup has the colouring of a Saint Bernard just short haired like an Anatolian shepherd.

I also have a Anatolian/Great Pyrenees mix 1 year about 110lbs 70%Anatolian30% Pyrenees the hardest dog i had to teach recall but it’s possible but you have to drill it in them and I know it sounds kind of messed up but lighten up on how much you feed them so they are always a little hungry than keep there favorite food or treat chopped up in bits of pieces with you than start the recall training it works wonders for after 2 weeks his recall was so good he listen in dog park and distracted environment.

@@bigyu1129 it's not messed up to say. A hungry anything works better, and by feeding them less in their bowl don't mean they are getting less food , you make up for it when feeding them food to train them. I'd just say balancing it, food as reward then praise switching back and forth.

No such thing as an Anatolian Shepherd. In Turkey this refers to mixed breed. In AKC they, in error and rather dishonestly registered Kangal crossed with Akbash. It would be nice if all these floof channels did a little more research and used country of origina breed standards
