I have a 9 week old Pyrenees/Anatolian who id like to make into a successful LGD. Would love to have more videos on how to train!

It is more instinctual for them. Training them not to jump, sit and stay is more of the type of training you need to do. I have six Great Pyrenees and I have done no live stock training. The only training I have done is making sure to introduced my dogs to people and make sure they are clear on me and others putting a hand in and near their food dishes as they eat. They can be very food aggressive if not trained.

If they are properly bred then you wont need to do much training. I have a pyr Anitolian mix and I didnt have to train him at all to guard. He has always done a fabulous job. The only training we did was basic obedience... I will say getting a good recall on him was the hard part

I have a 11 week old GP puppy. Thank goodness I fostered 17 GP before getting one so I knew what to expect! They are a handful and wicked smart. ❤️

I've unfortunately lived in a town or city my entire 43 years. Oh what I wouldn't give to live in the countryside with a small farm. It's just a dream at this moment in time but who knows what might happen in the future. Depending on where I'm living I might not need an lgd but I'd still get 2 just because they're such amazing dogs. I'd like a Kangal to patrol the perimeter and a Great Pyrenees to stay with the animals.

Man, this was bar none the most helpful training video I have seen on YT. I have a 2 month old GP pup and he acts just like yours, smart and very well behaved overall but chewing on anything he can get his mouth on. Great content sir!

You hit the nail on the head, my two will be 8 weeks on Sunday and they already have me worn out. Trying to keep them contained and to come are my two issues. I still have to be concerned with hawks and owls until they grow a bit more. They sure are independent and love to wander.

The wandering is the one issue about these dogs that’s tough to manage. I’m trying to put up a fence to at least keep him wandering within my property.

How large a dog can a bird take? I’d expect eight week old guardian puppy to be too large fo4 a hawk or owl.

@@tag1out - @skashoon said they still have to be concerned with hawks and owls. Coyotes remain a concern for any dogs not large, healthy, experienced, or determined enough. Toward the end even my old pyr would have been vulnerable due to her arthritis and attitude. She would fight with other dogs, but was always looking for submission and in reality was a big snuggly lap dog. Figured it was my job to carry tools to be able to protect her when yotes stalked us on our evening walks.

We have a almost one year old he is crazy about making sher the animals are in there own pens .he is learning us .he love the sheep and the goats .and they actually like him .my daughter has a little dog and the sheep hate the little dog .the goats put there heads out of the fence and like when he licks there heads .and the big sheep come running to the fence and he stands up and looks at the lambs .crazy dog .we have 50 sled dogs but it are first guard dog because now we have sheep. We are getting another puppy today for him to train.i had to start trapping coyotes and I got 7 coyotes and 1 fox this week.

I love that you are taking his training very seriously. So many people just buy them then think super basic training is all they need. Working dogs need to learn boundaries and particulars of how things should be run! And doing it incrementally is a good idea.

It is best to get LGD puppies that are not only from working parents, but born and raised out in the pasture or pen with at least one class of livestock, then they will be bonded and their training well started by 8wks. They will even have started working by 8wks, though way too small to take on a predator alone, but easier to finish up. LGDS work more successfully in pairs (in some situations packs may be needed), then they can also produce and train up young LGDS. I have ran LGDS since 1998, had some that didn't work out, then had some that were and are terrific. When they are really working well they do some amazing things and are a management system of their own in addition to predator control. Old ewes get in on raising these pups as well, bedding down close to newborn puppies, putting their faces down for a little older puppies to lick, and butting those that get to close to newborn lambs.

Have always trained with leashes dog until can be trusted. Maybe he’s further in training! If this was first exposure I’d definitely have him leashed(for anyone starting training day one). ☺️

Do you have update video on how the rest of his training went? Also, is he free roaming on the farm or in a fence or does he come in at night in the house or barn???

Your sheep overall dealt better with the pup than mine did with a pup who tried to play with them. My sheep ran like crazy and got tangled into the fence once. The next time they went flying over my fences. Didn't work at all so far.

Thank you for the GP training video. Important question for me is do you allow the dog in the house? The training video is very helpful. I’m going to look for my red of your videos. I just need to know some of the other things in house no house. Socialization like taking to the store with me or not. PLease help there are mixed signals going around. Without seeing Coyotes and wolves, how will this LGD distinguished between a 'friendly' animal and another predator? Does it need to be taught that or is it by their instincts, or when they see that a predator has killed or taken another livestock that they only spring into action?

Great question... Not an expert but I believe it's instinctual. They bond with their farms livestock mammals (chickens I've read they learn to ignore more than Bond with). A predator will be a rather obvious interloper and threat. But that's just what I've read, our LGD is still a pup

I have a 4 month old mixed with cattle dog. How do I train him to consistently come to me.

I introduced our puppy to the chickens, they ran, so she chased them. What would you recommend. I took her in the sheep pen and the momma head butted her. She’s okay. But, I know she learned her lesson this morning not to mess with the lambs.

I’d start with a leash or long line so you can correct him when attempting unwanted behavior

Thank you so much for this video. We are currently building up our homestead/farm and we want permcutlure, but still learning. But we are currently having us sues with hawks getting out chickens. It has been so heartbreaking and frustrating. We have decided to get a dog foe the homestead watch. We currently have two mutt boxers but they are not doing a good job guarding, since they are trained and used to our previous lifestyle of no homestead... where would you recommend the dog to sleep? In the house? Barn etc? Thank you

@@enilas7 these dogs nearly overheat inside. I would put the puppy in with the livestock or in the garage until he’s about 30 pounds.

We have put a deposit on our great pyranese. Looking forward to training according to your tips and my family and I are excited to start this permaculture journey... what food would you suggest for the pup? We are really having trouble deciding. We currently feed our other dogs raw but they are not livestock guardian dogs...help?!

Do you have a source for that sheep tractor?

I'm going to be adopting a rescue puppy soon. He's a mix of a lot if things, but I'm guessing he has a lot of lab and pit. I want to train him to be nice to the chickens and not chase them. I live in a neighborhood, so predators ate not a huge problem. We do have coyotes and foxes, but the chickens have a very secure yardworh a roof and a coop they get put in at night to sleep. Does this method work for all puppies?

Not all dog breeds/mixes will be able to become LGDs. There are certain breeds that have this working ability and instinct bred into them. They live with and are strongly bonded to their livestock instead of the normal human/companion dog relationship. A lab/pit could most likely be trained to be safe and respectful of livestock, though, but they were bred for other uses and their brains are not wired to have the same instinct as the LGD breeds (& vice versa).

There the best dogs for home or farm.

In the same boat not having a older dog to train my 8wo LGD puppy. Im struggling with the introduction to the sheep. Although they had an older LGD dog prior, they constantly want to head butt. At this point I'm staying close and doing limited exposure as you are. How do you handle these intros with sheep without pup getting hurt?

I’m not sure of this. I’m getting rid of one of my goats (I only have 2) because I don’t trust this goat with my 9 week old Pyrenees and she’s a mean goat. Her mother actually attacked my 16 year old yorkie for no reason and she broke both sides of her jaw and had to be put down. Let’s just say that goat didn’t last long either. But anyways if you figure out a solution please let me know. My new puppy’s name is sugar because she’s super sweet and white like sugar lol.

Neither one of those breeds are LGD. Don't expect your mixed dog to be a natural working farm dog, it's not instinctual for them, it will require a lot of training and most likely they will never be as good as a Great Pyrenees or an Anatolian

males are better with larger animals away from the barn, females tend to stay closer to the barn and smaller stock

I've been told the best bet is a male/female pair. They get less bored, have better behavior, and have backup against threats. Also, two boys get to aggressive and two girls can have jealousy issue, so a alpha male plus a female is a good matchup.

@@alphacat9302 Oh, this is interesting! I guess after all the birds we have now with their being happier having companionship, it doesn't surprise me that it applies to dogs, lol. (My first two geese just hatched their first gosling three weeks ago yesterday! I'm hoping it'll be the opposite sex of my third goose and partner up, haha.)

@@beverly5249 absolutely. Our hens are far happier now that we have roosters too - the roosters actually break up hen fights. Livestock (sheeps, alpaca, etc) generally prefer groups of at least 3. And now we have livestock guardians to protect our animals, tho I'm still training for chickens to ensure there are no incidents (for the mammals it was practically instant, it was very obvious they instinctually protect livestock)
